Massive MIMO performance evaluation based on measured propagation data
Massive MIMO, also known as very-large MIMO or large-scale antenna systems,
is a new technique that potentially can offer large network capacities in
multi-user scenarios. With a massive MIMO system, we consider the case where a
base station equipped with a large number of antenna elements simultaneously
serves multiple single-antenna users in the same time-frequency resource. So
far, investigations are mostly based on theoretical channels with independent
and identically distributed (i.i.d.) complex Gaussian coefficients, i.e.,
i.i.d. Rayleigh channels. Here, we investigate how massive MIMO performs in
channels measured in real propagation environments. Channel measurements were
performed at 2.6 GHz using a virtual uniform linear array (ULA) which has a
physically large aperture, and a practical uniform cylindrical array (UCA)
which is more compact in size, both having 128 antenna ports. Based on
measurement data, we illustrate channel behavior of massive MIMO in three
representative propagation conditions, and evaluate the corresponding
performance. The investigation shows that the measured channels, for both array
types, allow us to achieve performance close to that in i.i.d. Rayleigh
channels. It is concluded that in real propagation environments we have
characteristics that can allow for efficient use of massive MIMO, i.e., the
theoretical advantages of this new technology can also be harvested in real
channels.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, 201
ON THE DEGREES OF FREEDOM OF THE RELAY X-CHANNEL
Interference is a principal source of capacity limitations in today's multi-access multi-user wireless systems. Despite the fact that the capacity of interference channels is still an unsolved problem, the research community has already established a substantial work towards this goal. In effort to provide alternative attainable expressions for performance limits in interference channels, the concept of the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) has been introduced. DoF describes network capacity in terms of the number of maximum possible simultaneous interference-free streams.
X-channel is defined where there are two transmitters, two receivers and each transmitter has an independent message for each receiver. Interference channel, broadcast channel and the multiple access channels are special cases of the X-channel. In this thesis, we further investigate the effect of a relay on the DoF of a single input single output (SISO) X-channel with no channel state information at transmitters (CSIT). In contrast to previous work, which has focused on two antennas at the relay to achieve the optimal 4/3 DoF, we focus on the case of a single antenna half duplex relay. We show that with a single antenna relay and delayed output feedback, the upper bound of 4/3 DoF for the X-channel is achievable and we provide the achievability scheme.
We revisit the previously studied case of single antenna relay in the more practical setting of alternating CSIT. We show that the optimal 4/3 DoF achievability does not mandate full CSIT availability. For the case of partial alternating CSIT availability at the relay transmitters, we propose a scheme that can achieve the optimal 4/3 DoF and we deduce the minimum CSIT availability for the proposed scheme to achieve optimality
Estimation Diversity and Energy Efficiency in Distributed Sensing
Distributed estimation based on measurements from multiple wireless sensors
is investigated. It is assumed that a group of sensors observe the same
quantity in independent additive observation noises with possibly different
variances. The observations are transmitted using amplify-and-forward (analog)
transmissions over non-ideal fading wireless channels from the sensors to a
fusion center, where they are combined to generate an estimate of the observed
quantity. Assuming that the Best Linear Unbiased Estimator (BLUE) is used by
the fusion center, the equal-power transmission strategy is first discussed,
where the system performance is analyzed by introducing the concept of
estimation outage and estimation diversity, and it is shown that there is an
achievable diversity gain on the order of the number of sensors. The optimal
power allocation strategies are then considered for two cases: minimum
distortion under power constraints; and minimum power under distortion
constraints. In the first case, it is shown that by turning off bad sensors,
i.e., sensors with bad channels and bad observation quality, adaptive power
gain can be achieved without sacrificing diversity gain. Here, the adaptive
power gain is similar to the array gain achieved in Multiple-Input
Single-Output (MISO) multi-antenna systems when channel conditions are known to
the transmitter. In the second case, the sum power is minimized under
zero-outage estimation distortion constraint, and some related energy
efficiency issues in sensor networks are discussed.Comment: To appear at IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Multi-User Holographic MIMO Surfaces: Channel Modeling and Spectral Efficiency Analysis
The multi-user Holographic Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output Surface
(MU-HMIMOS) paradigm, which is capable of realizing large continuous apertures
with minimal power consumption, has been recently considered as an
energyefficient solution for future wireless networks, offering increased
flexibility in impacting electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation according to the
desired communication, localization, and sensing objectives. The tractable
channel modeling in MU-HMIMOS wireless systems is one of the most critical
research challenges, mainly due to the coupling effect induced by the
excessively large number of closely spaced patch antennas. In this paper, we
focus on this challenge for the downlink of multi-user MIMO communications and
extend an EM-compliant channel model to multiuser case, which is expressed in
the wavenumber domain using the Fourier plane wave approximation. Based on the
presented channel model, we investigate the spectral efficiency of maximumratio
transmission and Zero-Forcing (ZF) precoding schemes. We also introduce a novel
hardware efficient ZF precoder, leveraging Neumann series (NS) expansion to
replace the required matrix inversion operation, which is very hard to be
computed in the conventional way due to the extremely large number of patch
antennas in the envisioned MU-HMIMOS communication systems. In comparison with
the conventional independent and identical Rayleigh fading channels that ignore
antenna coupling effects, the proposed EM-compliant channel model captures the
mutual couplings induced by the very small antenna spacing. Our extensive
performance evaluation results demonstrate that our theoretical performance
expressions approximate sufficiently well ..
Efficient Downlink Channel Reconstruction for FDD Multi-Antenna Systems
In this paper, we propose an efficient downlink channel reconstruction scheme
for a frequency-division-duplex multi-antenna system by utilizing uplink
channel state information combined with limited feedback. Based on the spatial
reciprocity in a wireless channel, the downlink channel is reconstructed by
using frequency-independent parameters. We first estimate the gains, delays,
and angles during uplink sounding. The gains are then refined through downlink
training and sent back to the base station (BS). With limited overhead, the
refinement can substantially improve the accuracy of the downlink channel
reconstruction. The BS can then reconstruct the downlink channel with the
uplink-estimated delays and angles and the downlink-refined gains. We also
introduce and extend the Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit (NOMP)
algorithm to detect the delays and gains in a multi-antenna multi-subcarrier
condition. The results of our analysis show that the extended NOMP algorithm
achieves high estimation accuracy. Simulations and over-the-air tests are
performed to assess the performance of the efficient downlink channel
reconstruction scheme. The results show that the reconstructed channel is close
to the practical channel and that the accuracy is enhanced when the number of
BS antennas increases, thereby highlighting that the promising application of
the proposed scheme in large-scale antenna array systems
