A multiple-choice knapsack based algorithm for CDMA downlink rate differentiation under uplink coverage restrictions

    Get PDF
This paper presents an analytical model for downlink rate allocation in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile networks. By discretizing the coverage area into small segments, the transmit power requirements are characterized via a matrix representation that separates user and system characteristics. We obtain a closed-form analytical expression for the so-called Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of that matrix, which provides a quick assessment of the feasibility of the power assignment for a given downlink rate allocation. Based on the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue, we reduce the downlink rate allocation problem to a set of multiple-choice knapsack problems. The solution of these problems provides an approximation of the optimal downlink rate allocation and cell borders for which the system throughput, expressed in terms of downlink rates, is maximized. \u

Genetically Enhanced Performance of a UTRA-like Time-Division Duplex CDMA Network

In this contribution a Dynamic Channel Allocation (DCA) algorithm is developed, which minimizes the amount of Multi-User Interference (MUI) experienced at the Base Stations (BSs) by employing Genetic Algorithms (GAs). A GA is utilized for finding a suboptimum, but highly beneficial Uplink (UL) or Downlink (DL) Timeslot (TS) allocation for improving the achievable performance of the third generation UTRA system’s Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode. It is demonstrated that a GA-assisted UL/DL timeslot scheduling scheme may avoid the severe BS to BS inter-cell interference potentially inflicted by the UTRA TDD CDMA air interface owing to allowing all TSs to be used both in the UL and D

System modeling and performance evaluation of rate allocation schemes for packet data services in wideband CDMA systems

    Get PDF
To fully exploit the potential of a wideband CDMA-based mobile Internet computing system, an efficient algorithm is needed for judiciously performing rate allocation, so as to orchestrate and allocate bandwidth for voice services and high data rate applications. However, in existing standards (e.g., cdma2000), only a first-come-first-served equal sharing allocation algorithm is used, potentially leading to a low bandwidth utilization and inadequate support of high data rate multimedia mobile applications (e.g., video/audio files swapping, multimedia messaging services, etc.). In this paper, we first analytically model the rate allocation problem that captures realistic system constraints such as downlink power limits and control, uplink Interference effects, physical channel adaptation, and soft handoff. We then suggest six efficient rate allocation schemes that are designed based on different philosophies: rate optimal, fairness-based, and user-oriented. Simulations are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the rate allocation schemes using realistic system parameters In our model.published_or_final_versio

Soft handover issues in radio resource management for 3G WCDMA networks

PhDMobile terminals allow users to access services while on the move. This unique feature has driven the rapid growth in the mobile network industry, changing it from a new technology into a massive industry within less than two decades. Handover is the essential functionality for dealing with the mobility of the mobile users. Compared with the conventional hard handover employed in the GSM mobile networks, the soft handover used in IS-95 and being proposed for 3G has better performance on both link and system level. Previous work on soft handover has led to several algorithms being proposed and extensive research has been conducted on the performance analysis and parameters optimisation of these algorithms. Most of the previous analysis focused on the uplink direction. However, in future mobile networks, the downlink is more likely to be the bottleneck of the system capacity because of the asymmetric nature of new services, such as Internet traffic. In this thesis, an in-depth study of the soft handover effects on the downlink direction of WCDMA networks is carried out, leading to a new method of optimising soft handover for maximising the downlink capacity and a new power control approach

Characterizing CDMA downlink feasibility via effective interference

    Get PDF
This paper models and analyses downlink power assignment feasibility in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile networks. By discretizing the area into small segments, the power requirements are characterized via a matrix representation that separates user and system characteristics. We obtain a closed-form analytical expression of the so-called Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of that matrix, which provides a quick assessment of the feasibility of the power assignment for each distribution of calls over the segments. Although the obtained relation is non-linear, it basically provides an effective interference characterisation of downlink feasibility. Our results allow for a fast evaluation of outage and blocking probabilities, and enable a quick evaluation of feasibility that may be used for Call Acceptance Control. \u
