iTeleScope: Intelligent Video Telemetry and Classification in Real-Time using Software Defined Networking
Video continues to dominate network traffic, yet operators today have poor
visibility into the number, duration, and resolutions of the video streams
traversing their domain. Current approaches are inaccurate, expensive, or
unscalable, as they rely on statistical sampling, middle-box hardware, or
packet inspection software. We present {\em iTelescope}, the first intelligent,
inexpensive, and scalable SDN-based solution for identifying and classifying
video flows in real-time. Our solution is novel in combining dynamic flow rules
with telemetry and machine learning, and is built on commodity OpenFlow
switches and open-source software. We develop a fully functional system, train
it in the lab using multiple machine learning algorithms, and validate its
performance to show over 95\% accuracy in identifying and classifying video
streams from many providers including Youtube and Netflix. Lastly, we conduct
tests to demonstrate its scalability to tens of thousands of concurrent
streams, and deploy it live on a campus network serving several hundred real
users. Our system gives unprecedented fine-grained real-time visibility of
video streaming performance to operators of enterprise and carrier networks at

Characterization of ISP Traffic: Trends, User Habits, and Access Technology Impact
In the recent years, the research community has increased its focus on network monitoring which is seen as a key tool to understand the Internet and the Internet users. Several studies have presented a deep characterization of a particular application, or a particular network, considering the point of view of either the ISP, or the Internet user. In this paper, we take a different perspective. We focus on three European countries where we have been collecting traffic for more than a year and a half through 5 vantage points with different access technologies. This humongous amount of information allows us not only to provide precise, multiple, and quantitative measurements of "What the user do with the Internet" in each country but also to identify common/uncommon patterns and habits across different countries and nations. Considering different time scales, we start presenting the trend of application popularity; then we focus our attention to a one-month long period, and further drill into a typical daily characterization of users activity. Results depict an evolving scenario due to the consolidation of new services as Video Streaming and File Hosting and to the adoption of new P2P technologies. A Utility-based QoS Model for Emerging Multimedia Applications
Existing network QoS models do not sufficiently reflect the challenges faced by high-throughput, always-on, inelastic multimedia applications. In this paper, a utility-based QoS model is proposed as a user layer extension to existing communication QoS models to better assess the requirements of multimedia applications and manage the QoS provisioning of multimedia flows. Network impairment utility functions are derived from user experiments and combined to application utility functions to evaluate the application quality. Service Platform for Converged Interactive Broadband Broadcast and Cellular Wireless
A converged broadcast and telecommunication
service platform is presented that is able to create, deliver, and
manage interactive, multimedia content and services for consumption
on three different terminal types. The motivations of
service providers for designing converged interactive multimedia
services, which are crafted for their individual requirements, are
investigated. The overall design of the system is presented with
particular emphasis placed on the operational features of each
of the sub-systems, the flows of media and metadata through the
sub-systems and the formats and protocols required for inter-communication
between them. The key features of tools required for
creating converged interactive multimedia content for a range of
different end-user terminal types are examined. Finally possible
enhancements to this system are discussed. This study is of particular
interest to those organizations currently conducting trials
and commercial launches of DVB-H services because it provides
them with an insight of the various additional functions required
in the service provisioning platforms to provide fully interactive
services to a range of different mobile terminal types
