    Multipath and interference errors reduction in gps using antenna arrays

    The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide satellite based positioning system that provides any user with tridimensional position, speed and time information. The measured pseudorange is affected by the multipath propagation, which probably is the major source of errors for high precision systems. After a presentation of the GPS and the basic techniques employed to perform pseudorange measurements, the influence of the multipath components on the pseudorange measurement is explained. Like every system the GPS is also exposed to the errors that can be caused by the interferences, and a lot of civil applications need robust receivers to interferences for reasons of safety. In this paper some signal array processing techniques for reducing the code measurement errors due to the multipath propagation and the interferences are presented. Firstly, a non-adaptive beamforming is used. Secondly, a variant of the MUSIC and the maximum likelihood estimator can be used to estimate the DOA of the reflections and the interferences, and then a weight vector that removes these signals is calculated. In the third place, a beamforming with temporal reference is presented; the reference is not the GPS signal itself, but the output of a matched filter to the code. We propose an antenna geometry-invariant method that adopts the generalized-likelihood-ratio test (GLRT) methodology, supported by a maximum-likelihood-ratio lower-bound analysis that allows erroneous solutions ("outliers") to be found and rectified.     A room acoustics measurement system using non-invasive microphone arrays

    This thesis summarises research into adaptive room correction for small rooms and pre-recorded material, for example music of films. A measurement system to predict the sound at a remote location within a room, without a microphone at that location was investigated. This would allow the sound within a room to be adaptively manipulated to ensure that all listeners received optimum sound, therefore increasing their enjoyment. The solution presented used small microphone arrays, mounted on the room's walls. A unique geometry and processing system was designed, incorporating three processing stages, temporal, spatial and spectral. The temporal processing identifies individual reflection arrival times from the recorded data. Spatial processing estimates the angles of arrival of the reflections so that the three-dimensional coordinates of the reflections' origin can be calculated. The spectral processing then estimates the frequency response of the reflection. These estimates allow a mathematical model of the room to be calculated, based on the acoustic measurements made in the actual room. The model can then be used to predict the sound at different locations within the room. A simulated model of a room was produced to allow fast development of algorithms. Measurements in real rooms were then conducted and analysed to verify the theoretical models developed and to aid further development of the system.     This is a software paper, which main objective is to provide practical information on how to use SPOT-GPR release 1.0, a MATLAB®-based software for the analysis of ground penetrating radar (GPR) profiles. The software allows detecting targets and estimating their position in a two-dimensional scenario, it has a graphical user interface and implements an innovative sub-array processing method. SPOT-GPR was developed in the framework of the COST Action TU1208 “Civil Engineering Applications of Ground Penetrating Radar” and is available for free download on the website of the Action (www.GPRadar.eu)

    Direction-of-Arrival Estimation Based on Sparse Recovery with Second-Order Statistics

    Traditional direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation techniques perform Nyquist-rate sampling of the received signals and as a result they require high storage. To reduce sampling ratio, we introduce level-crossing (LC) sampling which captures samples whenever the signal crosses predetermined reference levels, and the LC-based analog-to-digital converter (LC ADC) has been shown to efficiently sample certain classes of signals. In this paper, we focus on the DOA estimation problem by using second-order statistics based on the LC samplings recording on one sensor, along with the synchronous samplings of the another sensors, a sparse angle space scenario can be found by solving an ell1ell_1 minimization problem, giving the number of sources and their DOA's. The experimental results show that our proposed method, when compared with some existing norm-based constrained optimization compressive sensing (CS) algorithms, as well as subspace method, improves the DOA estimation performance, while using less samples when compared with Nyquist-rate sampling and reducing sensor activity especially for long time silence signal

In particular, the amplitude and phase information of the sparse solution is considered holistically to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DOA), where a resampling technique is developed to determine which information will give a more precise estimation.     Opportunistic Angle of Arrival Estimation in Impaired Scenarios

    This work if focused on the analysis and the development of Angle of Arrival (AoA) radio localization methods. The radio positioning system considered is constituted by a radio source and by a receiving array of antennas. The positioning algorithms treated in this work are designed to have a passive and opportunistic approach. The opportunistic attribute implies that the radio localization algorithms are designed to provide the AoA estimation with nearly-zero information on the transmitted signals. No training sequences or waveforms custom designed for localization are taken into account. The localization is termed passive since there is no collaboration between the transmitter and the receiver during the localization process. Then, the algorithms treated in this work are designed to eavesdrop already existing communication signals and to locate their radio source with nearly-zero knowledge of the signal and without the collaboration of the transmitting node. First of all, AoA radio localization algorithms can be classified in terms of involved signals (narrowband or broadband), antenna array pattern (L-shaped, circular, etc.), signal structure (sinusoidal, training sequences, etc.), Differential Time of Arrival (D-ToA) / Differential Phase of Arrival (D-PoA) and collaborative/non collaborative. Than, the most detrimental effects for radio communications are treated: the multipath (MP) channels and the impaired hardware. A geometric model for the MP is analysed and implemented to test the robustness of the proposed methods. The effects of MP on the received signals statistics from the AoA estimation point-of-view are discussed. The hardware impairments for the most common components are introduced and their effects in the AoA estimation process are analysed. Two novel algorithms that exploits the AoA from signal snapshots acquired sequentially with a time division approach are presented. The acquired signals are QAM waveforms eavesdropped from a pre-existing communication. The proposed methods, namely Constellation Statistical Pattern IDentification and Overlap (CSP-IDO) and Bidimensional CSP-IDO (BCID), exploit the probability density function (pdf) of the received signals to obtain the D-PoA. Both CSP-IDO and BCID use the statistical pattern of received signals exploiting the transmitter statistical signature. Since the presence of hardware impairments modify the statistical pattern of the received signals, CSP-IDO and BCID are able to exploit it to improve the performance with respect to (w.r.t.) the ideal case. Since the proposed methods can be used with a switched antenna architecture they are implementable with a reduced hardware contrariwise to synchronous methods like MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) that are not applicable. Then, two iterative AoA estimation algorithms for the dynamic tracking of moving radio sources are implemented. Statistical methods, namely PF, are used to implement the iterative tracking of the AoA from D-PoA measures in two different scenarios: automotive and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The AoA tracking of an electric car signalling with a IEEE 802.11p-like standard is implemented using a test-bed and real measures elaborated with a the proposed Particle Swarm Adaptive Scattering (PSAS) algorithm. The tracking of a UAV moving in the 3D space is investigated emulating the UAV trajectory using the proposed Confined Area Random Aerial Trajectory Emulator (CARATE) algorithm
