Nonlinearity Mitigation in WDM Systems: Models, Strategies, and Achievable Rates
After reviewing models and mitigation strategies for interchannel nonlinear
interference (NLI), we focus on the frequency-resolved logarithmic perturbation
model to study the coherence properties of NLI. Based on this study, we devise
an NLI mitigation strategy which exploits the synergic effect of phase and
polarization noise compensation (PPN) and subcarrier multiplexing with
symbol-rate optimization. This synergy persists even for high-order modulation
alphabets and Gaussian symbols. A particle method for the computation of the
resulting achievable information rate and spectral efficiency (SE) is presented
and employed to lower-bound the channel capacity. The dependence of the SE on
the link length, amplifier spacing, and presence or absence of inline
dispersion compensation is studied. Single-polarization and dual-polarization
scenarios with either independent or joint processing of the two polarizations
are considered. Numerical results show that, in links with ideal distributed
amplification, an SE gain of about 1 bit/s/Hz/polarization can be obtained (or,
in alternative, the system reach can be doubled at a given SE) with respect to
single-carrier systems without PPN mitigation. The gain is lower with lumped
amplification, increases with the number of spans, decreases with the span
length, and is further reduced by in-line dispersion compensation. For
instance, considering a dispersion-unmanaged link with lumped amplification and
an amplifier spacing of 60 km, the SE after 80 spans can be be increased from
4.5 to 4.8 bit/s/Hz/polarization, or the reach raised up to 100 spans (+25%)

Delay Performance of MISO Wireless Communications
Ultra-reliable, low latency communications (URLLC) are currently attracting
significant attention due to the emergence of mission-critical applications and
device-centric communication. URLLC will entail a fundamental paradigm shift
from throughput-oriented system design towards holistic designs for guaranteed
and reliable end-to-end latency. A deep understanding of the delay performance
of wireless networks is essential for efficient URLLC systems. In this paper,
we investigate the network layer performance of multiple-input, single-output
(MISO) systems under statistical delay constraints. We provide closed-form
expressions for MISO diversity-oriented service process and derive
probabilistic delay bounds using tools from stochastic network calculus. In
particular, we analyze transmit beamforming with perfect and imperfect channel
knowledge and compare it with orthogonal space-time codes and antenna
selection. The effect of transmit power, number of antennas, and finite
blocklength channel coding on the delay distribution is also investigated. Our
higher layer performance results reveal key insights of MISO channels and
provide useful guidelines for the design of ultra-reliable communication
systems that can guarantee the stringent URLLC latency requirements.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.

Candidate proof mass actuator control laws for the vibration suppression of a frame
The vibration of an experimental flexible space truss is controlled with internal control forces produced by several proof mass actuators. Four candidate control law strategies are evaluated in terms of performance and robustness. These control laws are experimentally implemented on a quasi free-free planar truss. Sensor and actuator dynamics are included in the model such that the final closed loop is self-equilibrated. The first two control laws considered are based on direct output feedback and consist of tuning the actuator feedback gains to the lowest mode intended to receive damping. The first method feeds back only the position and velocity of the proof mass relative to the structure; this results in a traditional vibration absorber. The second method includes the same feedback paths as the first plus feedback of the local structural velocity. The third law is designed with robust H infinity control theory. The fourth strategy is an active implementation of a viscous damper, where the actuator is configured to provide a bending moment at two points on the structure. The vibration control system is then evaluated in terms of how it would benefit the space structure's position control system

Channel equalization to achieve high bit rates in discrete multitone systems
textMulticarrier modulation (MCM) techniques such as orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing (OFDM) and discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation are attractive
for high-speed data communications due to the ease with which MCM can combat
channel dispersion. With all the benefits MCM could give, DMT modulation has an
extra ability to perform dynamic bit loading, which has the potential to exploit fully
the available bandwidth in a slowly time-varying channel. In broadband wireline
communications, DMT modulation is standardized for asymmetric digital subscribe
line (ADSL) and very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) modems. ADSL
and VDSL standards are used by telephone companies to provide high speed data
service to residences and offices.
In an ADSL receiver, an equalizer is required to compensate for the channel’s
dispersion in the time domain and the channel’s distortion in the frequency domain
of the transmitted waveform. This dissertation proposes design methods for linear
equalizers to increase the bit rate of the connection. The methods are amenable
to implementation on programmable fixed-point digital signal processors, which are
employed in ADSL/VDSL transceivers.
A conventional ADSL equalizer consists of a time-domain equalizer, a fast
Fourier transform, and a frequency domain equalizer. The time domain equalizer
(TEQ) is a finite impulse response filter that when coupled with a discretized channel
produces an equivalent channel whose impulse response is shorter than that of
the discretized channel. This channel shortening is required by the ADSL standards.
In this dissertation, I first propose a linear phase TEQ design that exploits symmetry
in existing eigen-filter approaches such as minimum mean square error(MMSE),
maximum shortening signal to noise ratio (MSSNR) and minimum intersymbol interference
(Min-ISI) equalizers. TEQs with symmetric coefficients can reach the
same performance as non-symmetric ones with much lower training complexity.
Second, I improve Min-ISI design. I reformulate the cost function to make
long TEQs design feasible. I remove the dependency of transmission delay in order
to reduce the complexity associated with delay optimization. The quantized
weighting is introduced to further lower the complexity. I also propose an iterative
optimization procedure of Min-ISI that completely avoids Cholesky decomposition
hence is better suited for a fixed-point implementation.
Finally I propose a dual-path TEQ structure, which designs a standard singleFIR
TEQ to achieve good bit rate over the entire transmission bandwidth, and
designs another FIR TEQ to improve the bit rate over a subset of subcarriers. Dualpath
TEQ can be viewed as a special case of a complex valued filter bank structure
that delivers the best bit rate of existing DMT equalizers. However, dual-path
TEQ provides a very good tradeoff between achievable bit rate vs. implementation
complexity on a programmable digital signal processor.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
System Level Synthesis
This article surveys the System Level Synthesis framework, which presents a
novel perspective on constrained robust and optimal controller synthesis for
linear systems. We show how SLS shifts the controller synthesis task from the
design of a controller to the design of the entire closed loop system, and
highlight the benefits of this approach in terms of scalability and
transparency. We emphasize two particular applications of SLS, namely
large-scale distributed optimal control and robust control. In the case of
distributed control, we show how SLS allows for localized controllers to be
computed, extending robust and optimal control methods to large-scale systems
under practical and realistic assumptions. In the case of robust control, we
show how SLS allows for novel design methodologies that, for the first time,
quantify the degradation in performance of a robust controller due to model
uncertainty -- such transparency is key in allowing robust control methods to
interact, in a principled way, with modern techniques from machine learning and
statistical inference. Throughout, we emphasize practical and efficient
computational solutions, and demonstrate our methods on easy to understand case

Analog Feedback Communication System with Receive Diversity and MRC
This study investigates the analog feedback communication system (AFCS) architecture considering Rayleigh fading channel model and receive diversity maximum ratio combining (MRC). This architecture employs a power-efficient transmitting unit, an estimator at the receiver side and iterative algorithm that minimizes the mean square error (MSE). Using the feedback channel, the estimated received sample is fed back to the transmitter. The performance of AFCS with the Rayleigh fading channel model is evaluated using MSE optimization. The investigation revealed that when compared to a single input single output AFCS system, the diversity-enabled AFCS system achieves negligible MSE in fewer iterations. MSE of order 10 −3 is achieved by 6 receive antennas with MRC in only 4 iterations at 0dB channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), compared to a single input single output AFCS system that requires more than 10 iterations to achieve the same order of MSE
