Approximation Algorithms for Union and Intersection Covering Problems
In a classical covering problem, we are given a set of requests that we need
to satisfy (fully or partially), by buying a subset of items at minimum cost.
For example, in the k-MST problem we want to find the cheapest tree spanning at
least k nodes of an edge-weighted graph. Here nodes and edges represent
requests and items, respectively.
In this paper, we initiate the study of a new family of multi-layer covering
problems. Each such problem consists of a collection of h distinct instances of
a standard covering problem (layers), with the constraint that all layers share
the same set of requests. We identify two main subfamilies of these problems: -
in a union multi-layer problem, a request is satisfied if it is satisfied in at
least one layer; - in an intersection multi-layer problem, a request is
satisfied if it is satisfied in all layers. To see some natural applications,
consider both generalizations of k-MST. Union k-MST can model a problem where
we are asked to connect a set of users to at least one of two communication
networks, e.g., a wireless and a wired network. On the other hand, intersection
k-MST can formalize the problem of connecting a subset of users to both
electricity and water.
We present a number of hardness and approximation results for union and
intersection versions of several standard optimization problems: MST, Steiner
tree, set cover, facility location, TSP, and their partial covering variants
A Novel SAT-Based Approach to the Task Graph Cost-Optimal Scheduling Problem
The Task Graph Cost-Optimal Scheduling Problem consists in scheduling a certain number of interdependent tasks onto a set of heterogeneous processors (characterized by idle and running rates per time unit), minimizing the cost of the entire process. This paper provides a novel formulation for this scheduling puzzle, in which an optimal solution is computed through a sequence of Binate Covering Problems, hinged within a Bounded Model Checking paradigm. In this approach, each covering instance, providing a min-cost trace for a given schedule depth, can be solved with several strategies, resorting to Minimum-Cost Satisfiability solvers or Pseudo-Boolean Optimization tools. Unfortunately, all direct resolution methods show very low efficiency and scalability. As a consequence, we introduce a specialized method to solve the same sequence of problems, based on a traditional all-solution SAT solver. This approach follows the "circuit cofactoring" strategy, as it exploits a powerful technique to capture a large set of solutions for any new SAT counter-example. The overall method is completed with a branch-and-bound heuristic which evaluates lower and upper bounds of the schedule length, to reduce the state space that has to be visited. Our results show that the proposed strategy significantly improves the blind binate covering schema, and it outperforms general purpose state-of-the-art tool
Approximation Algorithms for Covering/Packing Integer Programs
Given matrices A and B and vectors a, b, c and d, all with non-negative
entries, we consider the problem of computing min {c.x: x in Z^n_+, Ax > a, Bx
< b, x < d}. We give a bicriteria-approximation algorithm that, given epsilon
in (0, 1], finds a solution of cost O(ln(m)/epsilon^2) times optimal, meeting
the covering constraints (Ax > a) and multiplicity constraints (x < d), and
satisfying Bx < (1 + epsilon)b + beta, where beta is the vector of row sums
beta_i = sum_j B_ij. Here m denotes the number of rows of A.
This gives an O(ln m)-approximation algorithm for CIP -- minimum-cost
covering integer programs with multiplicity constraints, i.e., the special case
when there are no packing constraints Bx < b. The previous best approximation
ratio has been O(ln(max_j sum_i A_ij)) since 1982. CIP contains the set cover
problem as a special case, so O(ln m)-approximation is the best possible unless

Minimum-Cost Coverage of Point Sets by Disks
We consider a class of geometric facility location problems in which the goal
is to determine a set X of disks given by their centers (t_j) and radii (r_j)
that cover a given set of demand points Y in the plane at the smallest possible
cost. We consider cost functions of the form sum_j f(r_j), where f(r)=r^alpha
is the cost of transmission to radius r. Special cases arise for alpha=1 (sum
of radii) and alpha=2 (total area); power consumption models in wireless
network design often use an exponent alpha>2. Different scenarios arise
according to possible restrictions on the transmission centers t_j, which may
be constrained to belong to a given discrete set or to lie on a line, etc. We
obtain several new results, including (a) exact and approximation algorithms
for selecting transmission points t_j on a given line in order to cover demand
points Y in the plane; (b) approximation algorithms (and an algebraic
intractability result) for selecting an optimal line on which to place
transmission points to cover Y; (c) a proof of NP-hardness for a discrete set
of transmission points in the plane and any fixed alpha>1; and (d) a
polynomial-time approximation scheme for the problem of computing a minimum
cost covering tour (MCCT), in which the total cost is a linear combination of
the transmission cost for the set of disks and the length of a tour/path that

Non-uniform Geometric Set Cover and Scheduling on Multiple Machines
We consider the following general scheduling problem studied recently by
Moseley. There are jobs, all released at time , where job has size
and an associated arbitrary non-decreasing cost function of its
completion time. The goal is to find a schedule on machines with minimum
total cost. We give an approximation for the problem, improving upon the
previous bound ( is the maximum to minimum size ratio),
and resolving the open question of Moseley.
We first note that the scheduling problem can be reduced to a clean geometric
set cover problem where points on a line with arbitrary demands, must be
covered by a minimum cost collection of given intervals with non-uniform
capacity profiles. Unfortunately, current techniques for such problems based on
knapsack cover inequalities and low union complexity, completely lose the
geometric structure in the non-uniform capacity profiles and incur at least an
loss.
To this end, we consider general covering problems with non-uniform
capacities, and give a new method to handle capacities in a way that completely
preserves their geometric structure. This allows us to use sophisticated
geometric ideas in a black-box way to avoid the loss in
previous approaches. In addition to the scheduling problem above, we use this
approach to obtain or inverse Ackermann type bounds for several basic
capacitated covering problems
Robust capacitated trees and networks with uniform demands
We are interested in the design of robust (or resilient) capacitated rooted
Steiner networks in case of terminals with uniform demands. Formally, we are
given a graph, capacity and cost functions on the edges, a root, a subset of
nodes called terminals, and a bound k on the number of edge failures. We first
study the problem where k = 1 and the network that we want to design must be a
tree covering the root and the terminals: we give complexity results and
propose models to optimize both the cost of the tree and the number of
terminals disconnected from the root in the worst case of an edge failure,
while respecting the capacity constraints on the edges. Second, we consider the
problem of computing a minimum-cost survivable network, i.e., a network that
covers the root and terminals even after the removal of any k edges, while
still respecting the capacity constraints on the edges. We also consider the
possibility of protecting a given number of edges. We propose three different
formulations: a cut-set based formulation, a flow based one, and a bilevel one
(with an attacker and a defender). We propose algorithms to solve each
formulation and compare their efficiency
