    Integration of information and communication technology in teaching English among in-service teachers

    The widespread application of information and communications technology (ICT) in the field of education has drawn criticism. This investigation was to discover factors influencing English language teaching (ELT) in-service teachers’ integration of ICT. The sample consists of 1216 in-service teachers who teach English language in China. Four factors are found to influence ELT in-service teachers’ integration of ICT: attitudes, self-efficacy, digital competence, and digital tools use. The findings of the research utilizing the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach demonstrated that all four criteria have a substantial impact on how ICT is integrated by ELT in-service teachers. By considering all the variables that affect ELT in-service instructors, this research offered helpful insights for an effective designs of English language teaching with ICT

    Information and Communication Technology in Education in China: Policies and Practices

    This seminar is co-organised by the Centre for Information Technology in Education (CITE) and Faculty of Education, HKU Current policies and practices in ICT in education in China were developed on the basis of its achievements in the area of instructional technology. Therefore, past policies and implementation strategies in instructional technology provided the foundation for the fast development in the area of ICT in education. This seminar will start with a brief review of the history of ICT in education in China. The current state of development in integration ICT into the school curriculum will be examined from five perspectives: curriculum development, resources development, contemporary distance education, application of information technology and teacher professional development. Finally, the seminar will discuss problems, challenges and strategies for further developments in this area in China.Ms Joy Hu is a Research Fellow at the China National Institute of Educational Research (CNIER). Ms Hu graduated from the Beijing Normal University with a BSc in Biology in 1991. She started her career as a biology teacher and then quickly moved into research on teaching and curriculum/textbook development in science and technology.     Offshore education : offshore education in the wider context of internationalisation and ICT: experiences and examples from Dutch higher education

    This report presents a study on offshore education conducted by a consortium of Dutch higher education researchers and commissioned by the Digital University (DU). The study explored the extent to which Dutch higher education institutions are involved in offering their educational services abroad (offshore education). After thoroughly embedding offshore education in the wider contexts of internationalisation and ICT policies, the study particularly explores the practical experiences with a number of real-life offshore activities of Dutch higher education. As a warm-up to this report, a few interesting cases are briefly touched upon below

    Agricultural information dissemination using ICTs: a review and analysis of information dissemination models in China

    Open Access funded by China Agricultural UniversityOver the last three decades, China’s agriculture sector has been transformed from the traditional to modern practice through the effective deployment of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Information processing and dissemination have played a critical role in this transformation process. Many studies in relation to agriculture information services have been conducted in China, but few of them have attempted to provide a comprehensive review and analysis of different information dissemination models and their applications. This paper aims to review and identify the ICT based information dissemination models in China and to share the knowledge and experience in applying emerging ICTs in disseminating agriculture information to farmers and farm communities to improve productivity and economic, social and environmental sustainability. The paper reviews and analyzes the development stages of China’s agricultural information dissemination systems and different mechanisms for agricultural information service development and operations. Seven ICT-based information dissemination models are identified and discussed. Success cases are presented. The findings provide a useful direction for researchers and practitioners in developing future ICT based information dissemination systems. It is hoped that this paper will also help other developing countries to learn from China’s experience and best practice in their endeavor of applying emerging ICTs in agriculture information dissemination and knowledge transfer

    [Excerpt] The development of knowledge-based economies (KBEs) is both an imperative and an opportunity for developing Asia. It is an imperative to sustain high rates of growth in the future and an opportunity whereby emerging economies can draw from beneficial trending developments that may allow them to move faster to advance in global value chains and in position in world markets. Over the last quarter of a century, driven mostly by cheap labor, developing countries in Asia have seen unprecedented growth rates and contributions to the global economy. Sustaining Asia’s growth trajectory, however, requires developing economies to seek different approaches to economic growth and progress, especially if they aspire to move from the middle-income to the high-income level. KBE is an important platform that can enable them to sustain growth and even accelerate it. It is time for Asia to consolidate and accelerate its pace of growth. Asia is positioned in a unique moment in history with many advantages that can serve as a boost: to name a couple, an expanding middle of the pyramid—Asia is likely to hold 50% of the global middle class and 40% of the global consumer market by 2020; and the growing importance of intra-regional trade within Asia, increasing from 54% in 2001 to 58% in 2011. Many developing economies are well placed to assimilate frontier technologies into their manufacturing environment

    Multinational perspectives on information technology from academia and industry

    As the term \u27information technology\u27 has many meanings for various stakeholders and continues to evolve, this work presents a comprehensive approach for developing curriculum guidelines for rigorous, high quality, bachelor\u27s degree programs in information technology (IT) to prepare successful graduates for a future global technological society. The aim is to address three research questions in the context of IT concerning (1) the educational frameworks relevant for academics and students of IT, (2) the pathways into IT programs, and (3) graduates\u27 preparation for meeting future technologies. The analysis of current trends comes from survey data of IT faculty members and professional IT industry leaders. With these analyses, the IT Model Curricula of CC2005, IT2008, IT2017, extensive literature review, and the multinational insights of the authors into the status of IT, this paper presents a comprehensive overview and discussion of future directions of global IT education toward 2025
