    Simulations and Algorithms on Reconfigurable Meshes With Pipelined Optical Buses.

    Recently, many models using reconfigurable optically pipelined buses have been proposed in the literature. A system with an optically pipelined bus uses optical waveguides, with unidirectional propagation and predictable delays, instead of electrical buses to transfer information among processors. These two properties enable synchronized concurrent access to an optical bus in a pipelined fashion. Combined with the abilities of the bus structure to broadcast and multicast, this architecture suits many communication-intensive applications. We establish the equivalence of three such one-dimensional optical models, namely the LARPBS, LPB, and POB. This implies an automatic translation of algorithms (without loss of speed or efficiency) among these models. In particular, since the LPB is the same as an LARPBS without the ability to segment its buses, their equivalence establishes reconfigurable delays (rather than segmenting ability) as the key to the power of optically pipelined models. We also present simulations for a number of two-dimensional optical models and establish that they possess the same complexity, so that any of these models can simulate a step of one of the other models in constant time with a polynomial increase in size. Specifically, we determine the complexity of three two-dimensional optical models (the PR-Mesh, APPBS, and AROB) to be the same as the well known LR-Mesh and the cycle-free LR-Mesh. We develop algorithms for the LARPBS and PR-Mesh that are more efficient than existing algorithms in part by exploiting the pipelining, segmenting, and multicasting characteristics of these models. We also consider the implications of certain physical constraints placed on the system by restricting the distance over which two processors are able to communicate. All algorithms developed for these models assume that a healthy system is available. We present some fundamental algorithms that are able to tolerate up to N/2 faults on an N-processor LARPBS. We then extend these results to apply to other algorithms in the areas of image processing and matrix operations

    Foreground Removal in a Multi-Camera System

    Traditionally, whiteboards have been used to brainstorm, teach, and convey ideas with others. However distributing whiteboard content remotely can be challenging. To solve this problem, A multi-camera system was developed which can be scaled to broadcast an arbitrarily large writing surface while removing objects not related to the whiteboard content. Related research has been performed previously to combine multiple images together, identify and remove unrelated objects, also referred to as foreground, in a single image and correct for warping differences in camera frames. However, this is the first time anyone has attempted to solve this problem using a multi-camera system. The main components of this problem include stitching the input images together, identifying foreground material, and replacing the foreground information with the most recent background (desired) information. This problem can be subdivided into two main components: fusing multiple images into one cohesive frame, and detecting/removing foreground objects. for the first component, homographic transformations are used to create a mathematical mapping from the input image to the desired reference frame. Blending techniques are then applied to remove artifacts that remain after the perspective transform. For the second, statistical tests and modeling in conjunction with additional classification algorithms were used

    Monocular Camera Viewpoint-Invariant Vehicular Traffic Segmentation and Classification Utilizing Small Datasets

    The work presented here develops a computer vision framework that is view angle independent for vehicle segmentation and classification from roadway traffic systems installed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). An automated technique for extracting a region of interest is discussed to speed up the processing. The VDOT traffic videos are analyzed for vehicle segmentation using an improved robust low-rank matrix decomposition technique. It presents a new and effective thresholding method that improves segmentation accuracy and simultaneously speeds up the segmentation processing. Size and shape physical descriptors from morphological properties and textural features from the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) are extracted from the segmented traffic. Furthermore, a multi-class support vector machine classifier is employed to categorize different traffic vehicle types, including passenger cars, passenger trucks, motorcycles, buses, and small and large utility trucks. It handles multiple vehicle detections through an iterative k-means clustering over-segmentation process. The proposed algorithm reduced the processed data by an average of 40%. Compared to recent techniques, it showed an average improvement of 15% in segmentation accuracy, and it is 55% faster than the compared segmentation techniques on average. Moreover, a comparative analysis of 23 different deep learning architectures is presented. The resulting algorithm outperformed the compared deep learning algorithms for the quality of vehicle classification accuracy. Furthermore, the timing analysis showed that it could operate in real-time scenarios
