Maritime data integration and analysis: Recent progress and research challenges
The correlated exploitation of heterogeneous data sources offering very large historical as well as streaming data is important to increasing the accuracy of computations when analysing and predicting future states of moving entities. This is particularly critical in the maritime domain, where online tracking, early recognition of events, and real-time forecast of anticipated trajectories of vessels are crucial to safety and operations at sea. The objective of this paper is to review current research challenges and trends tied to the integration, management, analysis, and visualization of objects moving at sea as well as a few suggestions for a successful development of maritime forecasting and decision-support systems

Increasing maritime situation awareness via trajectory detection, enrichment and recognition of events
The research presented in this paper aims to show the deployment and use of advanced technologies towards processing surveillance data for the detection of events, contributing to maritime situation awareness via trajectoriesâ detection, synopses generation and semantic enrichment of trajectories. We first introduce the context of the maritime domain and then the main principles of the big data architecture developed so far within the European funded H2020 datAcron project. From the integration of large maritime trajectory datasets, to the generation of synopses and the detection of events, the main functions of the datAcron architecture are developed and discussed. The potential for detection and forecasting of complex events at sea is illustrated by preliminary experimental results

Big data analytics for time critical maritime and aerial mobility forecasting

Geospatial Narratives and their Spatio-Temporal Dynamics: Commonsense Reasoning for High-level Analyses in Geographic Information Systems
The modelling, analysis, and visualisation of dynamic geospatial phenomena
has been identified as a key developmental challenge for next-generation
Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this context, the envisaged
paradigmatic extensions to contemporary foundational GIS technology raises
fundamental questions concerning the ontological, formal representational, and
(analytical) computational methods that would underlie their spatial
information theoretic underpinnings.
We present the conceptual overview and architecture for the development of
high-level semantic and qualitative analytical capabilities for dynamic
geospatial domains. Building on formal methods in the areas of commonsense
reasoning, qualitative reasoning, spatial and temporal representation and
reasoning, reasoning about actions and change, and computational models of
narrative, we identify concrete theoretical and practical challenges that
accrue in the context of formal reasoning about `space, events, actions, and
change'. With this as a basis, and within the backdrop of an illustrated
scenario involving the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban narratives, we address
specific problems and solutions techniques chiefly involving `qualitative
abstraction', `data integration and spatial consistency', and `practical
geospatial abduction'. From a broad topical viewpoint, we propose that
next-generation dynamic GIS technology demands a transdisciplinary scientific
perspective that brings together Geography, Artificial Intelligence, and
Cognitive Science.

Applying the Dynamic Region Connection Calculus to Exploit Geographic Knowledge in Maritime Surveillance
Proceedings of: 15th International Conference on Information Fusion (FUSION 2012), Singapore, 9-12 July 2012.Concerns about the protection of the global transport network have risen the need of new security and surveillance systems. Ontology-based and fusion systems represent an attractive alternative for practical applications focused on fast and accurate responses. This paper presents an architecture based on a geometric model to efficiently predict and calculate the topological relationships between spatial objects. This model aims to reduce the number of calculations by relying on a spatial data structure. The goal is the detection of threatening behaviors next to points of interest without a noticeable loss of efficiency. The architecture has been embedded in an ontology-based prototype compliant with the Joint Directors of Laboratories (JDL) model for Information Fusion. Web-based Geographical Visualization of Container Itineraries
Around 90% of the world cargo is transported in maritime containers, but only around 2% are physically inspected. This opens the possibility for illicit activities. A viable solution is to control containerized cargo through information-based risk analysis. Container route-based analysis has been considered a key factor in identifying potentially suspicious consignments. Essential part of itinerary analysis is the geographical visualization of the itinerary. Fusing uncertain knowledge and evidence for maritime situational awareness via Markov Logic Networks
The concepts of event and anomaly are important building blocks for developing a situational picture of the observed environment. We here relate these concepts to the JDL fusion model and demonstrate the power of Markov Logic Networks (MLNs) for encoding uncertain knowledge and compute inferences according to observed evidence. MLNs combine the expressive power of first-order logic and the probabilistic uncertainty management of Markov networks.
Within this framework, different types of knowledge (e.g. a priori, contextual) with associated uncertainty can be fused together for situation assessment by expressing unobservable complex events as a logical combination of simpler evidences.
We also develop a mechanism to evaluate the level of completion of complex events and show how, along with event probability, it could provide additional useful information to the operator.
Examples are demonstrated on two maritime scenarios of rules for event and anomaly detection
