A survey of performance enhancement of transmission control protocol (TCP) in wireless ad hoc networks
This Article is provided by the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund - Copyright @ 2011 Springer OpenTransmission control protocol (TCP), which provides reliable end-to-end data delivery, performs well in traditional wired network environments, while in wireless ad hoc networks, it does not perform well. Compared to wired networks, wireless ad hoc networks have some specific characteristics such as node mobility and a shared medium. Owing to these specific characteristics of wireless ad hoc networks, TCP faces particular problems with, for example, route failure, channel contention and high bit error rates. These factors are responsible for the performance degradation of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. The research community has produced a wide range of proposals to improve the performance of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. This article presents a survey of these proposals (approaches). A classification of TCP improvement proposals for wireless ad hoc networks is presented, which makes it easy to compare the proposals falling under the same category. Tables which summarize the approaches for quick overview are provided. Possible directions for further improvements in this area are suggested in the conclusions. Capacity and coverage of mmWave ad hoc networks
textAd hoc networks provide a flexible, infrastructure-free means to communicate between soldiers in war zones, aid workers in disaster areas, or consumers in device-to-device (D2D) applications. Ad hoc networks, however, are stilled plagued by interference. Communication with millimeter-wave (mmWave) devices offers hope to ad hoc networks through higher bandwidth, reduced interference due to directional antennas, and a lighter interference field due to blockage. This report uses a stochastic geometry approach to characterize the one-way and two-way coverage probability of a mmWave ad hoc network with directional antennas and random blockages. The coverage probability in the presence of noise and both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight interference is analyzed and used to derive the transmission capacity. Several reasonable simplifications are used to derive the transmission capacity. Performance of mmWave is then analyzed in terms of area spectral efficiency and rate coverage. The results show that mmWave networks support larger densities, higher area spectral efficiencies, and better rate coverage compared to microwave ad hoc networks.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Impact of network structure on the capacity of wireless multihop ad hoc communication
As a representative of a complex technological system, so-called wireless
multihop ad hoc communication networks are discussed. They represent an
infrastructure-less generalization of todays wireless cellular phone networks.
Lacking a central control authority, the ad hoc nodes have to coordinate
themselves such that the overall network performs in an optimal way. A
performance indicator is the end-to-end throughput capacity.
Various models, generating differing ad hoc network structure via differing
transmission power assignments, are constructed and characterized. They serve
as input for a generic data traffic simulation as well as some semi-analytic
estimations. The latter reveal that due to the most-critical-node effect the
end-to-end throughput capacity sensitively depends on the underlying network
structure, resulting in differing scaling laws with respect to network size.Comment: 30 pages, to be published in Physica
Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
Being infrastructure-less and without central administration control, wireless ad-hoc networking is playing a more and more important role in extending the coverage of traditional wireless infrastructure (cellular networks, wireless LAN, etc). This book includes state-of the-art techniques and solutions for wireless ad-hoc networks. It focuses on the following topics in ad-hoc networks: vehicular ad-hoc networks, security and caching, TCP in ad-hoc networks and emerging applications. It is targeted to provide network engineers and researchers with design guidelines for large scale wireless ad hoc networks
Distributed Opportunistic Scheduling for MIMO Ad-Hoc Networks
Distributed opportunistic scheduling (DOS) protocols are proposed for
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ad-hoc networks with contention-based
medium access. The proposed scheduling protocols distinguish themselves from
other existing works by their explicit design for system throughput improvement
through exploiting spatial multiplexing and diversity in a {\em distributed}
manner. As a result, multiple links can be scheduled to simultaneously transmit
over the spatial channels formed by transmit/receiver antennas. Taking into
account the tradeoff between feedback requirements and system throughput, we
propose and compare protocols with different levels of feedback information.
Furthermore, in contrast to the conventional random access protocols that
ignore the physical channel conditions of contending links, the proposed
protocols implement a pure threshold policy derived from optimal stopping
theory, i.e. only links with threshold-exceeding channel conditions are allowed
for data transmission. Simulation results confirm that the proposed protocols
can achieve impressive throughput performance by exploiting spatial

Beaconing Approaches in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks: A Survey
A Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is a type of wireless ad hoc network that facilitates
ubiquitous connectivity between vehicles in the absence of fixed infrastructure. Beaconing approaches
is an important research challenge in high mobility vehicular networks with enabling safety applications.
In this article, we perform a survey and a comparative study of state-of-the-art adaptive beaconing
approaches in VANET, that explores the main advantages and drawbacks behind their design. The
survey part of the paper presents a review of existing adaptive beaconing approaches such as adaptive
beacon transmission power, beacon rate adaptation, contention window size adjustment and Hybrid
adaptation beaconing techniques. The comparative study of the paper compares the representatives of
adaptive beaconing approaches in terms of their objective of study, summary of their study, the utilized
simulator and the type of vehicular scenario. Finally, we discussed the open issues and research
