A low-speed BIST framework for high-performance circuit testing
Testing of high performance integrated circuits is becoming increasingly a challenging task owing to high clock frequencies. Often testers are not able to test such devices due to their limited high frequency capabilities. In this article we outline a design-for-test methodology such that high performance devices can be tested on relatively low performance testers. Automated Synthesis of SEU Tolerant Architectures from OO Descriptions
SEU faults are a well-known problem in aerospace environment but recently their relevance grew up also at ground level in commodity applications coupled, in this frame, with strong economic constraints in terms of costs reduction. On the other hand, latest hardware description languages and synthesis tools allow reducing the boundary between software and hardware domains making the high-level descriptions of hardware components very similar to software programs. Moving from these considerations, the present paper analyses the possibility of reusing Software Implemented Hardware Fault Tolerance (SIHFT) techniques, typically exploited in micro-processor based systems, to design SEU tolerant architectures. The main characteristics of SIHFT techniques have been examined as well as how they have to be modified to be compatible with the synthesis flow. A complete environment is provided to automate the design instrumentation using the proposed techniques, and to perform fault injection experiments both at behavioural and gate level. Preliminary results presented in this paper show the effectiveness of the approach in terms of reliability improvement and reduced design effort
Particle Swarm Optimization Framework for Low Power Testing of VLSI Circuits
Power dissipation in sequential circuits is due to increased toggling count
of Circuit under Test, which depends upon test vectors applied. If successive
test vectors sequences have more toggling nature then it is sure that toggling
rate of flip flops is higher. Higher toggling for flip flops results more power
dissipation. To overcome this problem, one method is to use GA to have test
vectors of high fault coverage in short interval, followed by Hamming distance
management on test patterns. This approach is time consuming and needs more
efforts. Another method which is purposed in this paper is a PSO based Frame
Work to optimize power dissipation. Here target is to set the entire test
vector in a frame for time period 'T', so that the frame consists of all those
vectors strings which not only provide high fault coverage but also arrange
vectors in frame to produce minimum toggling
Liquid State Machine with Dendritically Enhanced Readout for Low-power, Neuromorphic VLSI Implementations
In this paper, we describe a new neuro-inspired, hardware-friendly readout
stage for the liquid state machine (LSM), a popular model for reservoir
computing. Compared to the parallel perceptron architecture trained by the
p-delta algorithm, which is the state of the art in terms of performance of
readout stages, our readout architecture and learning algorithm can attain
better performance with significantly less synaptic resources making it
attractive for VLSI implementation. Inspired by the nonlinear properties of
dendrites in biological neurons, our readout stage incorporates neurons having
multiple dendrites with a lumped nonlinearity. The number of synaptic
connections on each branch is significantly lower than the total number of
connections from the liquid neurons and the learning algorithm tries to find
the best 'combination' of input connections on each branch to reduce the error.
Hence, the learning involves network rewiring (NRW) of the readout network
similar to structural plasticity observed in its biological counterparts. We
show that compared to a single perceptron using analog weights, this
architecture for the readout can attain, even by using the same number of
binary valued synapses, up to 3.3 times less error for a two-class spike train
classification problem and 2.4 times less error for an input rate approximation
task. Even with 60 times larger synapses, a group of 60 parallel perceptrons
cannot attain the performance of the proposed dendritically enhanced readout.
An additional advantage of this method for hardware implementations is that the
'choice' of connectivity can be easily implemented exploiting address event
representation (AER) protocols commonly used in current neuromorphic systems
where the connection matrix is stored in memory. Also, due to the use of binary

A VLSI implementation of the collision avoidance switch protocol for CAMB tree LANs
To solve a performance bottle neck in random access LANs due to packet collisions and their resolution, collision avoidance switches are introduced. These switches allow random access protocols to achieve high performance by resolving collisions among packets. A conventional hardware implementation of these switches is the use of TTL chips. In this implementation; a handful of TTL chips are required to forma single switch (e.g., 18 TTL chips are needed for an implementation of the CAMB switch [7]). Thus, implementation of a complete network, which requires several of these switches, could very well result in a large and complex hardware system.Today's modern chip technology allows us to pack large quantity of logic in a single chip. By transferring the conventional implementation of the collision avoidance switches into a VLSI chip, the complexity of the resultant hardware is greatly reduced, not to mention the improvement in hardware performance and ease of packaging.This report provides an overall study of the collision avoidance protocols for the tree LANs with emphasis on the implementation of collision avoidance switches. Hardware implementations of sorne of these switches are discussed. And a VLSI implementation of the CAMB switch protocol is introduced
Optimizing construction of scheduled data flow graph for on-line testability
The objective of this work is to develop a new methodology for behavioural synthesis using a flow of synthesis, better suited to the scheduling of independent calculations and non-concurrent online testing. The traditional behavioural synthesis process can be defined as the compilation of an algorithmic specification into an architecture composed of a data path and a controller. This stream of synthesis generally involves scheduling, resource allocation, generation of the data path and controller synthesis. Experiments showed that optimization started at the high level synthesis improves the performance of the result, yet the current tools do not offer synthesis optimizations that from the RTL level. This justifies the development of an optimization methodology which takes effect from the behavioural specification and accompanying the synthesis process in its various stages. In this paper we propose the use of algebraic properties (commutativity, associativity and distributivity) to transform readable mathematical formulas of algorithmic specifications into mathematical formulas evaluated efficiently. This will effectively reduce the execution time of scheduling calculations and increase the possibilities of testability
