Authentication of Students and Studentsâ Work in E-Learning : Report for the Development Bid of Academic Year 2010/11
Global e-learning market is projected to reach $107.3 billion by 2015 according to a new report by The Global Industry Analyst (Analyst 2010). The popularity and growth of the online programmes within the School of Computer Science obviously is in line with this projection. However, also on the rise are studentsâ dishonesty and cheating in the open and virtual environment of e-learning courses (Shepherd 2008). Institutions offering e-learning programmes are facing the challenges of deterring and detecting these misbehaviours by introducing security mechanisms to the current e-learning platforms. In particular, authenticating that a registered student indeed takes an online assessment, e.g., an exam or a coursework, is essential for the institutions to give the credit to the correct candidate. Authenticating a student is to ensure that a student is indeed who he says he is. Authenticating a studentâs work goes one step further to ensure that an authenticated student indeed does the submitted work himself. This report is to investigate and compare current possible techniques and solutions for authenticating distance learning student and/or their work remotely for the elearning programmes. The attractiveness of Internet banking, the dynamics and the integration with e-business is still growing. The current use of electronic banking is defined by cyberspace and abused in the form of cyber terrorism as well. Therefore it is in the interest of all banks to focus on minimizing the real attacks. This article analyzes and compares the current possibilities against so-called phishing and identifies the area of the safe use of Internet banking in terms of the current potential threats in this area
Body language, security and e-commerce
Security is becoming an increasingly more important concern both at the desktop level and at the network level. This article discusses several approaches to authenticating individuals through the use of biometric devices. While libraries might not implement such devices, they may appear in the near future of desktop computing, particularly for access to institutional computers or for access to sensitive information. Other approaches to computer security focus on protecting the contents of electronic transmissions and verification of individual users. After a brief overview of encryption technologies, the article examines public-key cryptography which is getting a lot of attention in the business world in what is called public key infrastructure. It also examines other efforts, such as IBMâs Cryptolope, the Secure Sockets Layer of Web browsers, and Digital Certificates and Signatures. Secure electronic transmissions are an important condition for conducting business on the Net. These business transactions are not limited to purchase orders, invoices, and contracts. This could become an important tool for information vendors and publishers to control access to the electronic resources they license. As license negotiators and contract administrators, librarians need to be aware of what is happening in these new technologies and the impact that will have on their operations

Cell phones are already prime targets for theft. The increasing functionality of cell phones is making them even more attractive. With the increase of cell phone functionality including personal digital assistance, banking, e-commerce, remote work, internet access and entertainment, more and more confidential data is stored on these devices. What is protecting this confidential data stored on cell phones? Studies have shown that even though most of the cell phone users are aware of the PIN security feature more than 50% of them are not using it either because of the lack of confidence in it or because of the inconvenience. Genetic Programming for Multibiometrics
Biometric systems suffer from some drawbacks: a biometric system can provide
in general good performances except with some individuals as its performance
depends highly on the quality of the capture. One solution to solve some of
these problems is to use multibiometrics where different biometric systems are
combined together (multiple captures of the same biometric modality, multiple
feature extraction algorithms, multiple biometric modalities...). In this
paper, we are interested in score level fusion functions application (i.e., we
use a multibiometric authentication scheme which accept or deny the claimant
for using an application). In the state of the art, the weighted sum of scores
(which is a linear classifier) and the use of an SVM (which is a non linear
classifier) provided by different biometric systems provide one of the best
performances. We present a new method based on the use of genetic programming
giving similar or better performances (depending on the complexity of the
database). We derive a score fusion function by assembling some classical
primitives functions (+, *, -, ...). We have validated the proposed method on
three significant biometric benchmark datasets from the state of the art
Strengthening e-banking security using keystroke dynamics
This paper investigates keystroke dynamics and its possible use as a tool to prevent or detect fraud in the banking industry. Given that banks are constantly on the lookout for improved methods to address the menace of fraud, the paper sets out to review keystroke dynamics, its advantages, disadvantages and potential for improving the security of e-banking systems. This paper evaluates keystroke dynamics suitability of use for enhancing security in the banking sector. Results from the literature review found that keystroke dynamics can offer impressive accuracy rates for user identification. Low costs of deployment and minimal change to users modus operandi make this technology an attractive investment for banks. The paper goes on to argue that although this behavioural biometric may not be suitable as a primary method of authentication, it can be used as a secondary or tertiary method to complement existing authentication systems
Development of CUiris: A Dark-Skinned African Iris Dataset for Enhancement of Image Analysis and Robust Personal Recognition
Iris recognition algorithms, especially with the
emergence of large-scale iris-based identification systems, must
be tested for speed and accuracy and evaluated with a wide
range of templates â large size, long-range, visible and different
origins. This paper presents the acquisition of eye-iris images
of dark-skinned subjects in Africa, a predominant case of verydark-
brown iris images, under near-infrared illumination. The
peculiarity of these iris images is highlighted from the
histogram and normal probability distribution of their
grayscale image entropy (GiE) values, in comparison to Asian
and Caucasian iris images. The acquisition of eye-images for
the African iris dataset is ongoing and will be made publiclyavailable
as soon as it is sufficiently populated
