Using XDAQ in Application Scenarios of the CMS Experiment
XDAQ is a generic data acquisition software environment that emerged from a
rich set of of use-cases encountered in the CMS experiment. They cover not the
deployment for multiple sub-detectors and the operation of different processing
and networking equipment as well as a distributed collaboration of users with
different needs. The use of the software in various application scenarios
demonstrated the viability of the approach. We discuss two applications, the
tracker local DAQ system for front-end commissioning and the muon chamber

The approach used to define the design is described. Major activities performed during the product development cycle are identified. The computer system requirements necessary to support the design process are given as computational requirements of the host system, technical program elements and system features. The IPAD computer system design is presented as concepts, a functional description and an organizational diagram of its major components. Identifying common problems in the acquisition and deployment of large-scale software projects in the US and UK healthcare systems
Public and private organizations are investing increasing amounts into the development of
healthcare information technology. These applications are perceived to offer numerous benefits.
Software systems can improve the exchange of information between healthcare facilities. They
support standardised procedures that can help to increase consistency between different service
providers. Electronic patient records ensure minimum standards across the trajectory of care when
patients move between different specializations. Healthcare information systems also offer economic
benefits through efficiency savings; for example by providing the data that helps to identify potential
bottlenecks in the provision and administration of care. However, a number of high-profile failures
reveal the problems that arise when staff must cope with the loss of these applications. In particular,
teams have to retrieve paper based records that often lack the detail on electronic systems.
Individuals who have only used electronic information systems face particular problems in learning
how to apply paper-based fallbacks. The following pages compare two different failures of
Healthcare Information Systems in the UK and North America. The intention is to ensure that future
initiatives to extend the integration of electronic patient records will build on the ‘lessons learned’
from previous systems
Silver-based Microbial Check Valve for Spacecraft Potable Water Systems
As human space exploration increases, the development of a more efficient potable water treatment system suited for spacecraft becomes crucial. This Waste-management Education Research Consortium (WERC) challenge was designed to explore the viability of microbial control through the utilization of silver ions as a biocide for possible integration into the Tranquility Node 3 water purification system aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Current systems using iodine risk causing hyperthyroidism from overexposure; however, silver can be safely ingested without this side effect. After researching silver delivery methods including electrochemical ion production, controlled release, or a combination of the two, our team decided to design a controlled release system capable of meeting the constraints listed in the problem statement. By using a membrane similar to those within dialysis devices a system was designed to deliver silver ions to a stream of water that requires arguably no power and is exceptionally lightweight. While the silver delivery system fulfilled the constraints of the WERC problem statement, our team also examined the use of resins like those contained in the current Microbial Check Valve (MCV). Resin substitutes capable of selective silver sorption are recommended as replacements for those within the current MCV to prevent backwards microbial diffusion through the system. Multiple designs will be presented in this paper. First, our membrane-controlled release silver delivery system (SDS) is presented to specifically address the WERC Task 1 deliverables. Second, a proposed upgrade to the ISS water system is described that replaces the ion exchange resin beds with silver-selective media prevent microbial contamination of water in the potable water system of the spacecraft. Given the extreme lightweight nature of the SDS, nil power requirement, and minor modification to the existing system, Hogs In Space has delivered a highly effective method to deliver and control silver based on the WERC Task 1 requirements

Development and evaluation of a fault-tolerant multiprocessor (FTMP) computer. Volume 4: FTMP executive summary
The FTMP architecture is a high reliability computer concept modeled after a homogeneous multiprocessor architecture. Elements of the FTMP are operated in tight synchronism with one another and hardware fault-detection and fault-masking is provided which is transparent to the software. Operating system design and user software design is thus greatly simplified. Performance of the FTMP is also comparable to that of a simplex equivalent due to the efficiency of fault handling hardware. The FTMP project constructed an engineering module of the FTMP, programmed the machine and extensively tested the architecture through fault injection and other stress testing. This testing confirmed the soundness of the FTMP concepts
Computer graphics application in the engineering design integration system
The computer graphics aspect of the Engineering Design Integration (EDIN) system and its application to design problems were discussed. Three basic types of computer graphics may be used with the EDIN system for the evaluation of aerospace vehicles preliminary designs: offline graphics systems using vellum-inking or photographic processes, online graphics systems characterized by direct coupled low cost storage tube terminals with limited interactive capabilities, and a minicomputer based refresh terminal offering highly interactive capabilities. The offline line systems are characterized by high quality (resolution better than 0.254 mm) and slow turnaround (one to four days). The online systems are characterized by low cost, instant visualization of the computer results, slow line speed (300 BAUD), poor hard copy, and the early limitations on vector graphic input capabilities. Planning and Resource Management in an Intelligent Automated Power Management System
Power system management is a process of guiding a power system towards the objective of continuous supply of electrical power to a set of loads. Spacecraft power system management requires planning and scheduling, since electrical power is a scarce resource in space. The automation of power system management for future spacecraft has been recognized as an important R&D goal. Several automation technologies have emerged including the use of expert systems for automating human problem solving capabilities such as rule based expert system for fault diagnosis and load scheduling. It is questionable whether current generation expert system technology is applicable for power system management in space. The objective of the ADEPTS (ADvanced Electrical Power management Techniques for Space systems) is to study new techniques for power management automation. These techniques involve integrating current expert system technology with that of parallel and distributed computing, as well as a distributed, object-oriented approach to software design. The focus of the current study is the integration of new procedures for automatically planning and scheduling loads with procedures for performing fault diagnosis and control. The objective is the concurrent execution of both sets of tasks on separate transputer processors, thus adding parallelism to the overall management process

Energy Information Systems: From the Basement to the Boardroom
A significant buildings energy reduction opportunity exists in the office sector, given that this market segment typically is an early adopter of new technology. There is a rising trend towards smart and connected offices through the internet of things (IoT) that provides new opportunities for operational efficiency and environmental sustainability practices. Leading commercial real estate companies have begun to shift from individual building automation systems (BAS) to partially integrated and automated systems such as energy information systems (EIS). In both the United States and India, organizations are seeking operational excellence, enhanced tenant relationships, and topline growth. Hence it is imperative to engage the executives with decision-making power, by tapping into their interest in sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and innovation. This expansion of interest can enable data-driven decisions, strong energy investments, and deeper energy benefits, and would drive innovation in this field. However, none of this would be possible without robust, consistent building energy information to provide visibility across all the levels of decision making, i.e. from the basement where the facilities staff take operational action to the boardroom where the executives make investment decisions.
Price, security, and ease of use remain barriers to the adoption and pervasive use of promising EIS technologies in commercial office buildings. We believe that these barriers can be addressed through the development of ready, simplified, consistent, commercially available, low-cost EIS-in-a-box packages, that have a pre-defined set of hardware components and software features and functionality that are pertinent to a particular building sector. These simplified, sector-specific EIS packages can help to obviate the need for customization, and enhance ease of use, thereby enabling scale-up, in order to facilitate building energy savings. The EIS-in-a-box are adaptable in both U.S. and Indian office buildings, and potentially beyond these two countries
