    Behavioural Evidence Analysis Applied to Digital Forensics: An Empirical Analysis of Child Pornography Cases using P2P Networks

    The utility of Behavioural Evidence Analysis (BEA) has gained attention in the field of Digital Forensics in recent years. It has been recognized that, along with technical examination of digital evidence, it is important to learn as much as possible about the individuals behind an offence, the victim(s) and the dynamics of a crime. This can assist the investigator in producing a more accurate and complete reconstruction of the crime, in interpreting associated digital evidence, and with the description of investigative findings. Despite these potential benefits, the literature shows limited use of BEA for the investigation of cases of the possession and dissemination of Sexually Exploitative Imagery of Children (SEIC). This paper represents a step towards filling this gap. It reports on the forensic analysis of 15 SEIC cases involving P2P filesharing networks, obtained from the Dubai Police. Results confirmed the predicted benefits and indicate that BEA can assist digital forensic practitioners and prosecutors

    A systematic survey of online data mining technology intended for law enforcement

    As an increasing amount of crime takes on a digital aspect, law enforcement bodies must tackle an online environment generating huge volumes of data. With manual inspections becoming increasingly infeasible, law enforcement bodies are optimising online investigations through data-mining technologies. Such technologies must be well designed and rigorously grounded, yet no survey of the online data-mining literature exists which examines their techniques, applications and rigour. This article remedies this gap through a systematic mapping study describing online data-mining literature which visibly targets law enforcement applications, using evidence-based practices in survey making to produce a replicable analysis which can be methodologically examined for deficiencies

    Evidence Collection for Forensic Investigation in Peer to Peer Systems

    Abstract Peer to Peer(P2P) file sharing networks are amongst the best free sources of information on the internet. Voluntary participation and lack of control makes them a very attractive option to share data anonymously. However a small group of people take advantage of the freedom provided by these networks and share content that is prohibited by law. Apart from copyrighted content, there are cases where people share les related to Child Pornography which is a criminal offense. Law enforcement attempts to track down these offenders by obtaining a court order for search and seizure of computers at a suspect location. These seized computers are forensically examined using storage and memory-forensics tools. However before the search warrant is issued strong evidence must be presented to provide a reason for suspiscion. Deficient investigation in the intial stages might lead to mis-identification of the source and steer the investigation in a wrong direction. Initial evidence collection on peer to peer le sharing networks is a challenge due to the lack of a central point of control and highly dynamic nature of the networks. The goal of this work is to create a working prototype of an initial evidence collection tool for forensics in P2P networks. The prototype is based on the idea that P2P networks could be monitored by introducing modified peer nodes onto the network for a certain time period and recording relevant information about nodes that possess criminally offensive content. Logging information sent by a suspicious node along with timestamps and unique identication information would provide a strong, verfiiable initial evidence. This work presents one such working prototype in alignment with the goals stated above

    An exploration of the technological behaviours of previously convicted child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) offenders provides a foundation for future applied research into deterrence, investigation, and treatment efforts. This study evaluates the technology choices and transitions of individuals previously convicted of CSEM offenses. Based on their inclusion in two sex offender registries, anonymous survey results (n=78) were collected from English-speaking adults within the United States. CSEM offenders chose technologies based on both utility and perceived risk; peer-to-peer and web-browsers were the most common gateway technologies and showed substantial sustained usage; a substantial minority of users never stored CSEM and only viewed it; most respondents used more than one technology to view CSEM; CSEM offenders used more countermeasures than the public but did not use encryption at higher rates; almost all CSEM consumers started viewing adult SEM first; and countermeasures were used primarily to reduce psychological strain (anxiety)

    Fighting Child Pornography: A Review of Legal and Technological Developments

    In our digitally connected world, the law is arguably behind the technological developments of the Internet age. While this causes many issues for law enforcement, it is of particular concern in the area of child pornography in the United States. With the wide availability of technologies such as digital cameras, peer-to-peer file sharing, strong encryption, Internet anonymizers and cloud computing, the creation and distribution of child pornography has become more widespread. Simultaneously, fighting the growth of this crime has become more difficult. This paper explores the development of both the legal and technological environments surrounding digital child pornography. In doing so, we cover the complications that court decisions have given law enforcement who are trying to investigate and prosecute child pornographers. We then provide a review of the technologies used in this crime and the forensic challenges that cloud computing creates for law enforcement. We note that both legal and technological developments since the 1990s seem to be working to the advantage of users and sellers of child pornography. Before concluding, we provide a discussion and offer observations regarding this subject
