Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e TelecomunicaçõesTo achieve high bit rates, needed to meet the quality of service requirements of future multimedia applications, multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) has been considered as a candidate air-interface. Interference alignment (IA) is a promising technique that allows high capacity gains in interfering channels. On the other hand, iterative block decision feedback equalization (IB-DFE) based receivers can efficiently exploit the inherent space-frequency diversity of the MIMO MC-CDMA systems. In this thesis we proposed an IA precoding at the transmitter with IB-DFE based processing at the receiver for MC-CDMA systems. The IA precoding is applied at chip level instead of the data symbols level, as in the conventional IA based systems. The receiver is designed in two steps: first the equalizers based on zero forcing (ZF) or minimum mean square error (MMSE) are used to remove the aligned users´ interference. Then and after a whitening noise process, an IB-DFE based equalizer is designed to remove both the residual inter-user aligned and inter-carrier interferences. The results have shown that the obtained performance is very close to the one obtained by the optimal matched filter, with few iterations at the receiver side.
Quantifying Potential Energy Efficiency Gain in Green Cellular Wireless Networks
Conventional cellular wireless networks were designed with the purpose of
providing high throughput for the user and high capacity for the service
provider, without any provisions of energy efficiency. As a result, these
networks have an enormous Carbon footprint. In this paper, we describe the
sources of the inefficiencies in such networks. First we present results of the
studies on how much Carbon footprint such networks generate. We also discuss
how much more mobile traffic is expected to increase so that this Carbon
footprint will even increase tremendously more. We then discuss specific
sources of inefficiency and potential sources of improvement at the physical
layer as well as at higher layers of the communication protocol hierarchy. In
particular, considering that most of the energy inefficiency in cellular
wireless networks is at the base stations, we discuss multi-tier networks and
point to the potential of exploiting mobility patterns in order to use base
station energy judiciously. We then investigate potential methods to reduce
this inefficiency and quantify their individual contributions. By a
consideration of the combination of all potential gains, we conclude that an
improvement in energy consumption in cellular wireless networks by two orders
of magnitude, or even more, is possible.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1210.843
A random access MAC protocol for MPR satellite networks
with the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of multimedia tra c, especially when hand-held devices must operate with very low power.
Cross-Layered optimization architectures, combined with Multipacket Reception (MPR)schemes are a good choice to enhance the overall performance of a wireless system. Hybrid
Network-assisted Diversity Multiple Access (H-NDMA) protocol, exhibits high energy e ciency, with MPR capability, but its use with satellites is limited by the high round trip time. This protocol was adapted to satellites, in Satellite-NDMA, but it required a pre-reservation mechanism that introduces a signi cant delay.
This dissertation proposes a random access protocol that uses H-NDMA, for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks, named Satellite Random-NDMA (SR-NDMA). The protocol addresses the problem inherent to satellite networks (large round trip time and signi cant energy consumption) de ning a hybrid approach with an initial random access plus possible additional scheduled retransmissions. An MPR receiver combines the multiple copies received, gradually reducing the error rate. Analytical performance models are proposed for the throughput, delay, jitter and energy e ciency considering nite queues at the terminals. It is also addressed the energy e ciency optimization, where the system
parameters are calculated to guarantee the QoS requirements.
The proposed system's performance is evaluated for a Single-Carrier with Frequency Domain Equalization (SC-FDE) receiver. Results show that the proposed system is energy e cient and can provide enough QoS to support services such as video telephony
WIMAX LINK PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS FOR WIRELESS AUTOMATION APPLICATIONS
Wireless broadband access technologies are rapidly growing and a corresponding growth in the demand of its applicability transcends faster internet access, high speed file download and different multimedia applications such as voice calls, video streaming, teleconferencing etc, to industrial operations and automation. Industrial and automation systems perform operations that requires the transmission of real time information from one end to another through high-performance wireless broadband communication links. WiMAX, based on IEEE 802.16 standard is one of the wireless broadband access technologies that has overcome location, speed, and access limitations of the traditional Digital Subscriber Line and Wireless Fidelity, and offers high efficient data rates.
This thesis presents detailed analysis of operational WiMAX link performance parameters such as throughput, latency, jitter, and packet loss for suitable applicability in wireless automation applications. The theoretical background of components and functionalities of WiMAX physical and MAC layers as well as the network performance features are presented. The equipment deployed for this field experiment are Alvarion BreeZeMAX 3000 fixed WiMAX equipment operating in the 3.5 GHz licensed band with channel bandwidth of 3.5 MHz. The deployed equipment consisting of MBSE and CPE are installed and commissioned prior to field tests. Several measurements are made in three link quality scenarios (sufficient, good and excellent) in the University of Vaasa campus. Observations and results obtained are discussed and analyzed.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format
Feedforward data-aided phase noise estimation from a DCT basis expansion
This contribution deals with phase noise estimation from pilot symbols. The phase noise process is approximated by an expansion of discrete cosine transform (DCT) basis functions containing only a few terms. We propose a feedforward algorithm that estimates the DCT coefficients without requiring detailed knowledge about the phase noise statistics. We demonstrate that the resulting (linearized) mean-square phase estimation error consists of two contributions: a contribution from the additive noise, that equals the Cramer-Rao lower bound, and a noise independent contribution, that results front the phase noise modeling error. We investigate the effect of the symbol sequence length, the pilot symbol positions, the number of pilot symbols, and the number of estimated DCT coefficients it the estimation accuracy and on the corresponding bit error rate (PER). We propose a pilot symbol configuration allowing to estimate any number of DCT coefficients not exceeding the number of pilot Symbols, providing a considerable Performance improvement as compared to other pilot symbol configurations. For large block sizes, the DCT-based estimation algorithm substantially outperforms algorithms that estimate only the time-average or the linear trend of the carrier phase.
With the arrival of 5G it is expected the proliferation of services in the
different fields such as healthcare, utility applications, industrial automation,
4K streaming, that the former networks can not provide. Additionally,
the total number of wireless communication devices will escalate in such
a manner that the already scarce available frequency bandwidth won’t be
enough to pack the intended objectives. Cisco’s Annual Internet Report from
2018 predicts that by 2023 there will be nearly 30 billion devices capable of
wireless communication. Due to the exponential expiation of both services
and devices, the challenges upon both network data capacity and efficient
radio resourse use will be greater than ever, thus the urgency for solutions
is grand.
Both the capacity for wireless communications and spectral efficiency are
related to cell size and its users proximity to the access point. Thus,
shortening the distance between the transmitter and the receiver improves
both aspects of the network. This concept is what motivates the
implementation of heterogeneous networks, HetNets, that are composed
of many different small-cells, SCs, overlaid across the same coexisting
area of a conventional macro-cell, shortening the distance between the
cell users and its access point transceivers, granting a better coverage and
higher data rates. However, the HetNets potential does not come without
any challenges, as these networks suffer considerably from communication
interference between cells.
Although some interference management algorithms that allow coexistence
between cells have been proposed in recent years, most of them were
evaluated by software simulations and not implemented in real-time
platforms. Therefore, this master thesis aims to give the first step on the
implementation and evaluation of an interference mitigation technique in
hardware. Specifically, it is assumed a downlink scenario composed by a
macro-cell base station, a macro-cell primary user and a small cell user,
with the aim of implementing an algorithm that eliminates the downlink
interference that the base station may cause to the secondary users. The
study was carried out using the System Generator DSP tool, which is a tool
that generates code for hardware from schematics created in it. This tool
also offers a wide range of blocks that help the creation, and fundamentally,
the simulation and study of the system to be implemented, before being
translated into hardware. The results obtained in this work are a faithful
representation of the behavior of the implemented system, which can be
