Knowledge society arguments revisited in the semantic technologies era
In the light of high profile governmental and international efforts to realise the knowledge society, I review the arguments made for and against it from a technology standpoint. I focus on advanced knowledge technologies with applications on a large scale and in open- ended environments like the World Wide Web and its ambitious extension, the Semantic Web. I argue for a greater role of social networks in a knowledge society and I explore the recent developments in mechanised trust, knowledge certification, and speculate on their blending with traditional societal institutions. These form the basis of a sketched roadmap for enabling technologies for a knowledge society
Towards engineering ontologies for cognitive profiling of agents on the semantic web
Research shows that most agent-based collaborations
suffer from lack of flexibility. This is due to the fact that
most agent-based applications assume pre-defined
knowledge of agents’ capabilities and/or neglect basic
cognitive and interactional requirements in multi-agent
collaboration. The highlight of this paper is that it brings
cognitive models (inspired from cognitive sciences and HCI)
proposing architectural and knowledge-based requirements
for agents to structure ontological models for cognitive
profiling in order to increase cognitive awareness between
themselves, which in turn promotes flexibility, reusability
and predictability of agent behavior; thus contributing
towards minimizing cognitive overload incurred on humans.
The semantic web is used as an action mediating space,
where shared knowledge base in the form of ontological
models provides affordances for improving cognitive
awareness
On the emergent Semantic Web and overlooked issues
The emergent Semantic Web, despite being in its infancy, has already received a lotof attention from academia and industry. This resulted in an abundance of prototype systems and discussion most of which are centred around the underlying infrastructure. However, when we critically review the work done to date we realise that there is little discussion with respect to the vision of the Semantic Web. In particular, there is an observed dearth of discussion on how to deliver knowledge sharing in an environment such as the Semantic Web in effective and efficient manners. There are a lot of overlooked issues, associated with agents and trust to hidden assumptions made with respect to knowledge representation and robust reasoning in a distributed environment. These issues could potentially hinder further development if not considered at the early stages of designing Semantic Web systems. In this perspectives paper, we aim to help engineers and practitioners of the Semantic Web by raising awareness of these issues
Ontologies for the Interoperability of Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems in the scope of Energy and Power Systems
estudiar, experimentar y validar operaciones e interacciones competitivas,
Approaches to Semantic Web Services: An Overview and Comparison
Abstract. The next Web generation promises to deliver Semantic Web Services (SWS); services that are self-described and amenable to automated discovery, composition and invocation. A prerequisite to this, however, is the emergence and evolution of the Semantic Web, which provides the infrastructure for the semantic interoperability of Web Services. Web Services will be augmented with rich formal descriptions of their capabilities, such that they can be utilized by applications or other services without human assistance or highly constrained agreements on interfaces or protocols. Thus, Semantic Web Services have the potential to change the way knowledge and business services are consumed and provided on the Web. In this paper, we survey the state of the art of current enabling technologies for Semantic Web Services. In addition, we characterize the infrastructure of Semantic Web Services along three orthogonal dimensions: activities, architecture and service ontology. Further, we examine and contrast three current approaches to SWS according to the proposed dimensions
The next generation of interoperability agents in healthcare
Interoperability in health information systems is increasingly a requirement rather
than an option. Standards and technologies, such as multi-agent systems, have proven to be
powerful tools in interoperability issues. In the last few years, the authors have worked
on developing the Agency for Integration, Diffusion and Archive of Medical Information
(AIDA), which is an intelligent, agent-based platform to ensure interoperability in healthcare
units. It is increasingly important to ensure the high availability and reliability of systems.
The functions provided by the systems that treat interoperability cannot fail. This paper
shows the importance of monitoring and controlling intelligent agents as a tool to anticipate
problems in health information systems. The interaction between humans and agents through
an interface that allows the user to create new agents easily and to monitor their activities
in real time is also an important feature, as health systems evolve by adopting more features
and solving new problems. A module was installed in Centro Hospitalar do Porto, increasing
the functionality and the overall usability of AIDA.This work is funded by National Funds through the FCT-Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) within project PEst-OE/EEI/UI0752/2014. City Data Fusion: Sensor Data Fusion in the Internet of Things
Internet of Things (IoT) has gained substantial attention recently and play a
significant role in smart city application deployments. A number of such smart
city applications depend on sensor fusion capabilities in the cloud from
diverse data sources. We introduce the concept of IoT and present in detail ten
different parameters that govern our sensor data fusion evaluation framework.
We then evaluate the current state-of-the art in sensor data fusion against our
sensor data fusion framework. Our main goal is to examine and survey different
sensor data fusion research efforts based on our evaluation framework. The
major open research issues related to sensor data fusion are also presented.Comment: Accepted to be published in International Journal of Distributed
