SAFA : a semi-asynchronous protocol for fast federated learning with low overhead
Federated learning (FL) has attracted increasing attention as a promising approach to driving a vast number of end devices with artificial intelligence. However, it is very challenging to guarantee the efficiency of FL considering the unreliable nature of end devices while the cost of device-server communication cannot be neglected. In this paper, we propose SAFA, a semi-asynchronous FL protocol, to address the problems in federated learning such as low round efficiency and poor convergence rate in extreme conditions (e.g., clients dropping offline frequently). We introduce novel designs in the steps of model distribution, client selection and global aggregation to mitigate the impacts of stragglers, crashes and model staleness in order to boost efficiency and improve the quality of the global model. We have conducted extensive experiments with typical machine learning tasks. The results demonstrate that the proposed protocol is effective in terms of shortening federated round duration, reducing local resource wastage, and improving the accuracy of the global model at an acceptable communication cost
FedVision: An Online Visual Object Detection Platform Powered by Federated Learning
Visual object detection is a computer vision-based artificial intelligence
(AI) technique which has many practical applications (e.g., fire hazard
monitoring). However, due to privacy concerns and the high cost of transmitting
video data, it is highly challenging to build object detection models on
centrally stored large training datasets following the current approach.
Federated learning (FL) is a promising approach to resolve this challenge.
Nevertheless, there currently lacks an easy to use tool to enable computer
vision application developers who are not experts in federated learning to
conveniently leverage this technology and apply it in their systems. In this
paper, we report FedVision - a machine learning engineering platform to support
the development of federated learning powered computer vision applications. The
platform has been deployed through a collaboration between WeBank and Extreme
Vision to help customers develop computer vision-based safety monitoring
solutions in smart city applications. Over four months of usage, it has
achieved significant efficiency improvement and cost reduction while removing
the need to transmit sensitive data for three major corporate customers. To the
best of our knowledge, this is the first real application of FL in computer
vision-based tasks
A TAXONOMY OF MACHINE LEARNING-BASED FRAUD DETECTION SYSTEMS
As fundamental changes in information systems drive digitalization, the heavy reliance on computers today significantly increases the risk of fraud. Existing literature promotes machine learning as a potential solution approach for the problem of fraud detection as it is able able to detect patterns in large datasets efficiently. However, there is a lack of clarity and awareness on which components and functionalities of machine learning-based fraud detection systems exist and how these systems can be classified consistently. We draw on 54 identified relevant machine learning-based fraud detection systems to address this research gap and develop a taxonomic scheme. By deriving three archetypes of machine learning-based fraud detection systems, the taxonomy paves the way for research and practice to understand and advance fraud detection knowledge to combat fraud and abuse
6G White Paper on Edge Intelligence
In this white paper we provide a vision for 6G Edge Intelligence. Moving towards 5G and beyond the future 6G networks, intelligent solutions utilizing data-driven machine learning and artificial intelligence become crucial for several real-world applications including but not limited to, more efficient manufacturing, novel personal smart device environments and experiences, urban computing and autonomous traffic settings. We present edge computing along with other 6G enablers as a key component to establish the future 2030 intelligent Internet technologies as shown in this series of 6G White Papers. In this white paper, we focus in the domains of edge computing infrastructure and platforms, data and edge network management, software development for edge, and real-time and distributed training of ML/AI algorithms, along with security, privacy, pricing, and end-user aspects. We discuss the key enablers and challenges and identify the key research questions for the development of the Intelligent Edge services. As a main outcome of this white paper, we envision a transition from Internet of Things to Intelligent Internet of Intelligent Things and provide a roadmap for development of 6G Intelligent Edge
Fast deep autoencoder for federated learning
Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract]: This paper presents a novel, fast and privacy preserving implementation of deep autoencoders. DAEF (Deep AutoEncoder for Federated learning), unlike traditional neural networks, trains a deep autoencoder network in a non-iterative way, which drastically reduces training time. Training can be performed incrementally, in parallel and distributed and, thanks to its mathematical formulation, the information to be exchanged does not endanger the privacy of the training data. The method has been evaluated and compared with other state-of-the-art autoencoders, showing interesting results in terms of accuracy, speed and use of available resources. This makes DAEF a valid method for edge computing and federated learning, in addition to other classic machine learning scenarios. This work was supported in part by grant Machine Learning on the Edge - Ayudas Fundación BBVA a Equipos de Investigación Científica 2019; the Spanish National Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation (PID2019-109238GB-C22 and TED2021-130599A-I00); the Xunta de Galicia (ED431C 2022/44) and ERDF funds.
