Detect-and-forward relaying aided cooperative spatial modulation for wireless networks
A novel detect-and-forward (DeF) relaying aided cooperative SM scheme is proposed, which is capable of striking a flexible tradeoff in terms of the achievable bit error ratio (BER), complexity and unequal error protection (UEP). More specifically, SM is invoked at the source node (SN) and the information bit stream is divided into two different sets: the antenna index-bits (AI-bits) as well as the amplitude and phase modulation-bits (APM-bits). By exploiting the different importance of the AI-bits and the APM-bits in SM detection, we propose three low-complexity, yet powerful relay protocols, namely the partial, the hybrid and the hierarchical modulation (HM) based DeF relaying schemes. These schemes determine the most appropriate number of bits to be re-modulated by carefully considering their potential benefits and then assigning a specific modulation scheme for relaying the message. As a further benefit, the employment of multiple radio frequency (RF) chains and the requirement of tight inter-relay synchronization (IRS) can be avoided. Moreover, by exploiting the benefits of our low-complexity relaying protocols and our inter-element interference (IEI) model, a low-complexity maximum-likelihood (ML) detector is proposed for jointly detecting the signal received both via the source-destination (SD) and relay-destination (RD) links. Additionally, an upper bound of the BER is derived for our DeF-SM scheme. Our numerical results show that the bound is asymptotically tight in the high-SNR region and the proposed schemes provide beneficial system performance improvements compared to the conventional MIMO schemes in an identical cooperative scenario.<br/
Analysis of Coverage Region for MIMO Relay Network with Multiple Cooperative DF-Relays
We study and analyze coverage region in MIMO communication systems for a
multiple-relay network with decode-and-forward (DF) strategy at the relays.
Assuming that there is a line-of-sight (LOS) propagation environment for
source-relay channels and channel state information is available at receivers
(CSIR), we consider the objective of maximizing coverage region for a given
transmission rate and show numerically the significant effect of propagation
environment on capacity bounds, optimal relay location and coverage region.
Also, we study the situation in which two adjacent relays cooperate in
transmission signals to the destination and show analytically that the coverage
region is extended compared to noncooperative scenario.Comment: Accepted for publication in International Symposium on Wireless

Design guidelines for spatial modulation
A new class of low-complexity, yet energyefficient Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission techniques, namely the family of Spatial Modulation (SM) aided MIMOs (SM-MIMO) has emerged. These systems are capable of exploiting the spatial dimensions (i.e. the antenna indices) as an additional dimension invoked for transmitting information, apart from the traditional Amplitude and Phase Modulation (APM). SM is capable of efficiently operating in diverse MIMO configurations in the context of future communication systems. It constitutes a promising transmission candidate for large-scale MIMO design and for the indoor optical wireless communication whilst relying on a single-Radio Frequency (RF) chain. Moreover, SM may also be viewed as an entirely new hybrid modulation scheme, which is still in its infancy. This paper aims for providing a general survey of the SM design framework as well as of its intrinsic limits. In particular, we focus our attention on the associated transceiver design, on spatial constellation optimization, on link adaptation techniques, on distributed/ cooperative protocol design issues, and on their meritorious variants
Analysis and Ad-hoc Networking Solutions for Cooperative Relaying Systems
Users of mobile networks are increasingly demanding higher data rates from
their service providers. To cater to this demand, various signal processing
and networking algorithms have been proposed. Amongst them the multiple
input multiple output (MIMO) scheme of wireless communications is one of
the most promising options. However, due to certain physical restrictions,
e.g., size, it is not possible for many devices to have multiple antennas
on them. Also, most of the devices currently in use are single-antenna
devices. Such devices can make use of the MIMO scheme by employing
cooperative MIMO methods. This involves nearby nodes utilizing the antennas
of each other to form virtual antenna arrays (VAAs). Nodes with limited
communication ranges can further employ multi-hopping to be able to
communicate with far away nodes. However, an ad-hoc communications scheme
with cooperative MIMO multi-hopping can be challenging to implement because
of its de-centralized nature and lack of a centralized controling entity
such as a base-station. This thesis looks at methods to alleviate the
problems faced by such networks. In the first part of this thesis, we look,
analytically, at the relaying scheme under consideration and derive closed
form expressions for certain performance measures (signal to noise ratio
(SNR), symbol error rate (SER), bit error rate (BER), and capacity) for the
co-located and cooperative multiple antenna schemes in different relaying
configurations (amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward) and different
antenna configurations (single input single output (SISO), single input
multiple output (SIMO) and MIMO). These expressions show the importance of
reducing the number of hops in multi-hop communications to achieve a better
performance. We can also see the impact of different antenna configurations
and different transmit powers on the number of hops through these
simplified expressions. We also look at the impact of synchronization errors
on the cooperative MIMO communications scheme and derive a lower bound of
the SINR and an expression for the BER in the high SNR regime. These
expressions can help the network designers to ensure that the quality of
service (QoS) is satisfied even in the worst-case scenarios. In the second
part of the thesis we present some algorithms developed by us to help the
set-up and functioning of cluster-based ad-hoc networks that employ
cooperative relaying. We present a clustering algorithm that takes into
account the battery status of nodes in order to ensure a longer network
life-time. We also present a routing mechanism that is tailored for use in
cooperative MIMO multi-hop relaying. The benefits of both schemes are shown
through simulations.A method to handle data in ad-hoc networks using
distributed hash tables (DHTs) is also presented. Moreover, we also present
a physical layer security mechanism for multi-hop relaying. We also analyze
the physical layer security mechanism for the cooperative MIMO scheme. This
analysis shows that the cooperative MIMO scheme is more beneficial than
co-located MIMO in terms of the information theoretic limits of the
physical layer security.ï»żNutzer mobiler Netzwerke fordern zunehmend höhere Datenraten von ihren

Timing and Carrier Synchronization in Wireless Communication Systems: A Survey and Classification of Research in the Last 5 Years
Timing and carrier synchronization is a fundamental requirement for any wireless communication system to work properly. Timing synchronization is the process by which a receiver node determines the correct instants of time at which to sample the incoming signal. Carrier synchronization is the process by which a receiver adapts the frequency and phase of its local carrier oscillator with those of the received signal. In this paper, we survey the literature over the last 5 years (2010â2014) and present a comprehensive literature review and classification of the recent research progress in achieving timing and carrier synchronization in single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), cooperative relaying, and multiuser/multicell interference networks. Considering both single-carrier and multi-carrier communication systems, we survey and categorize the timing and carrier synchronization techniques proposed for the different communication systems focusing on the system model assumptions for synchronization, the synchronization challenges, and the state-of-the-art synchronization solutions and their limitations. Finally, we envision some future research directions
Distributed Adaptation Techniques for Connected Vehicles
In this PhD dissertation, we propose distributed adaptation mechanisms for connected vehicles to deal with the connectivity challenges. To understand the system behavior of the solutions for connected vehicles, we first need to characterize the operational environment. Therefore, we devised a large scale fading model for various link types, including point-to-point vehicular communications and multi-hop connected vehicles. We explored two small scale fading models to define the characteristics of multi-hop connected vehicles. Taking our research into multi-hop connected vehicles one step further, we propose selective information relaying to avoid message congestion due to redundant messages received by the relay vehicle. Results show that the proposed mechanism reduces messaging load by up to 75% without sacrificing environmental awareness. Once we define the channel characteristics, we propose a distributed congestion control algorithm to solve the messaging overhead on the channels as the next research interest of this dissertation. We propose a combined transmit power and message rate adaptation for connected vehicles. The proposed algorithm increases the environmental awareness and achieves the application requirements by considering highly dynamic network characteristics. Both power and rate adaptation mechanisms are performed jointly to avoid one result affecting the other negatively. Results prove that the proposed algorithm can increase awareness by 20% while keeping the channel load and interference at almost the same level as well as improve the average message rate by 18%. As the last step of this dissertation, distributed cooperative dynamic spectrum access technique is proposed to solve the channel overhead and the limited resources issues. The adaptive energy detection threshold, which is used to decide whether the channel is busy, is optimized in this work by using a computationally efficient numerical approach. Each vehicle evaluates the available channels by voting on the information received from one-hop neighbors. An interdisciplinary approach referred to as entropy-based weighting is used for defining the neighbor credibility. Once the vehicle accesses the channel, we propose a decision mechanism for channel switching that is inspired by the optimal flower selection process employed by bumblebees foraging. Experimental results show that by using the proposed distributed cooperative spectrum sensing mechanism, spectrum detection error converges to zero
