    Environmental science applications with Rapid Integrated Mapping and analysis System (RIMS)

    The Rapid Integrated Mapping and analysis System (RIMS) has been developed at the University of New Hampshire as an online instrument for multidisciplinary data visualization, analysis and manipulation with a focus on hydrological applications. Recently it was enriched with data and tools to allow more sophisticated analysis of interdisciplinary data. Three different examples of specific scientific applications with RIMS are demonstrated and discussed. Analysis of historical changes in major components of the Eurasian pan-Arctic water budget is based on historical discharge data, gridded observational meteorological fields, and remote sensing data for sea ice area. Express analysis of the extremely hot and dry summer of 2010 across European Russia is performed using a combination of near-real time and historical data to evaluate the intensity and spatial distribution of this event and its socioeconomic impacts. Integrative analysis of hydrological, water management, and population data for Central Asia over the last 30 years provides an assessment of regional water security due to changes in climate, water use and demography. The presented case studies demonstrate the capabilities of RIMS as a powerful instrument for hydrological and coupled human-natural systems research

    Many Information Technology (IT) tools play a vital role in the business world due to their wider applicability. Extremely competitive retail environment necessitates retailers to choose new store locations strategically. GIS with its capability to manage, display and analyze business information spatially, is emerging as one of the powerful location intelligence IT tool.  The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of strategic retail outlet location through online Decision Support System (DSS) in Hyderabad Metropolitan city, India. The procedure makes use of data, information and software from Web-based Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to generate online analysis, mapping and visualization systems. These procedures are integrated and synchronized with appropriate data layers (multi data layer system) to arrive at better decisions.  This DSS combines different data layers through spatial methodological analysis to arrive at possible solution for ideal retail store location.     Exploring Remote Sensing Products Online with Giovanni for Studying Urbanization

    Recently, a Large amount of MODIS land products at multi-spatial resolutions have been integrated into the online system, Giovanni, to support studies on land cover and land use changes focused on Northern Eurasia and Monsoon Asia regions. Giovanni (Goddard Interactive Online Visualization ANd aNalysis Infrastructure) is a Web-based application developed by the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES-DISC) providing a simple and intuitive way to visualize, analyze, and access Earth science remotely-sensed and modeled data. The customized Giovanni Web portals (Giovanni-NEESPI and Giovanni-MAIRS) are created to integrate land, atmospheric, cryospheric, and social products, that enable researchers to do quick exploration and basic analyses of land surface changes and their relationships to climate at global and regional scales. This presentation documents MODIS land surface products in Giovanni system. As examples, images and statistical analysis results on land surface and local climate changes associated with urbanization over Yangtze River Delta region, China, using data in Giovanni are shown

    Text and Spatial-Temporal Data Visualization

    In this dissertation, we discuss a text visualization system, a tree drawing algorithm, a spatial-temporal data visualization paradigm and a tennis match visualization system. Corpus and corpus tools have become an important part of language teaching and learning. And yet text visualization is rarely used in this area. We present Text X-Ray, a Web tool for corpus-based language teaching and learning and the interactive text visualizations in Text X-Ray allow users to quickly examine a corpus or corpora at different levels of details: articles, paragraphs, sentences, and words. Level-based tree drawing is a common algorithm that produces intuitive and clear presentations of hierarchically structured information. However, new applications often introduces new aesthetic requirements that call for new tree drawing methods. We present an indented level-based tree drawing algorithm for visualizing parse trees of English language. This algorithm displays a tree with an aspect ratio that fits the aspect ratio of the newer computer displays, while presenting the words in a way that is easy to read. We discuss the design of the algorithm and its application in text visualization for linguistic analysis and language learning. A story is a chain of events. Each event has multiple dimensions, including time, location, characters, actions, and context. Storyline visualizations attempt to visually present the many dimensions of a story’s events and their relationships. Integrating the temporal and spatial dimension in a single visualization view is often desirable but highly challenging. One of the main reasons is that spatial data is inherently 2D while temporal data is inherently 1D. We present a storyline visualization technique that integrate both time and location information in a single view. Sports data visualization can be a useful tool for analyzing or presenting sports data. We present a new technique for visualizing tennis match data. It is designed as a supplement to online live streaming or live blogging of tennis matches and can retrieve data directly from a tennis match live blogging web site and display 2D interactive view of match statistics. Therefore, it can be easily integrated with the current live blogging platforms used by many news organizations. The visualization addresses the limitations of the current live coverage of tennis matches by providing a quick overview and also a great amount of details on demand

    Geospatial Data Indexing Analysis and Visualization via Web Services with Autonomic Resource Management

    With the exponential growth of the usage of web-based map services, the web GIS application has become more and more popular. Spatial data index, search, analysis, visualization and the resource management of such services are becoming increasingly important to deliver user-desired Quality of Service. First, spatial indexing is typically time-consuming and is not available to end-users. To address this, we introduce TerraFly sksOpen, an open-sourced an Online Indexing and Querying System for Big Geospatial Data. Integrated with the TerraFly Geospatial database [1-9], sksOpen is an efficient indexing and query engine for processing Top-k Spatial Boolean Queries. Further, we provide ergonomic visualization of query results on interactive maps to facilitate the user’s data analysis. Second, due to the highly complex and dynamic nature of GIS systems, it is quite challenging for the end users to quickly understand and analyze the spatial data, and to efficiently share their own data and analysis results with others. Built on the TerraFly Geo spatial database, TerraFly GeoCloud is an extra layer running upon the TerraFly map and can efficiently support many different visualization functions and spatial data analysis models. Furthermore, users can create unique URLs to visualize and share the analysis results. TerraFly GeoCloud also enables the MapQL technology to customize map visualization using SQL-like statements [10]. Third, map systems often serve dynamic web workloads and involve multiple CPU and I/O intensive tiers, which make it challenging to meet the response time targets of map requests while using the resources efficiently. Virtualization facilitates the deployment of web map services and improves their resource utilization through encapsulation and consolidation. Autonomic resource management allows resources to be automatically provisioned to a map service and its internal tiers on demand. v-TerraFly are techniques to predict the demand of map workloads online and optimize resource allocations, considering both response time and data freshness as the QoS target. The proposed v-TerraFly system is prototyped on TerraFly, a production web map service, and evaluated using real TerraFly workloads. The results show that v-TerraFly can accurately predict the workload demands: 18.91% more accurate; and efficiently allocate resources to meet the QoS target: improves the QoS by 26.19% and saves resource usages by 20.83% compared to traditional peak load-based resource allocation

    Lightning location systems (LLS) provide data on lightning activity such as lightning type, GPS location, exact time of the lightning stroke, lightning current amplitude, measurement error, etc. The proper application of LLS data using customized software support can be a powerful decision-making tool in the control, maintenance and development of power systems. The utilization of lightning data in power systems requires a customized software support with specific functionalities. Software functionalities include real time lightning activity visualization with alarm function; analysis, reports and historical lightning activity visualization; spatial correlation between lightning data and alarm zones around geographically represented power system’s objects (power lines, power facilities, etc.); calculation of lightning statistics; generation of wide area lightning density maps, generation of high resolution lightning density maps inspecting alarm zones around the power lines; real time correlation between lightning activity and the power system protection equipment (distant protection relays), gathered through the SCADA system.
