    A Survey on Approximation in Parameterized Complexity: Hardness and Algorithms

    Parameterization and approximation are two popular ways of coping with NP-hard problems. More recently, the two have also been combined to derive many interesting results. We survey developments in the area both from the algorithmic and hardness perspectives, with emphasis on new techniques and potential future research directions

    The Maximum Binary Tree Problem

    We introduce and investigate the approximability of the maximum binary tree problem (MBT) in directed and undirected graphs. The goal in MBT is to find a maximum-sized binary tree in a given graph. MBT is a natural variant of the well-studied longest path problem, since both can be viewed as finding a maximum-sized tree of bounded degree in a given graph. The connection to longest path motivates the study of MBT in directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), since the longest path problem is solvable efficiently in DAGs. In contrast, we show that MBT in DAGs is in fact hard: it has no efficient exp(-O(log n/ log log n))-approximation algorithm under the exponential time hypothesis, where n is the number of vertices in the input graph. In undirected graphs, we show that MBT has no efficient exp(-O(log^0.63 n))-approximation under the exponential time hypothesis. Our inapproximability results rely on self-improving reductions and structural properties of binary trees. We also show constant-factor inapproximability assuming P ? NP. In addition to inapproximability results, we present algorithmic results along two different flavors: (1) We design a randomized algorithm to verify if a given directed graph on n vertices contains a binary tree of size k in 2^k poly(n) time. (2) Motivated by the longest heapable subsequence problem, introduced by Byers, Heeringa, Mitzenmacher, and Zervas, ANALCO 2011, which is equivalent to MBT in permutation DAGs, we design efficient algorithms for MBT in bipartite permutation graphs

    Cluster Before You Hallucinate: Approximating Node-Capacitated Network Design and Energy Efficient Routing

    We consider circuit routing with an objective of minimizing energy, in a network of routers that are speed scalable and that may be shutdown when idle. We consider both multicast routing and unicast routing. It is known that this energy minimization problem can be reduced to a capacitated flow network design problem, where vertices have a common capacity but arbitrary costs, and the goal is to choose a minimum cost collection of vertices whose induced subgraph will support the specified flow requirements. For the multicast (single-sink) capacitated design problem we give a polynomial-time algorithm that is O(log^3n)-approximate with O(log^4 n) congestion. This translates back to a O(log ^(4{\alpha}+3) n)-approximation for the multicast energy-minimization routing problem, where {\alpha} is the polynomial exponent in the dynamic power used by a router. For the unicast (multicommodity) capacitated design problem we give a polynomial-time algorithm that is O(log^5 n)-approximate with O(log^12 n) congestion, which translates back to a O(log^(12{\alpha}+5) n)-approximation for the unicast energy-minimization routing problem.Comment: 22 pages (full version of STOC 2014 paper

    Tight bounds for planar strongly connected Steiner subgraph with fixed number of terminals (and extensions)

    (see paper for full abstract) Given a vertex-weighted directed graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E) and a set T={t1,t2,tk}T=\{t_1, t_2, \ldots t_k\} of kk terminals, the objective of the SCSS problem is to find a vertex set HVH\subseteq V of minimum weight such that G[H]G[H] contains a titjt_{i}\rightarrow t_j path for each iji\neq j. The problem is NP-hard, but Feldman and Ruhl [FOCS '99; SICOMP '06] gave a novel nO(k)n^{O(k)} algorithm for the SCSS problem, where nn is the number of vertices in the graph and kk is the number of terminals. We explore how much easier the problem becomes on planar directed graphs: - Our main algorithmic result is a 2O(k)nO(k)2^{O(k)}\cdot n^{O(\sqrt{k})} algorithm for planar SCSS, which is an improvement of a factor of O(k)O(\sqrt{k}) in the exponent over the algorithm of Feldman and Ruhl. - Our main hardness result is a matching lower bound for our algorithm: we show that planar SCSS does not have an f(k)no(k)f(k)\cdot n^{o(\sqrt{k})} algorithm for any computable function ff, unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) fails. The following additional results put our upper and lower bounds in context: - In general graphs, we cannot hope for such a dramatic improvement over the nO(k)n^{O(k)} algorithm of Feldman and Ruhl: assuming ETH, SCSS in general graphs does not have an f(k)no(k/logk)f(k)\cdot n^{o(k/\log k)} algorithm for any computable function ff. - Feldman and Ruhl generalized their nO(k)n^{O(k)} algorithm to the more general Directed Steiner Network (DSN) problem; here the task is to find a subgraph of minimum weight such that for every source sis_i there is a path to the corresponding terminal tit_i. We show that, assuming ETH, there is no f(k)no(k)f(k)\cdot n^{o(k)} time algorithm for DSN on acyclic planar graphs.Comment: To appear in SICOMP. Extended abstract in SODA 2014.     Probabilistic methods in combinatorial and stochastic optimization

Packing/Covering problems, we prove upper and lower bounds on the adaptivity gap depending on the dimension. We also design polynomial-time algorithms achieving near-optimal approximation guarantees with respect to the adaptive optimum. Finally, we prove complexity-theoretic results regarding optimal adaptive policies. These results are based on a connection between adaptive policies and Arthur-Merlin games which yields PSPACE-hardness results for numerous questions regarding adaptive policies.In this thesis we study a variety of combinatorial problems with inherent randomness. In the first part of the thesis, we study the possibility of covering the solutions of an optimization problem on random subgraphs. The motivation for this approach is a situation where an optimization problem needs to be solved repeatedly for random instances. Then we seek a pre-processing stage which would speed-up subsequent queries by finding a fixed sparse subgraph covering the solution for a random subgraph with high probability. The first problem that we investigate is the minimum spanning tree. Our essential result regarding this problem is that for every graph with edge weights, there is a set of O(n log n) edges which contains the minimum spanning tree of a random subgraph with high probability. More generally, we extend this result to matroids. Further, we consider optimization problems based on the shortest path metric and we find covering sets of size 0(n(Ì1+2/c) log2Ì n) that approximate the shortest path metric of a random vertex-induced subgraph within a constant factor of c with high probability. In the second part, we turn to a model of stochastic optimization, where a solution is built sequentially by selecting a collection of "items". We distinguish between adaptive and non-adaptive strategies, where adaptivity means being able to perceive the precise characteristics of chosen items and use this knowledge in subsequent decisions. The benefit of adaptivity is our central concept which we investigate for a variety of specific problems. For the Stochastic Knapsack problem, we prove constant upper and lower bounds on the "adaptivity gap" between optimal adaptive and non-adaptive policies. Abstract In recent years we have seen a vast increase in the amount of protein-protein interaction data. Study of the resulting biological networks can provide us a better understanding of the processes taking place within a cell. In this work we consider a graph orientation problem arising in the study of biological networks. Given an undirected graph and a list of ordered source-target pairs, the goal is to orient the graph so that a maximum number of pairs will admit a directed path from the source to the target. We show that the problem is NP-hard and hard to approximate to within a constant ratio. We then study restrictions of the problem to various graph classes, and provide an O(log n) approximation algorithm for the general case. We show that this algorithm achieves very tight approximation ratios in practice and is able to infer edge directions with high accuracy on both simulated and real network data
