    STCP: Receiver-agnostic Communication Enabled by Space-Time Cloud Pointers

    Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Computer Engineering)During the last decade, mobile communication technologies have rapidly evolved and ubiquitous network connectivity is nearly achieved. However, we observe that there are critical situations where none of the existing mobile communication technologies is usable. Such situations are often found when messages need to be delivered to arbitrary persons or devices that are located in a specific space at a specific time. For instance at a disaster scene, current communication methods are incapable of delivering messages of a rescuer to the group of people at a specific area even when their cellular connections are alive because the rescuer cannot specify the receivers of the messages. We name this as receiver-unknown problem and propose a viable solution called SpaceMessaging. SpaceMessaging adopts the idea of Post-it by which we casually deliver our messages to a person who happens to visit a location at a random moment. To enable SpaceMessaging, we realize the concept of posting messages to a space by implementing cloud-pointers at a cloud server to which messages can be posted and from which messages can fetched by arbitrary mobile devices that are located at that space. Our Android-based prototype of SpaceMessaging, which particularly maps a cloud-pointer to a WiFi signal fingerprint captured from mobile devices, demonstrates that it first allows mobile devices to deliver messages to a specific space and to listen to the messages of a specific space in a highly accurate manner (with more than 90% of Recall)

    An Event-based Local Action Paradigm to Improve Energy Efficiency in Queriable Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are deployed in a multitude of applications both in industrial and academic fields. In recent years, due to the emerge of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and Vehicle2X communication scenarios, novel challenges for wireless sensor network platforms - regarding hardware and software - arose. Thus, challenges known from big data processing have reached the WSN scope and consequently approaches and methods have been devised to handle these. One such approach is queriable wireless sensor networks which enable their users the specification of sensing tasks in a declarative way without the need to re-program nodes in case the application requirements change. As many current WSN applications feature active parts with which nodes can directly influence their environment, the term wireless sensor actuator networks (WSAN) has been coined, setting such networks apart from solely passively measuring networks.In this article, we will present a short introduction to big data processing in wireless sensor networks which motivates the usage of queriable networks. We will show that in order to enable a WSAN to carry out actions energy-efficiently and in a timely manner, an event-based action model is favorable. Additionally, we will demonstrate how such an event system can be used to improve sub query performance in WSNs. We conclude with an evaluation regarding the benefit of combining this approach with wake-up receiver technologies based on a qualitative energy efficiency definition for WSN

    Design of a multiple bloom filter for distributed navigation routing

    Unmanned navigation of vehicles and mobile robots can be greatly simplified by providing environmental intelligence with dispersed wireless sensors. The wireless sensors can work as active landmarks for vehicle localization and routing. However, wireless sensors are often resource scarce and require a resource-saving design. In this paper, a multiple Bloom-filter scheme is proposed to compress a global routing table for a wireless sensor. It is used as a lookup table for routing a vehicle to any destination but requires significantly less memory space and search effort. An error-expectation-based design for a multiple Bloom filter is proposed as an improvement to the conventional false-positive-rate-based design. The new design is shown to provide an equal relative error expectation for all branched paths, which ensures a better network load balance and uses less memory space. The scheme is implemented in a project for wheelchair navigation using wireless camera motes. © 2013 IEEE

    A Knowledge-Based Approach to Enhance Provision of Location-Based Services in Wireless Environments

    Location-Based Services (LBS) are attracting a great interest with the fast expansion of mobile computing nowadays. These services use the user location to customize the offered information. However, most of those services are designed for specific scenarios and goals with implicit knowledge about the application context. As a consequence, hundreds of them are available (even with the same purpose). So, it is difficult for users to choose the most suitable service as they are in charge of knowing/finding the services which will be interesting for them, and handle the information that such services need. In this paper, we present an approach to handle LBS for mobile users which relieves them from knowing and managing the knowledge related to such services. This approach consists of a proposal for the modeling of such information as ontologies, which are handled by an agent-based architecture. Also, we propose to maintain updated the knowledge each mobile device contains by leveraging the exchange of information with others. For accessing the local knowledge, we present an SPARQL-like query language which avoids the ambiguities of natural language. Finally, we propose an approach to translate the user information needs into formal requests expressed in this query language, which could be later processed against the knowledge repositories to obtain the results the user needs

    Wireless communication, identification and sensing technologies enabling integrated logistics: a study in the harbor environment

    In the last decade, integrated logistics has become an important challenge in the development of wireless communication, identification and sensing technology, due to the growing complexity of logistics processes and the increasing demand for adapting systems to new requirements. The advancement of wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors, but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and what remains to be addressed in the future
