Scalable Multiagent Coordination with Distributed Online Open Loop Planning
We propose distributed online open loop planning (DOOLP), a general framework
for online multiagent coordination and decision making under uncertainty. DOOLP
is based on online heuristic search in the space defined by a generative model
of the domain dynamics, which is exploited by agents to simulate and evaluate
the consequences of their potential choices.
We also propose distributed online Thompson sampling (DOTS) as an effective
instantiation of the DOOLP framework. DOTS models sequences of agent choices by
concatenating a number of multiarmed bandits for each agent and uses Thompson
sampling for dealing with action value uncertainty. The Bayesian approach
underlying Thompson sampling allows to effectively model and estimate
uncertainty about (a) own action values and (b) other agents' behavior. This
approach yields a principled and statistically sound solution to the
exploration-exploitation dilemma when exploring large search spaces with
limited resources.
We implemented DOTS in a smart factory case study with positive empirical
results. We observed effective, robust and scalable planning and coordination
capabilities even when only searching a fraction of the potential search space
Evolving collective behavior in an artificial ecology
Collective behavior refers to coordinated group motion, common to many animals. The dynamics of a group can be seen as a distributed model, each āanimalā applying the same rule set. This study investigates the use of evolved sensory controllers to produce schooling behavior. A set of artificial creatures āliveā in an artificial world with hazards and food. Each creature has a simple artificial neural network brain that controls movement in different situations. A chromosome encodes the network structure and weights, which may be combined using artificial evolution with another chromosome, if a creature should choose to mate. Prey and predators coevolve without an explicit fitness function for schooling to produce sophisticated, nondeterministic, behavior. The work highlights the role of speciesā physiology in understanding behavior and the role of the environment in encouraging the development of sensory systems
A Graph-structured Dataset for Wikipedia Research
Wikipedia is a rich and invaluable source of information. Its central place
on the Web makes it a particularly interesting object of study for scientists.
Researchers from different domains used various complex datasets related to
Wikipedia to study language, social behavior, knowledge organization, and
network theory. While being a scientific treasure, the large size of the
dataset hinders pre-processing and may be a challenging obstacle for potential
new studies. This issue is particularly acute in scientific domains where
researchers may not be technically and data processing savvy. On one hand, the
size of Wikipedia dumps is large. It makes the parsing and extraction of
relevant information cumbersome. On the other hand, the API is straightforward
to use but restricted to a relatively small number of requests. The middle
ground is at the mesoscopic scale when researchers need a subset of Wikipedia
ranging from thousands to hundreds of thousands of pages but there exists no
efficient solution at this scale.
In this work, we propose an efficient data structure to make requests and
access subnetworks of Wikipedia pages and categories. We provide convenient
tools for accessing and filtering viewership statistics or "pagecounts" of
Wikipedia web pages. The dataset organization leverages principles of graph
databases that allows rapid and intuitive access to subgraphs of Wikipedia
articles and categories. The dataset and deployment guidelines are available on
