    A grid computing system is designed for solving complicated scientific and commercial problems effectively,whereas mobile computing is a traditional distributed system having computing capability with mobility and adopting wireless communications. Media and Entertainment fields can take advantage from both paradigms by applying its usage in gaming applications and multimedia data management. Multimedia data has to be stored and retrieved in an efficient and effective manner to put it in use. In this paper, we proposed an application layer protocol for delivery of multimedia data in wireless girds i.e. multimedia grid protocol (MMGP). To make streaming efficient a new video compression algorithm called dWave is designed and embedded in the proposed protocol. This protocol will provide faster, reliable access and render an imperceptible QoS in delivering multimedia in wireless grid environment and tackles the challenging issues such as i) intermittent connectivity, ii) device heterogeneity, iii) weak security and iv) device mobility.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, Peer Reviewed Journa

    Automatically Parallelizing Embedded Legacy Software on Soft-Core SoCs

    Nowadays, embedded systems are utilized in many areas and become omnipresent, making people's lives more comfortable. Embedded systems have to handle more and more functionality in many products. To maintain the often required low energy consumption, multi-core systems provide high performance at moderate energy consumption. The development started with dual-core processors and has today reached many-core designs with dozens and hundreds of processor cores. However, existing applications can barely leverage the potential of that many cores. Legacy applications are usually written sequentially and thus typically use only one processor core. Thus, these applications do not benefit from the advantages provided by modern many-core systems. Rewriting those applications to use multiple cores requires new skills from developers and it is also time-consuming and highly error prone. Dozens of languages, APIs and compilers have already been presented in the past decades to aid the user with parallelizing applications. Fully automatic parallelizing compilers are seen as the holy grail, since the user effort is kept minimal. However, automatic parallelizers often cannot extract parallelism as good as user aided approaches. Most of these parallelization tools are designed for desktop and high-performance systems and are thus not tuned or applicable for low performance embedded systems. To improve this situation, this work presents an automatic parallelizer for embedded systems, which is able to mostly deliver better quality than user aided approaches and if not allows easy manual fine-tuning. Parallelization tools extract concurrently executable tasks from an application. These tasks can then be executed on different processor cores. Parallelization tools and automatic parallelizers in particular often struggle to efficiently map the extracted parallelism to an existing multi-core processor. This work uses soft-core processors on FPGAs, which makes it possible to realize custom multi-core designs in hardware, within a few minutes. This allows to adapt the multi-core processor to the characteristics of the extracted parallelism. Especially, core-interconnects for communication can be optimized to fit the communication pattern of the parallel application. Embedded applications are often structured as follows: receive input data, (multiple) data processing steps, data output. The multiple processing steps are often realized as consecutive loosely coupled transformations. These steps naturally already model the structure of a processing pipeline. It is the goal of this work to extract this kind of pipeline-parallelism from an application and map it to multiple cores to increase the overall throughput of the system. Multiple cores forming a chain with direct communication channels ideally fit this pattern. The previously described, so called pipeline-parallelism is a barely addressed concept in most parallelization tools. Also, current multi-core designs often do not support the hardware flexibility provided by soft-cores, targeted in this approach. The main contribution of this work is an automatic parallelizer which is able to map different processing steps from the source-code of a sequential application to different cores in a multi-core pipeline. Users only specify the required processing speed after parallelization. The developed tool tries to extract a matching parallelized software design along with a custom multi-core design out of sequential embedded legacy applications. The automatically created multi-core system already contains used peripherals extracted from the source-code and is ready to be used. The presented parallelizer implements multi-objective optimization to generate a minimal hardware design, just fulfilling the user defined requirement. To the best of my knowledge, the possibility to generate such a multi-core pipeline defined by the demands of the parallelized software has never been presented before. The approach is implemented for two soft-core processors and evaluation shows for both targets high speedups of 12x and higher at a reasonable hardware overhead. Compared to other automatic parallelizers, which mainly focus on speedups through latency reduction, significantly higher speedups can be achieved depending on the given application structure

    Real-time sound synthesis on a multi-processor platform

    Real-time sound synthesis means that the calculation and output of each sound sample for a channel of audio information must be completed within a sample period. At a broadcasting standard, a sampling rate of 32,000 Hz, the maximum period available is 31.25 μsec. Such requirements demand a large amount of data processing power. An effective solution for this problem is a multi-processor platform; a parallel and distributed processing system. The suitability of the MIDI [Music Instrument Digital Interface] standard, published in 1983, as a controller for real-time applications is examined. Many musicians have expressed doubts on the decade old standard's ability for real-time performance. These have been investigated by measuring timing in various musical gestures, and by comparing these with the subjective characteristics of human perception. An implementation and its optimisation of real-time additive synthesis programs on a multi-transputer network are described. A prototype 81-polyphonic-note- organ configuration was implemented. By devising and deploying monitoring processes, the network's performance was measured and enhanced, leading to an efficient usage; the 88-note configuration. Since 88 simultaneous notes are rarely necessary in most performances, a scheduling program for dynamic note allocation was then introduced to achieve further efficiency gains. Considering calculation redundancies still further, a multi-sampling rate approach was applied as a further step to achieve an optimal performance. The theories underlining sound granulation, as a means of constructing complex sounds from grains, and the real-time implementation of this technique are outlined. The idea of sound granulation is quite similar to the quantum-wave theory, "acoustic quanta". Despite the conceptual simplicity, the signal processing requirements set tough demands, providing a challenge for this audio synthesis engine. Three issues arising from the results of the implementations above are discussed; the efficiency of the applications implemented, provisions for new processors and an optimal network architecture for sound synthesis

    Hardware/Software Co-Design of Ultra-Low Power Biomedical Monitors

    Ongoing changes in world demographics and the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles are imposing a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery. Nowadays, chronic ailments such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and diabetes, represent the most common causes of death according to the World Health Organization. It is estimated that 63% of deaths worldwide are directly or indirectly related to these non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and by 2030 it is predicted that the health delivery cost will reach an amount comparable to 75% of the current GDP. In this context, technologies based on Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSNs) effectively alleviate this burden enabling the conception of wearable biomedical monitors composed of one or several devices connected through a Wireless Body Sensor Network (WBSN). Energy efficiency is of paramount importance for these devices, which must operate for prolonged periods of time with a single battery charge. In this thesis I propose a set of hardware/software co-design techniques to drastically increase the energy efficiency of bio-medical monitors. To this end, I jointly explore different alternatives to reduce the required computational effort at the software level while optimizing the power consumption of the processing hardware by employing ultra-low power multi-core architectures that exploit DSP application characteristics. First, at the sensor level, I study the utilization of a heartbeat classifier to perform selective advanced DSP on state-of-the-art ECG bio-medical monitors. To this end, I developed a framework to design and train real-time, lightweight heartbeat neuro-fuzzy classifiers, detail- ing the required optimizations to efficiently execute them on a resource-constrained platform. Then, at the network level I propose a more complex transmission-aware WBSN for activity monitoring that provides different tradeoffs between classification accuracy and transmission volume. In this work, I study the combination of a minimal set of WSNs with a smartphone, and propose two classification schemes that trade accuracy for transmission volume. The proposed method can achieve accuracies ranging from 88% to 97% and can save up to 86% of wireless transmissions, outperforming the state-of-the-art alternatives. Second, I propose a synchronization-based low-power multi-core architecture for bio-signal processing. I introduce a hardware/software synchronization mechanism that allows to achieve high energy efficiency while parallelizing the execution of multi-channel DSP applications. Then, I generalize the methodology to support bio-signal processing applications with an arbitrarily high degree of parallelism. Due to the benefits of SIMD execution and software pipelining, the architecture can reduce its power consumption by up 38% when compared to an equivalent low-power single-core alternative. Finally, I focused on the optimization of the multi-core memory subsystem, which is the major contributor to the overall system power consumption. First I considered a hybrid memory subsystem featuring a small reliable partition that can operate at ultra-low voltage enabling low-power buffering of data and obtaining up to 50% energy savings. Second, I explore a two-level memory hierarchy based on non-volatile memories (NVM) that allows for aggressive fine-grained power gating enabled by emerging low-power NVM technologies and monolithic 3D integration. Experimental results show that, by adopting this memory hierarchy, power consumption can be reduced by 5.42x in the DSP stage
