To be successful in open innovation, firms need to craft an effective strategy for both

Externalities Imposed on Residential Properties in Highly Urbanized Areas
In highly industrialized areas open spaces such as farmland and nature are under pressure since urban areas are expanding at their expense. Because of the high opportunity costs of development in urban areas, a high price has to be paid for the maintenance or creation of open space. The question is if this high price can be justified by the value of the open space. We estimate the value residents attach to surrounding open space in a hedonic pricing model. More specifically, we investigate in a highly urbanized area in the Netherlands how the externalities of farmland, nature, and other uses, such as industrial areas and the sea affect residential property prices. Moreover, spatial lag and error dependence are corrected for in the hedonic pricing model used to estimate the value of open space and other externalities. According to our results premiums are paid by residents who buy properties close to urban parks and the North Sea and for properties with views on open space
Creation of the universe with a stealth scalar field
The stealth scalar field is a non-trivial configuration without any
back-reaction to geometry, which is characteristic for non-minimally coupled
scalar fields. Studying the creation probability of the de Sitter universe with
a stealth scalar field by the Hartle and Hawking's semi-classical method, we
show that the effect of the stealth field can be significant. For the class of
scalar fields we consider, creation with a stealth field is possible for a
discrete value of the coupling constant and its creation probability is always
less than that with a trivial scalar field. However, those creation rates can

Technology entrepreneurship and value creation on open innovation platforms
This dissertation studies how entrepreneurial firms create economic value from open source technology platforms, interfaces on which firms disclose knowledge and distribute innovation for free without retaining any proprietary rights. Despite their increasing importance in innovation and growing popularity among profit-seeking new ventures, open source platforms present a major challenge for value creation, as they lack price signals to guide ventures’ transactions and forfeit ventures’ control over key resources and knowledge for innovation. Those features are in contrast with the fundamental assumption about price and revenue in economics. They also run counter to the central tenet in strategy research that private knowledge and rare resources are central to competitive advantage and profiting from innovation.
To address this puzzle about value creation from free technologies base on free knowledge and resources, this dissertation specifically focus on the economic implications of strategies ventures can leverage within and across open source development communities. Chapter I reviews the literature relevant to entrepreneurship in an open and inter-dependent innovation environment. Exploring research opportunities emerged from the literature review, Chapter II explores the possibility that multihoming, a critical growth strategy of ventures as open source complementors in platform competition, allows ventures to reinforce their existing user base – a prerequisite of value creation from open source. Chapter III directly addresses value creation by investigating how collaborating with external contributors, another critical open source strategy, influences venture capital investment. Both essays highlight how platform network effects unfold without price signals and proprietary rights of the technologies in shaping the outcome for ventures’ strategies. They also emphasize those strategies’ demand side implications on users, participants on another side of open source platforms.
The empirical analyses of this dissertation are based on multiple open source technologies platforms, with data obtained from on GitHub, the worlds’ largest open source software storage provider, containing 5 Terabytes of information on 2.1 million ventures, 96 million technologies and over 2 billion development activities, under research designs for deriving causal references. Overall, the dissertation seeks to advance the understanding of value creation in entrepreneurship through open source platforms, an increasingly important phenomenon in contemporary economy.Managemen
Coopetition of software firms in Open source software ecosystems
Software firms participate in an ecosystem as a part of their innovation
strategy to extend value creation beyond the firms boundary. Participation in
an open and independent environment also implies the competition among firms
with similar business models and targeted markets. Hence, firms need to
consider potential opportunities and challenges upfront. This study explores
how software firms interact with others in OSS ecosystems from a coopetition
perspective. We performed a quantitative and qualitative analysis of three OSS
projects. Finding shows that software firms emphasize the co-creation of common
value and partly react to the potential competitiveness on OSS ecosystems. Six
themes about coopetition were identified, including spanning gatekeepers,
securing communication, open-core sourcing and filtering shared code. Our work
contributes to software engineering research with a rich description of
coopetition in OSS ecosystems. Moreover, we also come up with several
implications for software firms in pursing a harmony participation in OSS

Determinants for Open Innovation and Innovation Performance towards Value Creation and Organization Performance for Bureaucratic Personnel Development
The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of open innovation and innovation performance toward value creation, and organizational performance for bureaucratic personnel development in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The conceptual framework of this study is adapted from the theoretical study of open innovation, and previous studies open innovation, innovation performance, value creation, and organizational performance. The samples (n = 179) were collected using the stratified and cluster sampling methods via offline and online questionnaires. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Model (SEM) were used to confirm the goodness of fit model and test the hypotheses. According to the research results, the determinants for open innovation and innovation performance have a significant impact on value creation and organizational performance. As a result, there are no significant differences in the regression paths of each factor, and open innovation is clearly the most powerful predictor of organizational performance. In conclusion, the study suggests that open innovation determinants such as technological advances or IT through value creation, including innovation performance, can support organizational performance

Digital resources serve as building-blocks in digital innovation, and they hold the potential to simultaneously be part of multiple value paths, offered through design recombination and assembled through use recombination. Building on this perspective, we offer the value spaces framework as a tool for better understanding value creation and capture in digital innovation. Leveraging Open-standard Interorganizational Information Systems for Process Adaptability and Alignment: An Empirical Analysis
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the value creation mechanisms of open-standard inter-organizational information system (OSIOS), which is a key technology to achieve Industry 4.0. Specifically, this study investigates how the internal assimilation and external diffusion of OSIOS help manufactures facilitate process adaptability and alignment in supply chain network.Design/methodology/approachA survey instrument was designed and administrated to collect data for this research. Using three-stage least squares estimation, the authors empirically tested a number of hypothesized relationships based on a sample of 308 manufacturing firms in China.FindingsThe results of the study show that OSIOS can perform as value creation mechanisms to enable process adaptability and alignment. In addition, the impact of OSIOS internal assimilation is inversely U-shaped where the positive effect on process adaptability will become negative after an extremum point is reached.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the existing literature by providing insights on how OSIOS can improve supply chain integration and thus promote the achievement of industry 4.0. By revealing a U-shaped relationship between OSIOS assimilation and process adaptability, this study fills previous research gap by advancing the understanding on the value creation mechanisms of information systems deployment
