    On the performance of broadcast algorithms in interconnection networks

    Broadcast Communication is among the most primitive collective capabilities of any message passing network. Broadcast algorithms for the mesh have been widely reported in the literature. However, most existing algorithms have been studied within limited conditions, such as light traffic load and fixed network sizes. In other words, most of these algorithms have not been studied at different Quality of Service (QoS) levels. In contrast, this study examines the broadcast operation, taking into account the scalability, parallelism, a wide range of traffic loads through the propagation of broadcast messages. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to consider the issue of broadcast latency at both the network and node levels across different traffic loads. Results are shown from a comparative analysis confirming that the coded-path based broadcast algorithms exhibit superior performance characteristics over some existing algorithms

    The data transmission delays become the bottleneck on modern high speed interconnection networks utilized by high performance computing or enterprise data centers. This motivates the study directed towards finding more efficient interconnection topologies as well as more efficient algorithms for information exchange between the nodes of the given network. Broadcasting is the process of distributing a message from a node, called the originator, to all other nodes of a communication network. Broadcasting is used as a basic communication primitive by many higher level network operations, which involve a set of nodes in distributed systems. Therefore, it is one the most important operations, which can determine the total efficiency of a given distributed system. We study interconnection networks via modeling them as graphs. The results described in this work can be used for efficient message routing algorithms in switch based interconnection networks as well as in the choice of the interconnection topologies of such networks. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 gives a general introduction to the research area and literature overview. Chapter 2 studies the family of graphs for which the broadcast time is equal to the diameter. Chapter 3 studies the routing and broadcasting problem in the Knodel graph. Chapter 4 studies the possible vertex degrees and the possible connections between vertices of different degrees in a broadcast graph. Using this, a new lower bound is obtained on broadcast function. Chapter 5 presents some miscellaneous results. Chapter 6 summarizes the thesis

    On the performance of routing algorithms in wormhole-switched multicomputer networks

    This paper presents a comparative performance study of adaptive and deterministic routing algorithms in wormhole-switched hypercubes and investigates the performance vicissitudes of these routing schemes under a variety of network operating conditions. Despite the previously reported results, our results show that the adaptive routing does not consistently outperform the deterministic routing even for high dimensional networks. In fact, it appears that the superiority of adaptive routing is highly dependent to the broadcast traffic rate generated at each node and it begins to deteriorate by growing the broadcast rate of generated message

    Applications and development of communication models for the touchstone GAMMA and DELTA prototypes

    The goal of this project was to develop models of the interconnection networks of the Intel iPSC/860 and DELTA multicomputers to guide the design of efficient algorithms for interprocessor communication in problems that commonly occur in CFD codes and other applications. Interprocessor communication costs of codes for message-passing architectures such as the iPSC/860 and DELTA significantly affect the level of performance that can be obtained from those machines. This project addressed several specific problems in the achievement of efficient communication on the Intel iPSC/860 hypercube and DELTA mesh. In particular, an efficient global processor synchronization algorithm was developed for the iPSC/860 and numerous broadcast algorithms were designed for the DELTA

    Tolerating multiple faults in multistage interconnection networks with minimal extra stages

    Adams and Siegel (1982) proposed an extra stage cube interconnection network that tolerates one switch failure with one extra stage. We extend their results and discover a class of extra stage interconnection networks that tolerate multiple switch failures with a minimal number of extra stages. Adopting the same fault model as Adams and Siegel, the faulty switches can be bypassed by a pair of demultiplexer/multiplexer combinations. It is easy to show that, to maintain point to point and broadcast connectivities, there must be at least S extra stages to tolerate I switch failures. We present the first known construction of an extra stage interconnection network that meets this lower-bound. This 12-dimensional multistage interconnection network has n+f stages and tolerates I switch failures. An n-bit label called mask is used for each stage that indicates the bit differences between the two inputs coming into a common switch. We designed the fault-tolerant construction such that it repeatedly uses the singleton basis of the n-dimensional vector space as the stage mask vectors. This construction is further generalized and we prove that an n-dimensional multistage interconnection network is optimally fault-tolerant if and only if the mask vectors of every n consecutive stages span the n-dimensional vector space

    Multistage Switching Architectures for Software Routers

    Software routers based on personal computer (PC) architectures are becoming an important alternative to proprietary and expensive network devices. However, software routers suffer from many limitations of the PC architecture, including, among others, limited bus and central processing unit (CPU) bandwidth, high memory access latency, limited scalability in terms of number of network interface cards, and lack of resilience mechanisms. Multistage PC-based architectures can be an interesting alternative since they permit us to i) increase the performance of single software routers, ii) scale router size, iii) distribute packet manipulation and control functionality, iv) recover from single-component failures, and v) incrementally upgrade router performance. We propose a specific multistage architecture, exploiting PC-based routers as switching elements, to build a high-speed, largesize,scalable, and reliable software router.
