    SOFTVIZ... A Step Forward

    Complex software systems are difficult to understand and very hard to debug. Programmers trying to understand or debug these systems must read through source code which may span over thousands of files. Software Visualization tries to ease this burden by using graphics and animation to convey important information about the program to the user, which may be used either for understanding the behavior of the program or for detecting any defects within the code. SoftViz is one such software visualization system, developed by Ben Kurtz under the guidance of Prof. George T. Heineman at WPI. We carry forward the work initiated with SoftViz. Our preliminary study showed various avenues for making the system more effective and user-friendly. Specifically I completed the unfinished work, made optimizations, implemented new functionality and added new visualization plug-ins, all aimed at making the system a more versatile and user-friendly debugging framework. We built a solid core functionality that would be able to support various functionalities and created new plug-ins that would make understanding and bug-detection easier. Further we integrated SoftViz with the Eclipse development environment, making the system easily accessible and potentially widely used. We created an error classification framework relating the common error classes and the visualizations that could be used to detect them. We believe this will be helpful in both selecting the right visualization options as well as constructing new plug-ins

    The information and communication technologies (ICT) sectors are in a process of technological convergence. Determinant factors in this process are the liberalisation of the telecommunications markets and technological change. Many firms are engaged in a process of mergers and alliances to position themselves in this new framework. Technological and demand uncertainties are very important. Our objective in this paper is to study the economic determinants of the strategies of the firms. With this aim, we review some key technological and demand aspects.     Providing VCR Functionality in VOD Servers

    Resource-sharing techniques are widely used by VOD servers. Stream merging is one of the most efficient resource-sharing techniques. ERMT is able to achieve merge trees with the closest cost of optimal merge tree. Full VCR support has become a “must have” feature for VOD services. This researcher proposed an algorithm to enable VCR support on ERMT. Furthermore, client local buffer and fixed-interval periodical multicasting were also deployed by the algorithm to improve the stream-client ratio. After thorough runs of simulations and numerous comparisons to BEP, the highly efficient resource- sharing technique, the proposed algorithm with client local buffer utilization and fixed- interval multicasting showed better performance in all simulations. The biggest discovery is that the best-performer is modified ERMT with client local buffer support for VCR without fixed-interval multicasting. Another discovery is that bigger client buffer size hurts the performance of ERMT

    An Ecological Framework to Assess Sustainability Impacts for an Evolving Consumer Electronic Product System

    Consumer electronics have revolutionized the manner in which we work, read, and entertain ourselves. However, this transformation comes at a high cost, with significant energy input and emissions releases across all stages of the electronic product life cycle. The limited success of per product efficiency improvements, often formulated in the field of industrial ecology, does not address the electronic product system as a whole because escalating consumption may actually offset any individual impact reductions. Additionally, existing industrial ecology models fail to effectively capture energy, material, and waste flows associated with real consumption patterns, as consumers purchase, use, and discard a group of interrelated devices such as desktops, laptops, printers, mobile phones, and digital cameras. To address this challenge, this dissertation develops and applies novel industrial ecology methodologies to more effectively characterize changes to rapidly evolving and interrelated product systems. Notably, these approaches borrow heavily from underutilized biological ecology concepts from community ecology and optimal foraging theory, but adapted for use as applied to a complex product system like consumer electronics. These approaches can lead to more effective design, production, green purchasing decisions, and end of life practices and policies, while at the same time expand industrial ecology\u27s traditional focus on the ecosystem metaphor and ‘per product’ approaches and strengthen its connection to the source science: biological ecological roots
