Approximately Counting Embeddings into Random Graphs
Let H be a graph, and let C_H(G) be the number of (subgraph isomorphic)
copies of H contained in a graph G. We investigate the fundamental problem of
estimating C_H(G). Previous results cover only a few specific instances of this
general problem, for example, the case when H has degree at most one
(monomer-dimer problem). In this paper, we present the first general subcase of
the subgraph isomorphism counting problem which is almost always efficiently
approximable. The results rely on a new graph decomposition technique.
Informally, the decomposition is a labeling of the vertices such that every
edge is between vertices with different labels and for every vertex all
neighbors with a higher label have identical labels. The labeling implicitly
generates a sequence of bipartite graphs which permits us to break the problem
of counting embeddings of large subgraphs into that of counting embeddings of
small subgraphs. Using this method, we present a simple randomized algorithm
for the counting problem. For all decomposable graphs H and all graphs G, the
algorithm is an unbiased estimator. Furthermore, for all graphs H having a
decomposition where each of the bipartite graphs generated is small and almost
all graphs G, the algorithm is a fully polynomial randomized approximation
scheme.
We show that the graph classes of H for which we obtain a fully polynomial
randomized approximation scheme for almost all G includes graphs of degree at
most two, bounded-degree forests, bounded-length grid graphs, subdivision of
bounded-degree graphs, and major subclasses of outerplanar graphs,
series-parallel graphs and planar graphs, whereas unbounded-length grid graphs

Linear-Space Approximate Distance Oracles for Planar, Bounded-Genus, and Minor-Free Graphs
A (1 + eps)-approximate distance oracle for a graph is a data structure that
supports approximate point-to-point shortest-path-distance queries. The most
relevant measures for a distance-oracle construction are: space, query time,
and preprocessing time. There are strong distance-oracle constructions known
for planar graphs (Thorup, JACM'04) and, subsequently, minor-excluded graphs
(Abraham and Gavoille, PODC'06). However, these require Omega(eps^{-1} n lg n)
space for n-node graphs. We argue that a very low space requirement is
essential. Since modern computer architectures involve hierarchical memory
(caches, primary memory, secondary memory), a high memory requirement in effect
may greatly increase the actual running time. Moreover, we would like data
structures that can be deployed on small mobile devices, such as handhelds,
which have relatively small primary memory. In this paper, for planar graphs,
bounded-genus graphs, and minor-excluded graphs we give distance-oracle
constructions that require only O(n) space. The big O hides only a fixed
constant, independent of \epsilon and independent of genus or size of an
excluded minor. The preprocessing times for our distance oracle are also faster
than those for the previously known constructions. For planar graphs, the
preprocessing time is O(n lg^2 n). However, our constructions have slower query
times. For planar graphs, the query time is O(eps^{-2} lg^2 n). For our
linear-space results, we can in fact ensure, for any delta > 0, that the space
required is only 1 + delta times the space required just to represent the graph
itself
Travelling on Graphs with Small Highway Dimension
We study the Travelling Salesperson (TSP) and the Steiner Tree problem (STP)
in graphs of low highway dimension. This graph parameter was introduced by
Abraham et al. [SODA 2010] as a model for transportation networks, on which TSP
and STP naturally occur for various applications in logistics. It was
previously shown [Feldmann et al. ICALP 2015] that these problems admit a
quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme (QPTAS) on graphs of constant
highway dimension. We demonstrate that a significant improvement is possible in
the special case when the highway dimension is 1, for which we present a
fully-polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS). We also prove that STP is
weakly NP-hard for these restricted graphs. For TSP we show NP-hardness for
graphs of highway dimension 6, which answers an open problem posed in [Feldmann
et al. ICALP 2015]
Optimal Online Edge Coloring of Planar Graphs with Advice
Using the framework of advice complexity, we study the amount of knowledge
about the future that an online algorithm needs to color the edges of a graph
optimally, i.e., using as few colors as possible. For graphs of maximum degree
, it follows from Vizing's Theorem that bits of
advice suffice to achieve optimality, where is the number of edges. We show
that for graphs of bounded degeneracy (a class of graphs including e.g. trees
and planar graphs), only bits of advice are needed to compute an optimal
solution online, independently of how large is. On the other hand, we
show that bits of advice are necessary just to achieve a
competitive ratio better than that of the best deterministic online algorithm
without advice. Furthermore, we consider algorithms which use a fixed number of
advice bits per edge (our algorithm for graphs of bounded degeneracy belongs to
this class of algorithms). We show that for bipartite graphs, any such
algorithm must use at least bits of advice to achieve

Analysis of Farthest Point Sampling for Approximating Geodesics in a Graph
A standard way to approximate the distance between any two vertices and
on a mesh is to compute, in the associated graph, a shortest path from
to that goes through one of sources, which are well-chosen vertices.
Precomputing the distance between each of the sources to all vertices of
the graph yields an efficient computation of approximate distances between any
two vertices. One standard method for choosing sources, which has been used
extensively and successfully for isometry-invariant surface processing, is the
so-called Farthest Point Sampling (FPS), which starts with a random vertex as
the first source, and iteratively selects the farthest vertex from the already
selected sources.
In this paper, we analyze the stretch factor of
approximate geodesics computed using FPS, which is the maximum, over all pairs
of distinct vertices, of their approximated distance over their geodesic
distance in the graph. We show that can be bounded in terms
of the minimal value of the stretch factor obtained using an
optimal placement of sources as , where is the ratio of the lengths of
the longest and the shortest edges of the graph. This provides some evidence
explaining why farthest point sampling has been used successfully for
isometry-invariant shape processing. Furthermore, we show that it is
