Enhancing Learning Outcomes through Experiential Learning: Using Open-Source Systems to Teach Enterprise Systems and Business Process Management

    Get PDF
Enterprise systems and business process management are the two key information technologies to integrate the functions of a modern business into a coherent and efficient system. While the benefits of these systems are easy to describe, students, especially those without business experience, have difficulty appreciating how these systems are used to improve the efficiency of business operations. This paper reports on a project to provide experiential learning to beginning business students. We focus on open-source enterprise and process management systems to investigate whether the benefits can be provided even by small institutions and without a large investment into commercial systems. The results of experimental studies are provided and suggest that hands-on learning on open-source systems can lead to improved learning outcomes. The main contribution is the demonstration that educators need not shy away from experiential learning when faced with the obstacles that large-scale commercial enterprise systems may present, but can instead choose a “bottom-up” approach of easily integrating enterprise systems into the curriculum to benefit student learning

Abstract Software documentation is a basic component of the software development process and it is very important in all the phases of a software system life cycle. It is plays a very important role from the point of view of both the software engineer and user. Software documentation usually includes textual documentation required by the Software engineering standards, API documentation, Wiki pages and source code comments. Surveys and studies indicate that the documentation is not always available and, if available, only partially addresses the developers' needs, as it is often wrong, incomplete, out-of-date and ambiguous. In the context of ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning, the relevance of the software documentation is even more important due to the complexity of such a kind of software systems and the strategic role they have within operative organizations. This paper focuses on the quality assessment of the documentation of ERP open source systems with the aim of understanding if they include high quality documentation for adequately support anyone want to adopt them and/or executing maintenance activities. Specifically, a quality model is defined and its application to three Open source software system is performed

A tradução e a customização constituem as principais tarefas neste processo. Esta framework foi validada através da sua aplicação a um ERP Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).Organizational system internationalization is relevant for promoting communication between organizations in different contexts. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are no exception. Internationalization and localization of software is the only way to adapt system to a business and to people, regarding a particular country or region. This dissertation presents an ERP Open Source (OS) localization framework, identifying the components, which must be located. The translation and customization are the main tasks in this process. This framework was validated by applying it in a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)

Flourish the Market of Open Source Enterprise Systems Through Cloud-Based Technology: An Perspective of Cross-Side Network Effects

Open source enterprise systems (OS-ES) have become an appealing option for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to bring powerful business computing tools into their organizations. However, the impact of OS-ES is still in their nascent stage because of the critical challenges they pose. We conclude that the challenges of OS-ES mainly come from three perspectives: limited economic scale, product-oriented business strategy, and insufficient product support. In this study, we propose that the emergence of cloud-based technology can catalyze the flourishing process of OS-ES market through leveraging both the OS-ES user-side and developer-side economic scale. Because of the two-sided nature of OS-ES market, we then draw on the cross-side network effects (CNEs) theory to explain the positive reinforcement loop between user-side adoption and developer-side engagement of OS-ES projects

Invited Paper: A Generalized, Enterprise-Level Systems Development Process Framework for Systems Analysis and Design Education

Current academic and industry discussions regarding systems development project approaches increasingly focus on agile development and/or DevOps, as these approaches are seen as more modern, streamlined, flexible, and, therefore, effective as compared to traditional plan-driven approaches. This extends to the current pedagogy for teaching systems analysis and design (SA&D). However, overemphasizing agile and DevOps neglects broader dimensions that are essential for planning and executing enterprise-level systems projects. Thus, a dilemma may arise: do we teach agile and DevOps techniques that may be inadequate for enterprise-level projects or do we teach the wider range of plan-driven skills and techniques that may conflict with the tenets and benefits of agile and DevOps? In this paper, we advocate for resolving this dilemma by adopting a generalized process framework that both fully supports enterprise-level projects but can also be selectively scaled back toward increased agility for smaller, less complex projects. In its full realization, this framework combines extensive project planning and up-front requirements with iterative delivery – an increasingly popular approach today for enterprise projects. In scaling back toward agile, the framework carefully accounts for system, environment, and team characteristics. Further, the model emphasizes issues frequently underemphasized by agile approaches, including the use of external software such as commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), Software- as-a-Service (SaaS), and open source products and components; the need for business-oriented project planning and justification; and support for change management to ensure successful system adoption. The framework thereby flexibly accommodates the full range of activities that software projects must support to be successful

Performance Evaluation and Comparison of Distributed Messaging Using Message Oriented Middleware

Message Oriented Middleware (MOM) is an enabling technology for modern event- driven applications that are typically based on publish/subscribe communication [Eugster03]. Enterprises typically contain hundreds of applications operating in environments with diverse databases and operating systems. Integration of these applications is required to coordinate the business process. Unfortunately, this is no easy task. Enterprise Integration, according to Brosey et al. (2001), aims to connect and combines people, processes, systems, and technologies to ensure that the right people and the right processes have the right information and the right resources at the right time [Brosey01]. Communication between different applications can be achieved by using synchronous and asynchronous communication tools. In synchronous communication, both parties involved must be online (for example, a telephone call), whereas in asynchronous communication, only one member needs to be online (email). Middleware is software that helps two applications communicate with one another. Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) and Object Request Brokers (ORB) are two types of synchronous middleware—when they send a request they must wait for an immediate reply. This can decrease an application’s performance when there is no need for synchronous communication. Even though asynchronous distributed messaging using message oriented middleware is widely used in industry, there is not enough work done in evaluating the performance of various open source Message oriented middleware. The objective of this work was to benchmark and evaluate three different open source MOM’s performance in publish/subscribe and point-to-point domains, functional comparison and qualitative study from developers perspective
