Integrating expert-based objectivist and nonexpert-based subjectivist paradigms in landscape assessment
This thesis explores the integration of objective and subjective measures of landscape aesthetics, particularly focusing on crowdsourced geo-information. It addresses the increasing importance of considering public perceptions in national landscape governance, in line with the European Landscape Convention's emphasis on public involvement. Despite this, national landscape assessments often remain expert-centric and top-down, facing challenges in resource constraints and limited public engagement. The thesis leverages Web 2.0 technologies and crowdsourced geographic information, examining correlations between expert-based metrics of landscape quality and public perceptions. The Scenic-Or-Not initiative for Great Britain, GIS-based Wildness spatial layers, and LANDMAP dataset for Wales serve as key datasets for analysis.
The research investigates the relationships between objective measures of landscape wildness quality and subjective measures of aesthetics. Multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) reveals significant correlations, with different wildness components exhibiting varying degrees of association. The study suggests the feasibility of incorporating wildness and scenicness measures into formal landscape aesthetic assessments. Comparing expert and public perceptions, the research identifies preferences for water-related landforms and variations in upland and lowland typologies. The study emphasizes the agreement between experts and non-experts on extreme scenic perceptions but notes discrepancies in mid-spectrum landscapes. To overcome limitations in systematic landscape evaluations, an integrative approach is proposed. Utilizing XGBoost models, the research predicts spatial patterns of landscape aesthetics across Great Britain, based on the Scenic-Or-Not initiatives, Wildness spatial layers, and LANDMAP data. The models achieve comparable accuracy to traditional statistical models, offering insights for Landscape Character Assessment practices and policy decisions. While acknowledging data limitations and biases in crowdsourcing, the thesis discusses the necessity of an aggregation strategy to manage computational challenges. Methodological considerations include addressing the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) associated with aggregating point-based observations. The thesis comprises three studies published or submitted for publication, each contributing to the understanding of the relationship between objective and subjective measures of landscape aesthetics. The concluding chapter discusses the limitations of data and methods, providing a comprehensive overview of the research
The Analysis of Novice English Teacher Talk in Junior High School under SETT Framework
In the realm of English teaching, teacher talk stands as a pivotal instructional instrument, serving both as a vital tool for teachers and a primary conduit for knowledge input for students. Effective classroom instruction is intricately woven with the dynamic, two-way interaction between teachers and students, which is expertly guided by the teacher talk. While numerous scholars have delved into the exploration of teacher talk, there remains a dearth of research investigating the specific landscape of novice English teachers’ classroom talk, particularly within the framework of Walsh’s Self-Evaluation of Teacher Talk (SETT). This study addresses this gap by observing the classes of four novice English teachers in junior high schools based on Walsh’s SETT framework to meticulously examine the current state of novice middle school English teachers’ classroom discourse. The objective is to cultivate teachers’ reflective awareness regarding their own discourse in the classroom and enhance their capacity to critically evaluate its efficacy as well as elevating the overall effectiveness of English classroom interactions in the context of secondary education
On the Generation of Realistic and Robust Counterfactual Explanations for Algorithmic Recourse
This recent widespread deployment of machine learning algorithms presents many new challenges. Machine learning algorithms are usually opaque and can be particularly difficult to interpret. When humans are involved, algorithmic and automated decisions can negatively impact people’s lives. Therefore, end users would like to be insured against potential harm. One popular way to achieve this is to provide end users access to algorithmic recourse, which gives end users negatively affected by algorithmic decisions the opportunity to reverse unfavorable decisions, e.g., from a loan denial to a loan acceptance. In this thesis, we design recourse algorithms to meet various end user needs. First, we propose methods for the generation of realistic recourses. We use generative models to suggest recourses likely to occur under the data distribution. To this end, we shift the recourse action from the input space to the generative model’s latent space, allowing to generate counterfactuals that lie in regions with data support. Second, we observe that small changes applied to the recourses prescribed to end users likely invalidate the suggested recourse after being nosily implemented in practice. Motivated by this observation, we design methods for the generation of robust recourses and for assessing the robustness of recourse algorithms to data deletion requests. Third, the lack of a commonly used code-base for counterfactual explanation and algorithmic recourse algorithms and the vast array of evaluation measures in literature make it difficult to compare the per formance of different algorithms. To solve this problem, we provide an open source benchmarking library that streamlines the evaluation process and can be used for benchmarking, rapidly developing new methods, and setting up new
experiments. In summary, our work contributes to a more reliable interaction of end users and machine learned models by covering fundamental aspects of the recourse process and suggests new solutions towards generating realistic and robust counterfactual explanations for algorithmic recourse
Learning Interpretable Models of Aircraft Handling Behaviour by Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback
We propose a method to capture the handling abilities of fast jet pilots in a software model via reinforcement learning (RL) from human preference feedback. We use pairwise preferences over simulated flight trajectories to learn an interpretable rule-based model called a reward tree, which enables the automated scoring of trajectories alongside an explanatory rationale. We train an RL agent to execute high-quality handling behaviour by using the reward tree as the objective, and thereby generate data for iterative preference collection and further refinement of both tree and agent. Experiments with synthetic preferences show reward trees to be competitive with uninterpretable neural network reward models on quantitative and qualitative evaluations
Application of Crowdsourcing in User Experience collection – a case study of Malayalam mobile applications
Purpose – This paper aims to prove the following hypothesis Problem Statement: HYPOTHESIS (1) User Experience collection of mobile applications can be done using the Crowdsourcing mechanism; (2) User Experience collection of mobile applications are influenced by the mindset of Crowdmembers, culture/ethnicity/social background, ease of interface use and rewards, among other factors. Design/methodology/approach – The authors of this paper, did a literature review first to find if Crowdsourcing was applicable and a used method to solve problems in Software Engineering. This helped us to narrow down the application of Crowdsourcing to the Requirements Engineering-Usability (User Experience) collection. User experience collection of two Malayalam language-based mobile applications, AarogyaSetu and BevQ was done as the next step. Incorporating findings from Study I, another study using AarogyaSetu and Manglish was launched as Study II. The results from both cases were consolidated and analyzed. Significant concerns relating to expectations of Crowd members with User Experience collection were unraveled and the purpose of Study was accomplished. Findings – (1) Crowdsourcing is and can be used in Software Engineering activities. (2) Crowd members have expectations (motivating factors) of User Interface and other elements that enable them to be an effective contributor. (3) An individual’s environment and mindset (character) are influential in him becoming a contributor in Crowdsourcing. (4) Culture and social practices of a region strongly affects the crowd-participating decision of an individual. Originality/value – This is purely self-done work. The value of this research work is two-fold. Crowdsourcing is endorsed significant in Software Engineering tasks, especially in User Experience collection of mobile applications. Two, the Crowd service requesters can be careful about designing the questionnaire for Crowdsourcing. They have to be aware and prepared to meet the expectations of the Crowd. This can ensure the active participation of potential contributors. Future researchers can use the results of this work to base their research on similar purposes
Deep Learning Techniques for Electroencephalography Analysis
In this thesis we design deep learning techniques for training deep neural networks on electroencephalography (EEG) data and in particular on two problems, namely EEG-based motor imagery decoding and EEG-based affect recognition, addressing challenges associated with them. Regarding the problem of motor imagery (MI) decoding, we first consider the various kinds of domain shifts in the EEG signals, caused by inter-individual differences (e.g. brain anatomy, personality and cognitive profile). These domain shifts render multi-subject training a challenging task and impede robust cross-subject generalization. We build a two-stage model ensemble architecture and propose two objectives to train it, combining the strengths of curriculum learning and collaborative training. Our subject-independent experiments on the large datasets of Physionet and OpenBMI, verify the effectiveness of our approach. Next, we explore the utilization of the spatial covariance of EEG signals through alignment techniques, with the goal of learning domain-invariant representations. We introduce a Riemannian framework that concurrently performs covariance-based signal alignment and data augmentation, while training a convolutional neural network (CNN) on EEG time-series. Experiments on the BCI IV-2a dataset show that our method performs superiorly over traditional alignment, by inducing regularization to the weights of the CNN. We also study the problem of EEG-based affect recognition, inspired by works suggesting that emotions can be expressed in relative terms, i.e. through ordinal comparisons between different affective state levels. We propose treating data samples in a pairwise manner to infer the ordinal relation between their corresponding affective state labels, as an auxiliary training objective. We incorporate our objective in a deep network architecture which we jointly train on the tasks of sample-wise classification and pairwise ordinal ranking. We evaluate our method on the affective datasets of DEAP and SEED and obtain performance improvements over deep networks trained without the additional ranking objective
Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law
This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI.
