Worldwide Use and Impact of the NASA Astrophysics Data System Digital Library
By combining data from the text, citation, and reference databases with data
from the ADS readership logs we have been able to create Second Order
Bibliometric Operators, a customizable class of collaborative filters which
permits substantially improved accuracy in literature queries.
Using the ADS usage logs along with membership statistics from the
International Astronomical Union and data on the population and gross domestic
product (GDP) we develop an accurate model for world-wide basic research where
the number of scientists in a country is proportional to the GDP of that
country, and the amount of basic research done by a country is proportional to
the number of scientists in that country times that country's per capita GDP.
We introduce the concept of utility time to measure the impact of the
ADS/URANIA and the electronic astronomical library on astronomical research. We
find that in 2002 it amounted to the equivalent of 736 FTE researchers, or $250
Million, or the astronomical research done in France.

Usage History of Scientific Literature: Nature Metrics and Metrics of Nature Publications
In this study, we analyze the dynamic usage history of Nature publications
over time using Nature metrics data. We conduct analysis from two perspectives.
On the one hand, we examine how long it takes before the articles' downloads
reach 50%/80% of the total; on the other hand, we compare the percentage of
total downloads in 7 days, 30 days, and 100 days after publication. In general,
papers are downloaded most frequently within a short time period right after
their publication. And we find that compared with Non-Open Access papers,
readers' attention on Open Access publications are more enduring. Based on the
usage data of a newly published paper, regression analysis could predict the
future expected total usage counts.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures and 4 table
Achieving information fulfilment in the networked society: part 1: introducing new concepts
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce the idea of information fulfilment. The networked society provides many opportunities for information flow. However, information professionals readily accept that, although one is surrounded by information of many sorts, in many formats, what is important is whether users consider that they ever achieve what is known as “Information Fulfilment”. i.e. occurrences when there has been information which is accurate, timely, current and presented in an appropriate and useful format to allow (work) tasks to be completed.
Design/methodology/approach – This first paper contains a literature review which informed the study. The study (which will be reported in detail in a later paper) was interpretive and used ethnography (through participant observation) as the research tool. The research deals with issues surrounding organisation structures and examines levels of information fulfilment in micro substantive settings.
Findings – The paper serves to introduce background and cultural information from a small section of a larger European research project which involved five countries and was partially funded by TEMPUS and Leonardo da Vinci Socrates grants.
Research limitations/implications – The paper introduces ideas concerning information fulfilment and addresses initial issues concerning a small section of results from a larger project. Phase 2 is now under way and more studies are planned. It is noted that organisation structures are only one variable that affects levels of information fulfilment and there are plans in the future to further extend the study.
Originality/value – The research attempts to link the levels of information fulfilment with types of organisation structures. This paper introduces the concept and gives the rationale for the project
An analysis of the use of graphics for information retrieval
Several research groups have addressed the problem of retrieving vector graphics. This work has, however, focused either on domain-dependent areas or was based on very simple graphics languages. Here we take a fresh look at the issue of graphics retrieval in general and in particular at the tasks which retrieval systems must support. The paper presents a series of case studies which explored the needs of professionals in the hope that these needs can help direct future graphics IR research. Suggested modelling techniques for some of the graphic collections are also presented
Interactive Search and Exploration in Online Discussion Forums Using Multimodal Embeddings
In this paper we present a novel interactive multimodal learning system,
which facilitates search and exploration in large networks of social multimedia
users. It allows the analyst to identify and select users of interest, and to
find similar users in an interactive learning setting. Our approach is based on
novel multimodal representations of users, words and concepts, which we
simultaneously learn by deploying a general-purpose neural embedding model. We
show these representations to be useful not only for categorizing users, but
also for automatically generating user and community profiles. Inspired by
traditional summarization approaches, we create the profiles by selecting
diverse and representative content from all available modalities, i.e. the
text, image and user modality. The usefulness of the approach is evaluated
using artificial actors, which simulate user behavior in a relevance feedback
scenario. Multiple experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the quality
of our multimodal representations, to compare different embedding strategies,
and to determine the importance of different modalities. We demonstrate the
capabilities of the proposed approach on two different multimedia collections
originating from the violent online extremism forum Stormfront and the
microblogging platform Twitter, which are particularly interesting due to the
high semantic level of the discussions they feature

Collaborative yet independent: Information practices in the physical sciences
In many ways, the physical sciences are at the forefront of using digital tools and methods to work with information and data. However, the fields and disciplines that make up the physical sciences are by no means uniform, and physical scientists find, use, and disseminate information in a variety of ways. This report examines information practices in the physical sciences across seven cases, and demonstrates the richly varied ways in which physical scientists work, collaborate, and share information and data.
This report details seven case studies in the physical sciences. For each case, qualitative interviews and focus groups were used to understand the domain. Quantitative data gathered from a survey of participants highlights different information strategies employed across the cases, and identifies important software used for research.
Finally, conclusions from across the cases are drawn, and recommendations are made. This report is the third in a series commissioned by the Research Information Network (RIN), each looking at information practices in a specific domain (life sciences, humanities, and physical sciences). The aim is to understand how researchers within a range of disciplines find and use information, and in particular how that has changed with the introduction of new technologies
