CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and âenablersâ, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
Querying standardized EHRs by a Search Ontology XML extension (SOX).
Motivation: The previously developed Search Ontology (SO) allows domain experts to formally specify domain concepts, search terms associated to a domain, and rules describing domain concepts. So far, Lucene search queries can be generated from information contained in the SO and can be used for querying literature data bases or PubMed. However, this is still insufficient, since these queries are not well suited for querying XML documents because they are not following their structure. However, in the medical domain, many information items are coded in XML. Thus, querying structured XML documents is crucial for retrieving similar cases or for identifying potential study participants. For example, information items of patients with a similar tumor classification documented in a certain section of the respective pathology report need to be retrieved. This requires a precise definition of queries. In this paper, we introduce a concept for the generation of such queries using a Search Ontology XML extension to enable semantic searches on structured data. Results: For a gain of precision, the paragraph of a document need to be specified, in which a specific information item expressed in a query is expected to appear. The Search Ontology XML Extension (SOX) connects search terms to certain sections in XML documents. The extension consists of a class which represents the XML structure and a relation between search terms and this XML structure. This enables an automatic generation of XPath expressions, which makes an efficient and precise search of structured pathology reports in XML databases possible. The combination of standardized Electronic Health Records with an ontology based query method promises a gain of precision, a high degree of interoperability and long term durability of both, XML documents and queries on XML documents
CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
Reference Model and Architecture for the Post-Platform Economy
The primary goal of this thesis is to propose a reference model and an accompanying software system architecture, which together can serve as a guiding framework for the analysis, design, and implementation of distributed market spaces. The benefit of such a framework is considered two-fold: On the one hand, it provides insights essential for understanding various aspects and elements of self-organized and strictly decentralized online structures to facilitate the emergence of the post-platform economy. On the other hand, it serves as a blueprint for designing and implementing a distributed marketplace instance for a specific application context. It thus allows consumers and providers to set up and expand market spaces themselves, in which they can engage directly and reliably with complex product scenarios

Abstract. More and more applications require real-time processing of massive, dynamically generated, ordered data; order is an essential factor as it reflects recency or relevance. Semantic technologies risk being unable to meet the needs of such applications, as they are not equipped with the appropriate instruments for answering queries over massive, highly dynamic, ordered data sets. In this vision paper, we argue that some data management techniques should be exported to the context of semantic technologies, by integrating ordering with reasoning, and by using methods which are inspired by stream and rank-aware data management. We systematically explore the problem space, and point both to problems which have been successfully approached and to problems which still need fundamental research, in an attempt to stimulate and guide a paradigm shift in semantic technologies

SUPPORTING ENGINEERING DESIGN OF ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED MEDICAL DEVICES WITH KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT THROUGH ONTOLOGIES
Medical environments pose a substantial challenge for engineering designers. They combine significant knowledge demands with large investment for new product development and severe consequences in the case of design failure. Engineering designers must contend with an often-chaotic environment to which they have limited access and familiarity, a user base that is difficult to engage and highly diverse in many attributes, and a market structure that often pits stakeholders against one another. As medical care in general moves towards personalized models and surgical tools towards less invasive options emerging manufacturing technologies in additive manufacturing offer significant potential for the design of highly innovative medical devices. At the same time however these same technologies also introduce yet more challenges to the design process.
This dissertation presents a knowledge-based approach to addressing the existing and emerging challenges of medical device design. The approach aims to address these challenges using knowledge captured in a suite of modular ontologies modeling knowledge domains that must be considered in medical device design. These include ontologies for understanding clinical context, human factors, regulation, enterprise, and manufacturability. Together these ontologies support design ideation, knowledge capture, and design verification. These ontologies are subsequently used to formulate a comprehensive knowledge framework for medical device design, and to enable an innovative design process. Case studies analyzing the design of surgical tools in several medical specialties are used to assess the capabilities of this approach
An Ontology Based Approach Towards A Universal Description Framework for Home Networks
Current home networks typically involve two or more machines sharing network resources. The vision for the home network has grown from a simple computer network, to every day appliances embedded with network capabilities. In this environment devices and services within the home can interoperate, regardless of protocol
or platform. Network clients can discover required resources by performing network discovery over component descriptions. Common approaches to this discovery process involve simple matching of keywords or attribute/value pairings.
Interest emerging from the Semantic Web community has led to ontology languages being applied to network domains, providing a logical and semantically rich approach to both describing and discovering network components. In much of the existing work within this domain, developers have focused on defining new description frameworks in isolation from existing protocol frameworks and vocabularies.
This work proposes an ontology-based description framework which takes the
ontology approach to the next step, where existing description frameworks are in-
corporated into the ontology-based framework, allowing discovery mechanisms to
cover multiple existing domains. In this manner, existing protocols and networking
approaches can participate in semantically-rich discovery processes. This framework
also includes a system architecture developed for the purpose of reconciling existing
home network solutions with the ontology-based discovery process.
This work also describes an implementation of the approach and is deployed within a home-network environment. This implementation involves existing home networking frameworks, protocols and components, allowing the claims of this work to be examined and evaluated from a âreal-worldâ perspective
