    Database development and intranet based image included database management system for ballistic firearm identification system

    The process of imaging, collecting and searching a cartridge case to identifying its suspected firearm is a time consuming procedure. Within this study, a cartridge case identification database management system in an Intranet environment is designed and implemented, thus enabling firearm examiners from different forensic laboratories to engage firearm identification without the constraints of time and location. Specifically, the study investigates appropriate database management system for image involved and Intranet secured ballistics firearm identification database. The results demonstrated that a computerized firearm identification system could be implemented in Intranet with a secure, scalable, performable Intranet database management system

    Firearm forensics based on ballistics cartridge case image segmentation using colour invariants

    Ballistics firearm identification based on image processing is of paramount importance in criminal investigation. The efficiency of traditional ballistics imaging system is heavily dependent upon the expertise and experience of end-user. An intelligent ballistics imaging system is highly demanded to address this issues. The segmentation of cartridge case object from the original image is a key step to subsequent process. It is very difficult to segment cartridge case from the original image using traditional threshold based methods due to the shadows or unlimited environments to acquire image. In this paper, we proposed a novel approach based upon the colour invariant and geometrical shape of objects. The experimental results show the proposed method can precisely segment the objects in various images such as heavy shadow, low contrast, uneven illumination etc

To view a copy of this licence, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/.A crime scene can provide valuable evidence critical to explain reason and modality of the occurred crime, and it can also lead to the arrest of criminals. The type of evidence collected by crime scene investigators or by law enforcement may accordingly effective involved cases. Bullets and cartridge cases examination is of paramount importance in forensic science because they may contain traces of microscopic striations, impressions and markings, which are unique and reproducible as “ballistic fingerprints”. The analysis of bullets and cartridge cases is a complicated and challenging process, typically based on optical comparison, leading to the identification of the employed firearm. New methods have recently been proposed for more accurate comparisons, which rely on three-dimensionally reconstructed data. This paper aims at further advancing recent methods by introducing a novel immersive technique for ballistics comparison by means of Virtual Reality. Users can three-dimensionally examine the cartridge cases shapes through intuitive natural gestures, from any vantage viewpoint (including internal iper-magnified views), while having at their disposal sets of visual aids which could not be easily implemented in desktop-based applications. A user study was conducted to assess viability and performance of our solution, which involved fourteen individuals acquainted with the standard procedures used by law enforcement agencies. Results clearly indicated that our approach lead to faster adaptation of users to the UI/UX and more accurate and explainable ballistics examination results.Peer reviewe

    Image matching of firearm fingerprints

    A spent cartridge case exhibits characteristic markings (firearm fingerprint) that can be used to identify the type and possibly make of weapon in which the cartridge was fired. This report details research into the use of discriminant analysis for the purpose of matching spent rim-fire cartridge cases to specific make and model firearms. The discrimination and classification are based on several scalar shape parameters for the two-dimensional silhouette of the firing pin (FP) impression-- shape factor calculated from the second order moment of inertia, G factor calculated from the distance transform, and the P2A factor- as well as the distance between the centre of the cartridge case and the centroid of the FP impression, and the orientation of the principal centroidal axes associated with the FP impression. Classification results for two case studies are detailed: (i) 3 different make/model weapons producing different shaped FP impressions, and (ii) 5 different make/model weapons each producing a rectangular FP impression

    A critical review of the current state of forensic science knowledge and its integration in legal systems

    Forensic science has a significant historical and contemporary relationship with the criminal justice system. It is a relationship between two disciplines whose origins stem from different backgrounds. It is trite that effective communication assist in resolving underlying problems in any given context. However, a lack of communication continues to characterise the intersection between law and science. As recently as 2019, a six-part symposium on the use of forensic science in the criminal justice system again posed the question on how the justice system could ensure the reliability of forensic science evidence presented during trials. As the law demands finality, science is always evolving and can never be considered finite or final. Legal systems do not always adapt to the nature of scientific knowledge, and are not willing to abandon finality when that scientific knowledge shifts. Advocacy plays an important role in the promotion of forensic science, particularly advocacy to the broader scientific community for financial support, much needed research and more testing. However, despite its important function, advocacy should not be conflated with science. The foundation of advocacy is a cause; whereas the foundation of science is fact. The objective of this research was to conduct a qualitative literature review of the field of forensic science; to identify gaps in the knowledge of forensic science and its integration in the criminal justice system. The literature review will provide researchers within the field of forensic science with suggested research topics requiring further examination and research. To achieve its objective, the study critically analysed the historical development of, and evaluated the use of forensic science evidence in legal systems generally, including its role regarding the admissibility or inadmissibility of the evidence in the courtroom. In conclusion, it was determined that the breadth of forensic scientific knowledge is comprehensive but scattered. The foundational underpinning of the four disciplines, discussed in this dissertation, has been put to the legal test on countless occasions. Some gaps still remain that require further research in order to strengthen the foundation of the disciplines.     Identificación de armas de fuego mediante técnicas de reconocimiento en el procesamiento digital de imágenes

    En muchos asesinatos o robos se ven involucradas armas de fuego (especialmente pistolas) que dejan impresas las características identificativas en los cartuchos disparados y son conocidas como la “huella digital” del arma de fuego que fue accionada. Estas características son impresas por las herramientas que componen el arma y son de gran utilidad para el investigador balístico al momento de dictar un juicio ante un tribunal de justicia para hallar al culpable del crimen. Esta identificación de armas de fuego se puede lograr gracias a las marcas que se dejan en el culote impresas por el eyector y a las marcas que son llamadas estriado que son impresas en la bala debido al rose de esta con el interior del cañón, siendo de gran utilidad a la hora de realizar el cotejo. Los parámetros descritos anteriormente son fundamentales a la hora de la identificación de armas de fuego ya que estos arrojan patrones únicos que se dejan a la hora de la accionar una pistola. En la actualidad se han desarrollado software de identificación digital de armas de fuego con el propósito de agilizar el proceso y aumentar la eficacia y exactitud del dictamen realizado por el perito haciendo su labor mucho más rápido y fácil. En nuestro trabajo de investigación se hace una revisión profunda acerca de las técnicas empleadas para el desarrollo de softwares de identificación que se han empleado para la extracción de características y los métodos estadísticos utilizados para juzgar la singularidad de los especímenes balísticos y determinar cuál es la más apropiada y que arroje mejores resultados al momento de identificar el arma de fuego
