    Differential Reinforcement in the Online Radicalization of Western Muslim Women Converts

    The emerging phenomenon of Western women Islamic converts learning radicalized ideology through social media constitutes a challenge to cyber policy makers hampered by a lack of gender-nuanced radicalization research. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study was to develop a greater understanding of how the differential reinforcement tenet of social learning theory may help to explain the conversion and radicalization of Western women towards a fundamentalist Islamic ideology through their participation in the social media. Key research questions explored how participation in online social media may create vulnerability towards radicalization and exploitation. The blogs of 3 different Western women converts were selected from the social media website Tumblr for the period of January 2014 through September 2015. Approximately 21,700 posted entries were subjected to a deductive coding process and thematic analysis. Key findings indicated that fervent activism, strong commitment to the digital community, and a tepid response to world terrorist attacks were potential vulnerabilities for targeted radicalization. Additionally, authors increased the number of their ideology-related posts in response to increased reader interactions. Finally, reader responses did not appear to alter the bloggers\u27 static and strongly held positions on cultural gender roles. The positive social change implications stemming from this study include a starting point for the development of a formal adolescent cyber educational program, new metadata delimiters for the identification and engagement of vulnerable women, and as an example of the use of public policy theoretical frameworks for homeland security research

    Examining Gender Responsive Implementation of National Climate Change Policies

    Globally, there is a growing recognition of implementing gender considerations into national climate change policies and actions. However, examining climate policies at the domestic level remains an under researched topic. The aim of this study is to investigate if countries are reflecting gender equality concerns and the linkages between climate change within their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Communications (NCs) (both of which are national climate change policies) in a gender responsive manner. Through the literature review, which incorporates feminist perspectives, this research identifies five key concepts that can contribute to the gender responsive implementation of climate change policies. The following five concepts were used to build the gender responsive criteria: human rights, gender equal participation, power relations, gender mainstreaming and budgeting. Using the gender responsive criteria, I performed thematic analysis of six countries (Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Finland, Indonesia and Sweden) NDCs and NCs. The thematic analysis revealed various findings regarding the reflection of gender responsive implementation in the policies analyzed. Several data extracts displayed multiple connections with the gender responsive criteria, however the majority of the NDCs and NCs did not incorporate gender responsive concepts consistently throughout the policies. Much of the language pertaining to gender was geared towards empowering girls and women in developing countries; frequently positioned women as vulnerable in the context of climate change and often discussed gender in relation to adaptation and disaster reduction strategies. Such findings were anticipated as these issues are highlighted across the gender and climate change policy literature. However, the results from the analysis provided useful insights on the current situation on gender responsive implementation in NDCs and NCs

In the past two decades, change researchers have started to investigate change recipients' reactions to change recognizing the crucial role of these reactions for successful change. This symposium aims at identifying and discussing the complex processes that underlie the relationships among antecedents, reactions and outcomes associated with organizational change. New perspective / contributions This symposium consists of five studies that extend our knowledge in the field by (i) providing an analysis of change recipients' reactions going beyond the dichotomous approaches (acceptance or resistance) (ii) revealing understudied antecedents-reactions and reactions-consequences patterns and relationships (iii) shedding light on the role of contextual factors i.e team climate and individual factors i.e emotion regulation on the adaptation to change. This symposium is based on a combination of both quantitative (i.e diary, survey) and qualitative (i.e interviews) research methodology. Research / practical implications This symposium aims to increase our understanding of the complex processes associated with change recipients' reactions to change. Discovering how these reactions are created and what are their results may reveal important contingencies that can explain how positive organizational outcomes during times of change can be stimulated which is beneficial for both researchers and practitioners

    State of the Art Qigong is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TMC) and aims to balance body and mind. The roots of Qigong lie in China, where Confucian and Daoist scholars (500-400 B.C.) noted that one must learn to balance and relax one’s thoughts and emotions to avoid illness (Yang, 1997). In the Western world, Qigong is best known for its slow and coordinated movements. According to TCM, these movements will help regulate one’s ‘qi’, or life energy, through the body to improve the health and harmony of mind and body. During the practice of Qigong, one’s breathing, attention and movement are aligned. As such, Qigong is sometimes considered Mindfulness in movement (although there are many important differences). New perspectives / contributionsQigong has many positive outcomes on health and wellness. In both patient groups and healthy individuals, Qigong has been shown to improve psychological well-being, quality of life, immune function, balance and related risk-factors, and bone density (Jahnke et al., 2010). As such, Qigong offers a validated way to reduce the physical and mental activation that results from a person's work. While recent research has demonstrated how important it is to take short breaks at work, there is still little attention for Qigong exercises as a means to recover at work.Practical Implications In this presentation, we will explain and practice several Qigong exercises. These movements can be used at work (and at home) to recover from (hormonal) activation, ‘empty’ one’s head, and restore the body-mind balance. <br/
