The excessive power electronics devices in the distribution systems have evolved the problem of power quality. Arc Furnaces, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), Computer power supplies play a major role in the deterioration in the quality power by injecting harmonics in the utility supply source. Extensive use of non-linear loads leads to a multitude of unwanted harmonics in the operation of the electrical system. Of these, the harmonics of current and voltage are the most significant. in this paper presented is the power quality and the Shunt Active Power Filter and the description of the Harmonics and Its Effects

Now-a-days, model predictive control (MPC) is very commonly used for three phase inverters. But conventional MPC suffers computational complexities as well as unstable switching frequency issues. To address these issues related with conventional MPC model, this paper aims to use the benefits of deep learning model for predictive switching control. In this paper, CNN-LSTM network based predictive control is proposed for three phase inverters. Along with predictive control LC filter is cascaded to reduce the harmonics. The model is simulated using SIMULINK under fixed and dynamic load condition. The result shows decreased THD under different load conditions. Finally, the result is validated with existing models and achieves better performance

Uncertainty and disturbance estimator design to shape and reduce the output impedance of inverter

Power inverters are becoming more and more common in the modern grid. Due to their switching nature, a passive filter is installed at the inverter output. This generates high output impedance which limits the inverter ability to maintain high power quality at the inverter output. This thesis deals with an impedance shaping approach to the design of power inverter control. The Uncertainty and Disturbance Estimator (UDE) is proposed as a candidate for direct formation of the inverter output impedance. The selection of UDE is motivated by the desire for the disturbance rejection control and the tracking controller to be decoupled. It is demonstrated in the thesis that due to this fact the UDE filter design directly influences the inverter output impedance and the reference model determines the inverter internal electromotive force. It was recently shown in the literature and further emphasized in this thesis that the classic low pass frequency design of the UDE cannot estimate periodical disturbances under the constraint of finite control bandwidth. Since for a power inverter both the reference signal and the disturbance signal are of periodical nature, the classic UDE lowpass filter design does not give optimal results. A new design approach is therefore needed. The thesis develops four novel designs of the UDE filter to significantly reduce the inverter output impedance and maintain low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the inverter output voltage. The first design is the based on a frequency selective filter. This filter design shows superiority in both observing and rejecting periodical disturbances over the classic low pass filter design. The second design uses a multi-band stop design to reject periodical disturbances with some uncertainty in the frequency. The third solution uses a classic low pass filter design combined with a time delay to match zero phase estimation of the disturbance at the relevant spectrum. Furthermore, this solution is combined with a resonant tracking controller to reduce the tracking steady-state error in the output voltage. The fourth solution utilizes a low-pass filter combined with multiple delays to increase the frequency robustness. This method shows superior performance over the multi-band-stop and the time delayed filter in steady-state. All the proposed methods are validated through extensive simulation and experimental results

Inverters are widely utilized in electric vehicle (EV) applications as a major voltage/current source for onboard battery chargers (OBC) and motor drive systems. The inverter performance is critical to the efficiency of EV system energy conversion and electronics system electro-magnetic interference (EMI) design. However, for AC systems, the bandwidth requirement is usually low compared with DC systems, and the control impact on the inverter differential-mode (DM) and common-mode (CM) performance are not well investigated. With the wide-band gap (WBG) device era, the switching capability of power electronics devices drastically improved. The DM/CM impact that was brought by the WBG device-based inverter becomes more serious and has not been completely understood. This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of on-board inverter control strategies and the corresponding DM/CM impact on the EV system. The OBC inverter control under vehicle-to-load (V2L) mode will be documented first. A virtual resistance damping method minimizes the nonlinear load harmonics, and a neutral balancing method regulates the unbalanced load impact through the fourth leg. In the motor drive system, a generalized CM voltage analytical model and a current ripple prediction model are built for understanding the system CM and DM stress with respect to different modulation methods, covering both 2-level and 3-level topologies. A novel CM EMI damping modulation scheme is proposed for 6-phase inverter applications. The performance comparison between the proposed methods and the conventional solution is carried out. Each topic is supported by the corresponding hardware platform and experimental validation

Industrial sectors rely on electrical inverter drives to power their various load segments. Because the majority of their load is nonlinear, their drive system behaviour is unpredictable. Manufacturers continue to invest much in research and development to ensure that the device can resist any disturbances caused by the power system or load-side changes. The literature in this field of study depicts numerous effects caused by harmonics, a sudden inrush of currents, power interruption in all phases, leakage current effects and torque control of the system, among others. These and numerous other effects have been discovered as a result of research, and the inverter drive has been enhanced to a more advanced device than its earlier version. Despite these measures, inverter drives continue to operate poorly and frequently fail throughout the warranty term. This failure analysis is used as the basis for this research work, which presents a method for forecasting faulty sections using power system parameters. The said parameters were obtained by field-test dataset analysis in industrial premises. The prediction parameter is established by the examination of field research test data. The same data are used to train the machine learning system for future pre-emptive action. When exposed to live data feeds, the algorithm may forecast the future and suggest the same. Thus, when comparing the current status of the device to the planned study effort, the latter provides an advantage in terms of safeguarding the device and avoiding a brief period of total shutdown. As a result, the machine learning model was trained using the tested dataset and employed for prediction purposes; as a result, it provides a more accurate prediction, which benefits end consumers rather than improving the power system\u27s grid-side difficulties

Simulation and testing of a power converter for aircraft AC electric power generation system using software elimination of higher harmonics

This paper presents the results of simulation and practical tests of the inverter-based power converter with a sine output filter designed for implementation in an aircraft power system. In order to reduce the output voltage harmonic distortion, the converter utilises active software harmonics filtering. This work provides an analysis of the converter performance under two control algorithms applied for the active filtering operation. The first control algorithm is based on discrete Fourier transform (DFT) where the control system injects measured higher harmonics with inverse polarity into the inverter command voltage and DFT provides the measurement of the converter output voltage. The second control method is based on repetitive controller (RC) algorithms which adjusts the inverter command voltage using a self-learning approach. The second method significantly reduces the demand for CPU computational resources. The software filtering in both systems shows a good performance and ensures the converter output voltage with less than 5% THD under all load conditions. This paper discusses the structures for both proposed control systems as well as the implementation in MATLAB models and microcontroller software. Both algorithms are modelled in software and implemented in a practical microcontroller. The advantages of the RC-based control method are demonstrated through the software analysis and performance of the system

On Deep Machine Learning Based Techniques for Electric Power Systems

This thesis provides deep machine learning-based solutions to real-time mitigation of power quality disturbances such as flicker, voltage dips, frequency deviations, harmonics, and interharmonics using active power filters (APF). In an APF the processing delays reduce the performance when the disturbance to be mitigated is tima varying. The the delays originate from software (response time delay) and hardware (reaction time delay). To reduce the response time delays of APFs, this thesis propose and investigate several different techniques. First a technique based on multiple synchronous reference frame (MSRF) and order-optimized exponential smoothing (ES) to decrease the settling time delay of lowpass filtering steps. To reduce the computational time, this method is implemented in a parallel processing using a graphics processing unit (GPU) to estimate the time-varying harmonics and interharmonics of currents. Furthermore, the MSRF and three machine learning-based solutions are developed to predict future values of voltage and current in electric power systems which can mitigate the effects of the response and reaction time delays of the APFs. In the first and second solutions, a Butterworth filter is used to lowpass filter the\ua0 dq\ua0 components, and linear prediction and long short-term memory (LSTM) are used to predict the filtered\ua0 dq\ua0 components. The third solution is an end-to-end ML-based method developed based on a combination of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and LSTM. The Simulink implementation of the proposed ML-based APF is carried out to compensate for the current waveform harmonics, voltage dips, and flicker in Simulink environment embedded AI computing system Jetson TX2.\ua0In another study, we propose Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), a reinforcement learning (RL) method to replace the controller loops and estimation blocks such as PID, MSRF, and lowpass filters in grid-forming inverters. In a conventional approach it is well recognized that the controller tuning in the differen loops are difficult as the tuning of one loop influence the performance in other parts due to interdependencies. In DDPG the control policy is derived by optimizing a reward function which measure the performance in a data-driven fashion based on extensive experiments of the inverter in a simulation environment.\ua0Compared to a PID-based control architecture, the DDPG derived control policy leads to a solution where the response and reaction time delays are decreased by a factor of five in the investigated example.\ua0Classification of voltage dips originating from cable faults is another topic addressed in this thesis work. The Root Mean Square (RMS) of the voltage dips is proposed as preprocessing step to ease the feature learning for the developed\ua0 LSTM based classifier. Once a cable faults occur, it need to be located and repaired/replaced in order to restore the grid operation. Due to the high importance of stability in the power generation of renewable energy sources, we aim to locate high impedance cable faults in DC microgrid clusters which is a challenging case among different types of faults. The developed Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm process the maximum amplitude and\ua0 di/dt\ua0 of the current waveform of the fault as features, and the localization task is carried out with\ua0 95 %\ua0 accuracy.\ua0Two ML-based solutions together with a two-step feature engineering method are proposed to classify Partial Discharges (PD) originating from pulse width modulation (PWM) excitation in high voltage power electronic devices. As a first step, maximum amplitude, time of occurrence, area under PD curve, and time distance of each PD are extracted as features of interest. The extracted features are concatenated to form patterns for the ML algorithms as a second step. The suggested feature classification using the proposed ML algorithms resulted in\ua0 95.5 %\ua0 and\ua0 98.3 %\ua0\ua0 accuracy on a test data set using ensemble bagged decision trees and LSTM networks
