Extended Combinatorial Constructions for Peer-to-peer User-Private Information Retrieval
We consider user-private information retrieval (UPIR), an interesting
alternative to private information retrieval (PIR) introduced by Domingo-Ferrer
et al. In UPIR, the database knows which records have been retrieved, but does
not know the identity of the query issuer. The goal of UPIR is to disguise user
profiles from the database. Domingo-Ferrer et al.\ focus on using a
peer-to-peer community to construct a UPIR scheme, which we term P2P UPIR. In
this paper, we establish a strengthened model for P2P UPIR and clarify the
privacy goals of such schemes using standard terminology from the field of
privacy research. In particular, we argue that any solution providing privacy
against the database should attempt to minimize any corresponding loss of
privacy against other users. We give an analysis of existing schemes, including
a new attack by the database. Finally, we introduce and analyze two new
protocols. Whereas previous work focuses on a special type of combinatorial
design known as a configuration, our protocols make use of more general
designs. This allows for flexibility in protocol set-up, allowing for a choice
between having a dynamic scheme (in which users are permitted to enter and

CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
reclaimID: Secure, Self-Sovereign Identities using Name Systems and Attribute-Based Encryption
In this paper we present reclaimID: An architecture that allows users to
reclaim their digital identities by securely sharing identity attributes
without the need for a centralised service provider. We propose a design where
user attributes are stored in and shared over a name system under user-owned
namespaces. Attributes are encrypted using attribute-based encryption (ABE),
allowing the user to selectively authorize and revoke access of requesting
parties to subsets of his attributes. We present an implementation based on the
decentralised GNU Name System (GNS) in combination with ciphertext-policy ABE
using type-1 pairings. To show the practicality of our implementation, we
carried out experimental evaluations of selected implementation aspects
including attribute resolution performance. Finally, we show that our design
can be used as a standard OpenID Connect Identity Provider allowing our
implementation to be integrated into standard-compliant services.Comment: 12 page
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
Conversational Sensing
Recent developments in sensing technologies, mobile devices and context-aware
user interfaces have made it possible to represent information fusion and
situational awareness as a conversational process among actors - human and
machine agents - at or near the tactical edges of a network. Motivated by use
cases in the domain of security, policing and emergency response, this paper
presents an approach to information collection, fusion and sense-making based
on the use of natural language (NL) and controlled natural language (CNL) to
support richer forms of human-machine interaction. The approach uses a
conversational protocol to facilitate a flow of collaborative messages from NL
to CNL and back again in support of interactions such as: turning eyewitness
reports from human observers into actionable information (from both trained and
untrained sources); fusing information from humans and physical sensors (with
associated quality metadata); and assisting human analysts to make the best use
of available sensing assets in an area of interest (governed by management and
security policies). CNL is used as a common formal knowledge representation for
both machine and human agents to support reasoning, semantic information fusion
and generation of rationale for inferences, in ways that remain transparent to
human users. Examples are provided of various alternative styles for user
feedback, including NL, CNL and graphical feedback. A pilot experiment with
human subjects shows that a prototype conversational agent is able to gather
usable CNL information from untrained human subjects
Using Blockchain to support Data & Service Monetization
Two required features of a data monetization platform are query and retrieval of the metadata of the resources to be monetized. Centralized platforms rely on the maturity of traditional NoSQL database systems to support these features. These databases, for example, MongoDB allows for very efficient query and retrieval of data it stores. However, centralized platforms come with a bag of security and privacy concerns, making them not the ideal approach for a data monetization platform. On the other hand, most existing decentralized platforms are only partially decentralized. In this research, I developed Cowry, a platform for publishing metadata describing available resources (data or services), discovery of published metadata including fast search and filtering. My main contribution is a fully decentralized architecture that combines blockchain and traditional distributed database to gain additional features such as efficient query and retrieval of metadata stored on the blockchain
A distributed architecture for efficient Web service discovery
open3noAlthough the definition of service-oriented architecture (SOA) included the presence of a service registry from the beginning, the first implementations (e.g., UDDI) did not really succeed mainly because of security and governance issues. This article tackles the problem by introducing DREAM (Distributed Registry by ExAMple): a publish/subscribe-based solution to integrate existing, different registries, along with a match-making approach to ease the publication and retrieval of services. DREAM fosters the interoperability among registry technologies and supports UDDI, ebXML Registry, and other registries. The publish/subscribe paradigm allows service providers to decide the services they want to publish, and requestors to be informed of the services that satisfy their interests. As for the match-making, DREAM supports different ways to evaluate the matching between published and required services.
