Space-time coding techniques with bit-interleaved coded modulations for MIMO block-fading channels
The space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation (ST-BICM) is an efficient
technique to obtain high diversity and coding gain on a block-fading MIMO
channel. Its maximum-likelihood (ML) performance is computed under ideal
interleaving conditions, which enables a global optimization taking into
account channel coding. Thanks to a diversity upperbound derived from the
Singleton bound, an appropriate choice of the time dimension of the space-time
coding is possible, which maximizes diversity while minimizing complexity.
Based on the analysis, an optimized interleaver and a set of linear precoders,
called dispersive nucleo algebraic (DNA) precoders are proposed. The proposed
precoders have good performance with respect to the state of the art and exist
for any number of transmit antennas and any time dimension. With turbo codes,
they exhibit a frame error rate which does not increase with frame length.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Trans. on Information Theory, Submission: January

Cyclic division algebras: a tool for space-time coding
Multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver ends of a wireless digital transmission channel may increase both data rate and reliability. Reliable high rate transmission over such channels can only be achieved through Space–Time coding. Rank and determinant code design criteria have been proposed to enhance diversity and coding gain. The special case of full-diversity criterion requires that the difference of any two distinct codewords has full rank.
Extensive work has been done on Space–Time coding, aiming at
finding fully diverse codes with high rate. Division algebras have been proposed as a new tool for constructing Space–Time codes, since they are non-commutative algebras that naturally yield linear fully diverse codes. Their algebraic properties can thus be further exploited to
improve the design of good codes.
The aim of this work is to provide a tutorial introduction to the algebraic tools involved in the design of codes based on cyclic division algebras. The different design criteria involved will be illustrated, including the constellation shaping, the information lossless property, the non-vanishing determinant property, and the diversity multiplexing trade-off. The final target is to give the complete mathematical background underlying the construction of the Golden code and the other Perfect Space–Time block codes
Full Diversity Unitary Precoded Integer-Forcing
We consider a point-to-point flat-fading MIMO channel with channel state
information known both at transmitter and receiver. At the transmitter side, a
lattice coding scheme is employed at each antenna to map information symbols to
independent lattice codewords drawn from the same codebook. Each lattice
codeword is then multiplied by a unitary precoding matrix and sent
through the channel. At the receiver side, an integer-forcing (IF) linear
receiver is employed. We denote this scheme as unitary precoded integer-forcing
(UPIF). We show that UPIF can achieve full-diversity under a constraint based
on the shortest vector of a lattice generated by the precoding matrix . This constraint and a simpler version of that provide design criteria for
two types of full-diversity UPIF. Type I uses a unitary precoder that adapts at
each channel realization. Type II uses a unitary precoder, which remains fixed
for all channel realizations. We then verify our results by computer
simulations in , and MIMO using different QAM
constellations. We finally show that the proposed Type II UPIF outperform the
MIMO precoding X-codes at high data rates.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, to appear in IEEE-TW
Semantically Secure Lattice Codes for Compound MIMO Channels
We consider compound multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wiretap channels where
minimal channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is assumed. Code
construction is given for the special case of isotropic mutual information,
which serves as a conservative strategy for general cases. Using the flatness
factor for MIMO channels, we propose lattice codes universally achieving the
secrecy capacity of compound MIMO wiretap channels up to a constant gap
(measured in nats) that is equal to the number of transmit antennas. The
proposed approach improves upon existing works on secrecy coding for MIMO
wiretap channels from an error probability perspective, and establishes
information theoretic security (in fact semantic security). We also give an
algebraic construction to reduce the code design complexity, as well as the
decoding complexity of the legitimate receiver. Thanks to the algebraic
structures of number fields and division algebras, our code construction for
compound MIMO wiretap channels can be reduced to that for Gaussian wiretap
channels, up to some additional gap to secrecy capacity.Comment: IEEE Trans. Information Theory, to appea
Optimal space-time codes for the MIMO amplify-and-forward cooperative channel
In this work, we extend the non-orthogonal amplify-and-forward (NAF)
cooperative diversity scheme to the MIMO channel. A family of space-time block
codes for a half-duplex MIMO NAF fading cooperative channel with N relays is
constructed. The code construction is based on the non-vanishing determinant
criterion (NVD) and is shown to achieve the optimal diversity-multiplexing
tradeoff (DMT) of the channel. We provide a general explicit algebraic
construction, followed by some examples. In particular, in the single relay
case, it is proved that the Golden code and the 4x4 Perfect code are optimal
for the single-antenna and two-antenna case, respectively. Simulation results
reveal that a significant gain (up to 10dB) can be obtained with the proposed
codes, especially in the single-antenna case.Comment: submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, revised versio
High-Rate Space Coding for Reconfigurable 2x2 Millimeter-Wave MIMO Systems
Millimeter-wave links are of a line-of-sight nature. Hence, multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in the millimeter-wave band may not
achieve full spatial diversity or multiplexing. In this paper, we utilize
reconfigurable antennas and the high antenna directivity in the millimeter-wave
band to propose a rate-two space coding design for 2x2 MIMO systems. The
proposed scheme can be decoded with a low complexity maximum-likelihood
detector at the receiver and yet it can enhance the bit-error-rate performance
of millimeter-wave systems compared to traditional spatial multiplexing
schemes, such as the Vertical Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time Architecture
(VBLAST). Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate the efficiency of the
proposed code and show its superiority compared to existing rate-two space-time
block codes
