    A Personalized System for Conversational Recommendations

    Searching for and making decisions about information is becoming increasingly difficult as the amount of information and number of choices increases. Recommendation systems help users find items of interest of a particular type, such as movies or restaurants, but are still somewhat awkward to use. Our solution is to take advantage of the complementary strengths of personalized recommendation systems and dialogue systems, creating personalized aides. We present a system -- the Adaptive Place Advisor -- that treats item selection as an interactive, conversational process, with the program inquiring about item attributes and the user responding. Individual, long-term user preferences are unobtrusively obtained in the course of normal recommendation dialogues and used to direct future conversations with the same user. We present a novel user model that influences both item search and the questions asked during a conversation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system in significantly reducing the time and number of interactions required to find a satisfactory item, as compared to a control group of users interacting with a non-adaptive version of the system

    Toward a relational concept of uncertainty: about knowing too little, knowing too differently, and accepting not to know

    Uncertainty of late has become an increasingly important and controversial topic in water resource management, and natural resources management in general. Diverse managing goals, changing environmental conditions, conflicting interests, and lack of predictability are some of the characteristics that decision makers have to face. This has resulted in the application and development of strategies such as adaptive management, which proposes flexibility and capability to adapt to unknown conditions as a way of dealing with uncertainties. However, this shift in ideas about managing has not always been accompanied by a general shift in the way uncertainties are understood and handled. To improve this situation, we believe it is necessary to recontextualize uncertainty in a broader wayÂżrelative to its role, meaning, and relationship with participants in decision makingÂżbecause it is from this understanding that problems and solutions emerge. Under this view, solutions do not exclusively consist of eliminating or reducing uncertainty, but of reframing the problems as such so that they convey a different meaning. To this end, we propose a relational approach to uncertainty analysis. Here, we elaborate on this new conceptualization of uncertainty, and indicate some implications of this view for strategies for dealing with uncertainty in water management. Since that, machine learning gained in interest in the scientific community involved in human- machine interaction and raised in the abstraction scale. It moved from fundamental signal processing to language understanding and generation, emotion and mood recogni- tion and even dialogue management or robotics control. So far, existing machine learning techniques have often been considered as a solution to some problems raised by inter- active systems. Yet, interaction is also the source of new challenges for machine learning and offers new interesting practical but also theoretical problems to solve. In this paper, we address these challenges and describe why research in machine learning and interactive systems should converge in the future

    Online backchannel synthesis evaluation with the switching Wizard of Oz

    In this paper, we evaluate a backchannel synthesis algorithm in an online conversation between a human speaker and a virtual listener. We adopt the Switching Wizard of Oz (SWOZ) approach to assess behavior synthesis algorithms online. A human speaker watches a virtual listener that is either controlled by a human listener or by an algorithm. The source switches at random intervals. Speakers indicate when they feel they are no longer talking to a human listener. Analysis of these responses reveals patterns of inappropriate behavior in terms of quantity and timing of backchannels

    Recent project-management literature and high-profile disasters—the financial crisis, the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the Fukushima nuclear accident—illustrate the flaws of traditional risk models for complex projects. This research examines how various groups with interests in the Arctic offshore define risks. The findings link the wicked problem framework and the emerging paradigm of Project Management of the Second Order (PM-2). Wicked problems are problems that are unstructured, complex, irregular, interactive, adaptive, and novel. The authors synthesize literature on the topic to offer strategies for navigating wicked problems, provide new variables to deconstruct traditional risk models, and integrate objective and subjective schools of risk analysis

Such systems are more useful when they personalize themselves to each user?s preferences, thus making the recommendation process more efficient and effective. In this paper, we present a new type of recommendation system that carries out a personalized dialogue with the user. This system ? the Adaptive Place Advisor ? treats item selection as an interactive, conversational process, with the program inquiring about item attributes and the user responding. The system incorporates a user model that contains item, attribute, and value preferences, which it updates during each conversation and maintains across sessions. The Place Advisor uses both the conversational context and the user model to retrieve candidate items from a case base. The system then continues to ask questions, using personalized heuristics to select which attribute to ask about next, presenting complete items to the user only when a few remain. We report experimental results demonstrating the effectiveness of user modeling in reducing the time and number of interactions required to find a satisfactory item
