    RADIO NETWORK PLANNING AND OPTIMIZATION IN MOBILE WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e)

    The project is mainly about the radio network design in Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) system. Being an IP based, wireless broadband technology WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) is able to provide performance-wise like 802.11/Wi-Fi networks while at same time possess cellular network-like performance in terms of coverage and QOS (quality of service). Its acronym has meaning of "Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). WiMAX is introduced by IEEE to handle metropolitan area. Fixed WiMAX do provide coverage up to 50 km while its variant, Mobile WiMAX can cover up to 5-15 km distance. This is in contrast to WiFi technology which covers wireless local area network with radius of 100m at most. WiMAX can operates on both licensed and non-licensed frequencies, providing a regulated environment and viable economic model for wireless carriers. WiMAX’s purpose is to verify interoperability wireless broadband radios between vendors. Testings of WiMAX equipments are done by WiMAX Forum, mainly to confirm interoperability. This is contrast to its 4G counterpart- the more recent Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard. LTE can be a parallel technology to WiMAX but LTE meant to provide controlled environment of Internet. LTE devices are hesitant to give free access while WiMAX is ready to serve metropolitan area unanimously. Residents of urban area or any densely populated area will have serious triple-play (voice, video, data) traffic congestion in terms of Internet connectivity when the physical link is in wired form. To elevate from congested to a much-less congested traffic, a wireless medium is proposed as an alternative to wired counterpart, that is WiMAX platform. WiMAX further divides into two category, Fixed WiMAX and Mobile WiMAX. For mobility advantages, Mobile WiMAX will be thouroughly discussed as the proposed solution for this problem. Ultimately, we will be able to verify performance of WiMAX network via simulator ArcMap running Cellular Expert interface, verify deployment of Base Station and verify optimized coverage pattern on the network

    CAC-TCP cross-layer interaction in a HAPS-satellite integrated scenario

    The integration of a satellite system with a HAPS segment appears very suitable to provide communication services, including Internet access, for a large set of applications. In fact, the-satellite capability to provide wide coverage and broadband access can be enhanced by the use of cost-effective, mobile/portable and low-power consuming user terminals, when HAPS acts as an intermediate repeater. Moreover, also TCP-based applications, which suffer from long latency introduced by the satellite link and in general by errors, can get benefits in terms of end-to-end performance. In this frame, this paper deals with the introduction, on board the HAPS, of an efficient CAC scheme in order to guarantee an optimal utilization of the precious radio resources. In particular, we propose an innovative TCP driven CAC algorithm, which shall take into account not only the QoS requirements, but also TCP statistics obtained through a proxy installed on the HAPS. Results show that the overall system performance in terms of both average throughput and blocking probability is significantly improved

    On Factors Affecting the Usage and Adoption of a Nation-wide TV Streaming Service

    Using nine months of access logs comprising 1.9 Billion sessions to BBC iPlayer, we survey the UK ISP ecosystem to understand the factors affecting adoption and usage of a high bandwidth TV streaming application across different providers. We find evidence that connection speeds are important and that external events can have a huge impact for live TV usage. Then, through a temporal analysis of the access logs, we demonstrate that data usage caps imposed by mobile ISPs significantly affect usage patterns, and look for solutions. We show that product bundle discounts with a related fixed-line ISP, a strategy already employed by some mobile providers, can better support user needs and capture a bigger share of accesses. We observe that users regularly split their sessions between mobile and fixed-line connections, suggesting a straightforward strategy for offloading by speculatively pre-fetching content from a fixed-line ISP before access on mobile devices.Comment: In Proceedings of IEEE INFOCOM 201

In developing nations, mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration between 2000-2009 was increasingly more popular than fixed broadband subscriptions. To achieve the goal of universal access, with rapid implementation of ICT infrastructure to complement the sparsely distributed terrestrial networks in the hinterlands and leveraging the adequate submarine cables along the African coastline, African nations and their stakeholders are promoting and implementing Communication Satellite systems, particularly in Nigeria, to help bridge the digital hiatus.     This paper intends to look deeper into finding an ideal mobile broadband solution. Special stress has been put in the South Asian region through some comparative analysis. Proving their competency in numerous aspects, WiMAX and LTE already have already made a strong position in telecommunication industry. Both WiMAX and LTE are 4G technologies designed to move data rather than voice having IP networks based on OFDM technology. So, they aren't like typical technological rivals as of GSM and CDMA. But still a gesture of hostility seems to outburst long before the stable commercial launch of LTE. In this paper various aspects of WiMAX and LTE for deployment have been analyzed. Again, we tried to make every possible consideration with respect to south Asia i.e. how mass people of this region may be benefited. As a result, it might be regarded as a good source in case of making major BWA deployment decisions in this region.
