Leadership in, of, and for Smart Cities – Case Studies from Europe, America and Australia
This paper analyses leadership in, of and for smart cities. Using a multi-case study research design and Mode 2 research (based upon collaboration between a scholar and a practitioner) we explore smart cities initiatives in Europe (Amsterdam, Bristol & Milton Keynes), North and South America (Chicago & Curitiba) and Australia (Melbourne). We undertake a comparative analysis which looks at leadership through six lenses: place, purpose, person, position, process, performance. From our analysis four modes of smart city leadership emerge: smart cities as digital government; smart cities as digital driver for economic growth; smart cities as an open platform for digital socio-political innovation; and smart cities as an open platform for digital economy
2005 Community Foundation Global Status Report
In 1999 the International Programs department of the Council on Foundations and the newly-formed Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support-Community Foundations (WINGS-CF) sponsored a project to track for the first time the global development of community foundations. This resulted in 2000 in the publication of The Growth of Community Foundations Around the World. In 2003, WINGS-CF reshaped and updated the report to focus on international community foundation trends and developments since the previous report. It became the first in a series of three annual reports

2008 Community Foundation Global Status Report
Between 2000 and 2008, first the Council on Foundations (the first "home" to the WINGS Secretariat) and then WINGS itself published a series of reports on the growth and vitality of community foundations around the globe. In each case the lead researcher and author was Eleanor W. Sacks, who in turn was supported in her work by a global advisory group and WINGS Secretariat staff. We are grateful to Eleanor and the participants in the WINGS-Community Foundation network who helped to shape and inform the first decade of the report's life. Available to download: full summary report for 2008, including brief country status reports
A Global Gaze: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Grantmaking in the Global South and East
In 2008, when Funders for LGBTQ Issues released our last edition of A Global Gaze, we reported that total giving to LGBTI communities in the Global South and East more than doubled between 2005 and 2007, from 328 grants totaling US 26.2 million in 2007. In this, our third edition, we can report that in 2010 there were 713 grants totaling US $35,467,361 made by 64 funders worldwide (up from 40 in 2007). There is of course some peril in comparing 2010 numbers to 2007 numbers. Our findings must be taken together with the knowledge that the value of the dollar, the global economy, and local, regional, and global political climates have all undergone significant changes in the last three years

United States-Canada Trade and Economic Relationship: Prospects and Challenges
[Excerpt] The terrorist attacks of 2001 focused attention on the U.S.-Canadian border. Several bilateral initiatives have been undertaken to minimize disruption to commerce from added border security. The focus on the border has renewed interest in some quarters in greater economic integration, either through incremental measures such as greater regulatory cooperation or potentially larger goals such as a customs or monetary union. Congressional interest has focused mostly on trade disputes, and also on the ability of the two nations to continue their traditional volume of trade with heightened security on the border

Participation in the global knowledge commons : challenges and opportunities for research dissemination in developing countries
Due to improving Internet connectivity and a growing number of international initiatives, knowledge workers in developing countries are now getting access to scholarly and scientific publications and electronic resources at a level that is unmatched historically. This is highly significant, particularly in areas of medicine, agricultural and environmental sciences, and development literature that are much needed if developing countries are to meet the Millennium Development Goals. At the same time, the Open Access movement and the growing number of Open Archive Initiative (OAI) compliant institutional repositories promise to provide even greater access to resources and scientific publications that were previously inaccessible. These low cost technology and interoperability standards are also providing great opportunities for libraries and publishers in developing countries to disseminate local research and knowledge and to bridge the South-North knowledge gap. This article reviews these recent trends, discusses their significance for information access in developing countries, and provides recommendations for knowledge workers on how to actively participate in and contribute to the global knowledge commons
