    TCMS operations and maintenance philosophy

    The purpose is to describe the basic philosophies of operating and maintaining the Test, Control, and Monitor System (TCMS) equipment. TCMS is a complex and sophisticated checkout system. Operations and maintenance processes developed to support it will be based upon current experience, but will be focused on the specific needs of TCMS in support of Space Station Freedom Program (SSFP) and related activities. An overview of the operations and maintenance goals and philosophies are presented. The assumptions, roles and responsibilities, concepts and interfaces for operation, on-line maintenance, off-line support, and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) personnel training on all TCMS equipment located at KSC are described

    Incentive Pay Systems and the Management of Human Resources in France and Great Britain

    Incentive pay systems have undergone major changes in recent decades. This paper investigates use of incentive pay systems in British and French private sector establishments in 2004, focusing on payment-by-results, merit pay, and profit sharing, using British and French workplace surveys: WERS and Réponse. Despite the stereotypes of Britain as a deregulated economy and France as a more coordinated social-market economy, French firms make considerably greater use of incentive pay, and particularly, merit pay. The paper explores the organisational and institutional determinants of this. It finds that personnel economics and management theories explain a significant share of the within country variation in use of incentive pay systems.incentive systems, merit pay, profit-sharing, employer organisation

    Adapting a HEP Application for Running on the Grid

    The goal of the EU IST int.eu.grid project is to build middleware facilities which enable the execution of real-time and interactive applications on the Grid. Within this research, relevant support for the HEP application is provided by Virtual Organization, monitoring system, and real-time dispatcher (RTD). These facilities realize the pilot jobs idea that allows to allocate grid resources in advance and to analyze events in real time. In the paper we present HEP Virtual Organization, the details of monitoring, and RTD. We present the way of running the HEP application using the above facilities to fit into the real-time application requirements

    Project pathogens: The anatomy of omission errors in construction and resource engineering project

    Construction and engineering projects are typically complex in nature and are prone to cost and schedule overruns. A significant factor that often contributes to these overruns is rework. Omissions errors, in particular, have been found to account for as much as 38% of the total rework costs experienced. To date, there has been limited research that has sought to determine the underlying factors that contribute to omission errors in construction and engineering projects. Using data derived from59 in-depth interviews undertaken with various project participants, a generic systemic causal model of the key factors that contributed to omission errors is presented. The developed causal model can improve understanding of the archetypal nature and underlying dynamics of omission errors. Error management strategies that can be considered for implementation in projects are also discussed

    Determination of Creatinine in Human Urine with Flow Injection Tandem Mass Spectrometry

    Background/Aims: Excretion of urinary compounds in spot urine is often estimated relative to creatinine. For the growing number of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assays of urine-excreted molecules, a fast and accurate method for determination of creatinine is needed. Methods: A high-throughput flow injection tandem mass spectrometry method for exact quantitation of creatinine in urine has been developed and validated. Sample preparation used only two-step dilution for protein precipitation and matrix dilution. Flow injection analysis without chromatographic separation allowed for total run times of 1 min per sample. Creatinine concentrations were quantitated using stable isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry. Selectivity and coelution-free quantitation were assured by qualifier ion monitoring. Results: Method validation revealed excellent injection repeatability of 1.0% coefficient of variation (CV), intraday precision of 1.2% CV and interday precision of 2.4% CV. Accuracy determined from standard addition experiments was 106.1 +/- 3.8%. The linear calibration range was adapted to physiological creatinine concentrations. Comparison of quantitation results with a routinely used method (Jaffe colorimetric assay) proved high agreement (R-2 = 0.9102). Conclusions: The new method is a valuable addition to the toolbox of LC-MS/MS laboratories where excretion of urinary compounds is studied. The `dilute and shoot' approach to isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry makes the new method highly accurate as well as cost-and time-efficient. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Base
