AI for the Common Good?! Pitfalls, challenges, and Ethics Pen-Testing
Recently, many AI researchers and practitioners have embarked on research
visions that involve doing AI for "Good". This is part of a general drive
towards infusing AI research and practice with ethical thinking. One frequent
theme in current ethical guidelines is the requirement that AI be good for all,
or: contribute to the Common Good. But what is the Common Good, and is it
enough to want to be good? Via four lead questions, I will illustrate
challenges and pitfalls when determining, from an AI point of view, what the
Common Good is and how it can be enhanced by AI. The questions are: What is the
problem / What is a problem?, Who defines the problem?, What is the role of
knowledge?, and What are important side effects and dynamics? The illustration
will use an example from the domain of "AI for Social Good", more specifically
"Data Science for Social Good". Even if the importance of these questions may
be known at an abstract level, they do not get asked sufficiently in practice,
as shown by an exploratory study of 99 contributions to recent conferences in
the field. Turning these challenges and pitfalls into a positive
recommendation, as a conclusion I will draw on another characteristic of
computer-science thinking and practice to make these impediments visible and
attenuate them: "attacks" as a method for improving design. This results in the
proposal of ethics pen-testing as a method for helping AI designs to better

Research Priorities for Robust and Beneficial Artificial Intelligence
Success in the quest for artificial intelligence has the potential to bring
unprecedented benefits to humanity, and it is therefore worthwhile to
investigate how to maximize these benefits while avoiding potential pitfalls.

Make Way for the Robots! Human‑ and Machine‑Centricity in Constituting a European Public–Private Partnership
This article is an analytic register of recent European efforts in the making of ‘autonomous’ robots to address what is imagined as Europe’s societal challenges. The paper describes how an emerging techno-epistemic network stretches across industry, science, policy and law to legitimize and enact a robotics innovation agenda. Roadmap is the main metaphor and organizing tool in working across the disciplines and sectors, and in aligning these heterogeneous actors with a machine-centric vision along a path to make way for ‘new kinds’ of robots. We describe what happens as this industry-dominated project docks in a public–private partnership with pan-European institutions and a legislative initiative on robolaw. Emphasizing the co-production of robotics and European innovation politics, we observe how well-known uncertainties and scholarly debates about machine capabilities and human–machine configurations, are unexpectedly played out in legal scholarship and institutions as a controversy and a significant problem for human-centered legal frameworks. European robotics are indeed driving an increase in speculative ethics and a new-found weight of possible futures in legislative practice.publishedVersio

Technology and Caregiving: Emerging Interventions and Directions for Research.
An array of technology-based interventions has increasingly become available to support family caregivers, primarily focusing on health and well-being, social isolation, financial, and psychological support. More recently the emergence of new technologies such as mobile and cloud, robotics, connected sensors, virtual/augmented/mixed reality, voice, and the evermore ubiquitous tools supported by advanced data analytics, coupled with the integration of multiple technologies through platform solutions, have opened a new era of technology-enabled interventions that can empower and support family caregivers. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for identifying and addressing the challenges that may need to be overcome to effectively apply technology-enabled solutions for family caregivers. The paper identifies a number of challenges that either moderate or mediate the full use of technologies for the benefit of caregivers. The challenges include issues related to equity, inclusion, and access; ethical concerns related to privacy and security; political and regulatory factors affecting interoperability and lack of standards; inclusive/human-centric design and issues; and inherent economic and distribution channel difficulties. Technology, governance, and a sustainability model for small and medium-sized towns in Europe
New and cutting-edge technologies causing deep changes in societies, playing the role
of game modifiers, and having a significant impact on global markets in small and medium-sized
towns in Europe (SMSTEs) are the focus of this research. In this context, an analysis was carried
out to identify the main dimensions of a model for promoting innovation in SMSTEs. The literature
review on the main dimensions boosting the innovation in SMSTEs and the methodological approach
was the application of a survey directed to experts on this issue. The findings from the literature
review reflect that technologies, governance, and sustainability dimensions are enablers of SMSTEs’
innovation, and based on the results of the survey, a model was implemented to boost innovation,
