An Analysis Of Student Teachers’ Instruction In A Beginning Band Setting

This study investigated the teaching behaviors of student teachers in a beginning band setting and identified their instructional targets to compare the data between the participants from two different conditions, the on-podium condition and the off-podium condition. Previous research of expert and experienced teachers in a beginning band setting suggests those teachers were mobile during instruction, were proactive in managing transition periods, remained off the podium for greater durations while providing instruction, used modeling frequently, and provided specific directives toward goal attainment. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether student teachers more closely exhibit the instructional strategies of expert teachers if they are encouraged to become more mobile in the classroom. The participants were nine student teachers from regional, state, and flagship universities in the southeastern United States. Each participant was observed and video recorded over two separate 20-minute segments: 20 minutes in the on-podium condition and 20 minutes in the off-podium condition. Unique to this study was that student teachers were asked to remain off the podium for a specific amount of time so that an equal comparison could be made of instruction between the two conditions in a beginning band setting. In comparison between the two conditions, there were 34 single-performance-trial rehearsal frames and 2 multiple-performance-trial rehearsal frames in the on-podium condition, while there were 26 single-performance-trial rehearsal frames and 4 multiple-performance-trial rehearsal frames in the off-podium condition. Analysis of the multiple-performance-trial rehearsal frames from the off-podium condition revealed traits similar to that of experts, including more teacher talk and full ensemble performance of less duration. Additionally, there were more episodes of performance approximation, and the mean duration of student behavior decreased from an average of 24.25 seconds in the on-podium condition to an average of 9.5 seconds in the off-podium condition. There was evidence to suggest that instruction improved in the off-podium condition. It is suggested that in their college courses, student teachers must be taught to remain off of the podium when providing instruction to beginning band students. Specific growth elements and recommendations are included in the study

    McLaughlin-Walsh Residence Hall Expansion

An expansion of McLaughlin-Walsh Residence at Santa Clara University was designed to provide additional housing accommodations to on-campus residents. The design included both the structural and geotechnical components. The proposed solution included a vertical expansion of the residence hall with the design of a podium to span over the existing structure to support an additional residential structure. The loads of the additional residential structure were estimated to complete the design of the podium structure. The podium was designed to support the estimated loads using reinforced concrete columns, steel beams, prefabricated trusses, and concrete on metal deck. The podium design was selected over other considered alternatives due to its ability to provide housing vertically, rather than expanding horizontally. Using the loads from the additional residential structure and the podium structure, the foundations were designed. Due to the large loads, reinforced concrete drilled shaft foundations were selected and designed. The podium and foundations were designed to accommodate three (3) residential floors above the existing residence hall, which would provide housing for an additional 200-250 students

Student Demand for Streaming Lecture Video: Emprical Evidence from Undergraduate Economics Classes

    Get PDF
Real-time lectures recorded on video and streamed over the Internet are a useful supplement to non-classroom learning. However, because recording confines the instructor to the podium, the classroom experience is diminished when there is less social interaction. This study uses choice experiment data to estimate economics students' willingness to pay for streaming lecture video and instructor movement away from the podium. Results show a divide between students who like the flexibility of catching up on missed classes with video and students who do not. For this former group, video enhances the learning experience and students are willing to pay an additional $90 per course for video. An important source of streaming lecture video's value to students is its impact on performance. Knowledge equation estimates show a positive correlation between students' use of video and their cumulative final grade.

Analisis gempa dinamis menggunakan analisis time history. ;---Square buildings for behavior due to earthquake load can be predicted, but for buildings the shape of the podium will be more difficult to predict. One example is in the Springhill Terrace Residence Apartment. The purpose of this study was to determine the behavior of podium-shaped buildings due to earthquake loads. Behavior of these structures including displacement, deviation and shear forces of buildings. Dynamic earthquake analysis uses time history analysis. At the earthquake level, the accelerometer 4 selected actual earthquake plan is used, namely Landers Earthquake, San Fernando Earthquake, Northridge Earthquake and Tabas Earthquake. The selection of the earthquake record is in accordance with the magnitude of the earthquake in Jakarta of 7.2. Based on the analysis of buildings that were subjected to earthquake loads using the time history method, the Springhill Terrace Residences Apartment Building showed a total drift on the roof floor of 59,432 mm in the X direction and 81,598 mm in the Y direction. Drift that occurred on the podium and 1st floor had differences, for a podium of 0.211 mm in the X direction and 0.014 mm in the Y direction while the 1st floor is 1.44 mm in the X direction and 0.04 mm in the Y direction. The building performance criteria are at the Immediate Occupancy performance level

The Truth About Soviet Whaling: A Memoir

In November 1993, Professor Alexei Yablokov, who at the time was the Science Advisor to Russian President Boris Yeltsin, stood on a podium in Galveston, Tex., and delivered a speech to the Society for Marine Mammalogy’s biennial conference, the premier international event in the field of marine mammal science. Addressing the 1,500 scientists present, he made what amounted to a national confession: that, beginning in 1948, the U.S.S.R. had begun a huge campaign of illegal whaling. Despite being a signatory to the International Convention on the Regulation of Whaling (signed in Washington, D.C., just 2 years before in 1946), the Soviets set out to pillage the world’s ocea

Jamaan at the pass of Bi’rein. An Iron Age IIB-C Ammonite stronghold in central Jordan

In years 2015-2016 the Zarqa Directorate of the Department of Antiquities of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan carried out a rescue excavation at the site of Jamaan, an Iron Age IIB-C Ammonite stronghold 16 Km north of ‘Amman. The site survey and limited soundings allow to plot a plan of the structure, comprising an outer enclosure with a casemate wall, two cisterns, and a square podium tower, and to collect ceramic material dating from Iron Age IIB-C (c. 840-580 BC), as well as the head of a soft limestone statue, possibly depicting a local chief or an official. The latter adds to the relatively conspicuous number of statues from the Kingdom of Ammon, possibly illustrating the production of a non-royal commission
