    Building global and scalable systems with atomic multicast

    The rise of worldwide Internet-scale services demands large distributed systems. Indeed, when handling several millions of users, it is common to operate thousands of servers spread across the globe. Here, replication plays a central role, as it contributes to improve the user experience by hiding failures and by providing acceptable latency. In this thesis, we claim that atomic multicast, with strong and well-defined properties, is the appropriate abstraction to efficiently design and implement globally scalable distributed systems. Internet-scale services rely on data partitioning and replication to provide scalable performance and high availability. Moreover, to reduce user-perceived response times and tolerate disasters (i.e., the failure of a whole datacenter), services are increasingly becoming geographically distributed. Data partitioning and replication, combined with local and geographical distribution, introduce daunting challenges, including the need to carefully order requests among replicas and partitions. One way to tackle this problem is to use group communication primitives that encapsulate order requirements. While replication is a common technique used to design such reliable distributed systems, to cope with the requirements of modern cloud based ``always-on'' applications, replication protocols must additionally allow for throughput scalability and dynamic reconfiguration, that is, on-demand replacement or provisioning of system resources. We propose a dynamic atomic multicast protocol which fulfills these requirements. It allows to dynamically add and remove resources to an online replicated state machine and to recover crashed processes. Major efforts have been spent in recent years to improve the performance, scalability and reliability of distributed systems. In order to hide the complexity of designing distributed applications, many proposals provide efficient high-level communication abstractions. Since the implementation of a production-ready system based on this abstraction is still a major task, we further propose to expose our protocol to developers in the form of distributed data structures. B-trees for example, are commonly used in different kinds of applications, including database indexes or file systems. Providing a distributed, fault-tolerant and scalable data structure would help developers to integrate their applications in a distribution transparent manner. This work describes how to build reliable and scalable distributed systems based on atomic multicast and demonstrates their capabilities by an implementation of a distributed ordered map that supports dynamic re-partitioning and fast recovery. To substantiate our claim, we ported an existing SQL database atop of our distributed lock-free data structure.     Template B+ trees: an index scheme for fast data streams with distributed append-only stores

    Distributed systems are now commonly used to manage massive data flooding from the physical world, such as user-generated content from online social media and communication records from mobile phones. The new generation of distributed data management systems, such as HBase, Cassandra and Riak, are designed to perform queries and tuple insertions only. Other database operations such as deletions and updates are simulated by appending the keys associated with the target tuples to operation logs. Such an append-only store architecture maximizes the processing throughput on incoming data, but potentially incurs higher costs during query processing, because additional computation is needed to generate consistent snapshots of the database. Indexing is the key to enable efficient query processing by fast data retrieval and aggregation under such a system architecture. This thesis presents a new in-memory indexing scheme for distributed append-only stores. Our new scheme utilizes traditional index structures based on B+ trees and their variants to create an efficient in-memory template-based tree without the overhead of expensive node splits. We also propose the use of optimized domain partitioning and multi-thread insertion techniques to exploit the advantages of the template B+ tree structure. Our empirical evaluations show that insertion throughput is five times higher with template B+ trees than with HBase, on a variety of real and synthetic workloads

    Adaptive Data Storage and Placement in Distributed Database Systems

    Distributed database systems are widely used to provide scalable storage, update and query facilities for application data. Distributed databases primarily use data replication and data partitioning to spread load across nodes or sites. The presence of hotspots in workloads, however, can result in imbalanced load on the distributed system resulting in performance degradation. Moreover, updates to partitioned and replicated data can require expensive distributed coordination to ensure that they are applied atomically and consistently. Additionally, data storage formats, such as row and columnar layouts, can significantly impact latencies of mixed transactional and analytical workloads. Consequently, how and where data is stored among the sites in a distributed database can significantly affect system performance, particularly if the workload is not known ahead of time. To address these concerns, this thesis proposes adaptive data placement and storage techniques for distributed database systems. This thesis demonstrates that the performance of distributed database systems can be improved by automatically adapting how and where data is stored by leveraging online workload information. A two-tiered architecture for adaptive distributed database systems is proposed that includes an adaptation advisor that decides at which site(s) and how transactions execute. The adaptation advisor makes these decisions based on submitted transactions. This design is used in three adaptive distributed database systems presented in this thesis: (i) DynaMast that efficiently transfers data mastership to guarantee single-site transactions while maintaining well-understood and established transactional semantics, (ii) MorphoSys that selectively and adaptively replicates, partitions and remasters data based on a learned cost model to improve transaction processing, and (iii) Proteus that uses learned workload models to predictively and adaptively change storage layouts to support both high transactional throughput and low latency analytical queries. Collectively, this thesis is a concrete step towards autonomous database systems that allow users to specify only the data to store and the queries to execute, leaving the system to judiciously choose the storage and execution mechanisms to deliver high performance

    Learning a Partitioning Advisor with Deep Reinforcement Learning

    Commercial data analytics products such as Microsoft Azure SQL Data Warehouse or Amazon Redshift provide ready-to-use scale-out database solutions for OLAP-style workloads in the cloud. While the provisioning of a database cluster is usually fully automated by cloud providers, customers typically still have to make important design decisions which were traditionally made by the database administrator such as selecting the partitioning schemes. In this paper we introduce a learned partitioning advisor for analytical OLAP-style workloads based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). The main idea is that a DRL agent learns its decisions based on experience by monitoring the rewards for different workloads and partitioning schemes. We evaluate our learned partitioning advisor in an experimental evaluation with different databases schemata and workloads of varying complexity. In the evaluation, we show that our advisor is not only able to find partitionings that outperform existing approaches for automated partitioning design but that it also can easily adjust to different deployments. This is especially important in cloud setups where customers can easily migrate their cluster to a new set of (virtual) machines

    Loom: Query-aware Partitioning of Online Graphs

    As with general graph processing systems, partitioning data over a cluster of machines improves the scalability of graph database management systems. However, these systems will incur additional network cost during the execution of a query workload, due to inter-partition traversals. Workload-agnostic partitioning algorithms typically minimise the likelihood of any edge crossing partition boundaries. However, these partitioners are sub-optimal with respect to many workloads, especially queries, which may require more frequent traversal of specific subsets of inter-partition edges. Furthermore, they largely unsuited to operating incrementally on dynamic, growing graphs. We present a new graph partitioning algorithm, Loom, that operates on a stream of graph updates and continuously allocates the new vertices and edges to partitions, taking into account a query workload of graph pattern expressions along with their relative frequencies. First we capture the most common patterns of edge traversals which occur when executing queries. We then compare sub-graphs, which present themselves incrementally in the graph update stream, against these common patterns. Finally we attempt to allocate each match to single partitions, reducing the number of inter-partition edges within frequently traversed sub-graphs and improving average query performance. Loom is extensively evaluated over several large test graphs with realistic query workloads and various orderings of the graph updates. We demonstrate that, given a workload, our prototype produces partitionings of significantly better quality than existing streaming graph partitioning algorithms Fennel and LDG
