    A line-balancing strategy for designing flexible assembly systems

    We present a rough-cut analysis tool that quickly determines a few potential cost-effective designs at the initial design stage of flexible assembly systems (FASs) prior to a detailed analysis such as simulation. It uses quantitative methods for selecting and configuring the components of an FAS suitable for medium to high volumes of several similar products. The system is organized as a series of assembly stations linked with an automated material-handling system moving parts in a unidirectional flow. Each station consists of a single machine or of identical parallel machines. The methods exploit the ability of flexible hardware to switch almost instantaneously from product to product.     The investigation of the effect of scheduling rules on FMS performance

    The application of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) has an effect in competitiveness, not only of individual companies but of those countries whose manufactured exports play a significant part in their economy (Hartley, 1984). However, the increasing use of FM Ss to effectively provide customers with diversified products has created a significant set of operational challenges for managers (Mahmoodi et al., 1999). In more recent years therefore, there has been a concentration of effort on FMS scheduling without which the benefits of an FMS cannot be realized. The objective of the reported research is to investigate and extend the contribution which can be made to the FMS scheduling problem through the implementation of computer-based experiments that consider real-time situations.     Performance evaluation for systems of pooled machines of unequal sizes: Unbalancing versus balancing

    This research explores the appropriateness of unbalancing the workload per machine in certain types of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) configured as pooled machines of unequal sizes. Studies are conducted to examine the applicability of following an objective to unbalance workloads when solving the FMS planning problems of selecting part types to be machined together and determining their production ratios. Simulation is used to compare unbalancing and balancing on realistic, detailed models of flexible flow system (FFSs). The experiments are constructed to evaluate the impact of operational factors such as blocking, transportation, buffer utilizations, fixture requirements of various types, and different workload distributions among the machine types. The research results indicate that the aggregate and theoretically optimal unbalanced workloads provided by Stecke and Solberg (1981, 1985) using a closed queueing network model can be appropriate in a realistic FMS. Production rate and system and machine utilizations can all be higher when unbalancing workloads in systems of pooled machines of unequal sizes. It is also observed that: (1) system performance in terms of system utilization or production rate is sensitive to the appropriate number of pallets in the system, when either unbalancing or balancing; and (2) unbalanced part mix ratios conversely can lead to balanced machine utilizations among unequally sized pooled machine types. Overall system utilization seems to be more sensitive to the number of pallets in the system when unbalancing than when balancing.     Effective Scheduling of Multi-Load Automated Guided Vehicle in Spinning Mill: A Case Study

    In the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), where material processing is carried out in the form of tasks from one department to another, the use of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) is significant. The application of multiple-load AGVs can be understood to boost FMS throughput by multiple orders of magnitude. For the transportation of materials and items inside a warehouse or manufacturing plant, an AGV, a mobile robot, offers extraordinary industrial capabilities. The technique of allocating AGVs to tasks while taking into account the cost and time of operations is known as AGV scheduling. Most research has exclusively addressed single-objective optimization, whereas multi-objective scheduling of AGVs is a complex combinatorial process without a single solution, in contrast to single-objective scheduling. This paper presents the integrated Local Search Probability-based Memetic Water Cycle (LSPM-WC) algorithm using a spinning mill as a case study. The scheduling model’s goal is to maximize machine efficiency. The scheduling of the statistical tests demonstrated the applicability of the proposed model in lowering the makespan and fitness values. The mean AGV operating efficiency was higher than the other estimated models, and the LSPM-WC surpassed the different algorithms to produce the best result

    A study of FMS part type selection approaches for short-term production planning

    This research compares seven approaches from the literature to the selection of part types for simultaneous production over the next time horizon. A flexible approach to the selection of part types and the simultaneous determination of their mix ratios so as to balance aggregate machine workloads is presented. Constraints on tool magazine capacity are considered. Simulation studies are conducted on realistic, detailed models of flexible flow systems (FFSs) configured as pooled machines of equal sizes.     Simulation of production scheduling in manufacturing systems

    Research into production scheduling environments has been primarily concerned with developing local priority rules for selecting jobs from a queue to be processed on a set of individual machines. Most of the research deals with the scheduling problems in terms of the evaluation of priority rules with respect to given criteria. These criteria have a direct effect on the production cost, such as mean make-span, flow-time, job lateness, m-process inventory and machine idle time. The project under study consists of the following two phases. The first is to deal with the development of computer models for the flow-shop problem, which obtain the optimum make-span and near-optimum solutions for the well-used criteria in the production scheduling priority rules. The second is to develop experimental analysis using a simulation technique, for the two main manufacturing systems, 1. Job-shop 2. Flexible Manufacturing System The two manufacturing types were investigated under the following conditions i. Dynamic problem conditions ii. Different operation time distributions iii. Different shop loads iv. Seven replications per experiment with different streams of random number v. The approximately steady state point for each replication was obtained. In the FMS, the material handling system used was the automated guided Vehicles (AGVs), buffer station and load/ unload area were also used. The aim of these analyses is to deal with the effectiveness of the priority rules on the selected criteria performance. The SIMAN software simulation was used for these studies
