    On the Performance of Games using Solid State Drives

    Abstract-Since games typically demand considerable computer resources, game players will often purchase new technologies to improve their game performance. One such technology is the solid state drive (SSD) with the potential to provide significantly better performance than the traditional hard disk drive (HDD). However, while the benefits of SSDs to drive access speeds can be demonstrated, the benefits to computer game performance is largely unknown. This paper presents a detailed study comparing the performance of SSDs to HDDs for several popular computer games. Initial experiments provide read access speeds on both a desktop PC and a laptop to provide a baseline for SSD and HDD comparison. Then, detailed experiments are run for three computer games, Civilization IV, Portal 2, and Torchlight, covering a range of disk activity types. Analysis of the results shows SSDs compared with HDDs provide a 25% improvement to game boot times and game start times, but no significant improvement to game save times

    Strategic Behavior across Gender: A Comparison of Female and Male Expert Chess Players

    This paper aims to measure differences in risk behavior among expert chess players. The study employs a panel data set on international chess with 1.4 million games recorded over a period of 11 years. The structure of the data set allows us to use individual fixed-effect estimations to control for aspects such as innate ability as well as other characteristics of the players. Most notably, the data contains an objective measure of individual playing strength, the so-called Elo rating. In line with previous research, we find that women are more risk-averse than men. A novel finding is that males choose more aggressive strategies when playing against female opponents even though such strategies reduce their winning probability.culture, gender, competitiveness, risk aversion, mixed-sex competition

    Play and Learn: Using Video Games to Train Computer Vision Models

    Video games are a compelling source of annotated data as they can readily provide fine-grained groundtruth for diverse tasks. However, it is not clear whether the synthetically generated data has enough resemblance to the real-world images to improve the performance of computer vision models in practice. We present experiments assessing the effectiveness on real-world data of systems trained on synthetic RGB images that are extracted from a video game. We collected over 60000 synthetic samples from a modern video game with similar conditions to the real-world CamVid and Cityscapes datasets. We provide several experiments to demonstrate that the synthetically generated RGB images can be used to improve the performance of deep neural networks on both image segmentation and depth estimation. These results show that a convolutional network trained on synthetic data achieves a similar test error to a network that is trained on real-world data for dense image classification. Furthermore, the synthetically generated RGB images can provide similar or better results compared to the real-world datasets if a simple domain adaptation technique is applied. Our results suggest that collaboration with game developers for an accessible interface to gather data is potentially a fruitful direction for future work in computer vision.Comment: To appear in the British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC), September 2016. -v2: fixed a typo in the reference

    Creating gameplay mechanics with deformable characters

    This paper presents how soft body simulation can create deformable characters and physics-based game mechanics that result in a more varied gameplay experience. A framework was implemented that allows the creation of a fully deformable soft body character within a games application where the simulation model properties could be altered at runtime to create gameplay mechanics based on varying the deformation of the character. The simulation model was augmented to allow appropriate methods of player control that complemented the character design and its ability to deform. It was found that while the implementation of deformation-based mechanics created a more varied gameplay experience, the underlying simulation model allowed for a limited amount of deformation before becoming unstable. The ffectiveness of the framework is demonstrated by the resulting mechanics that are not possible through the use of previous methods
