    Quantum theory of fluctuations in a cold damped accelerometer

    We present a quantum network approach to real high sensitivity measurements. Thermal and quantum fluctuations due to active as well as passive elements are taken into account. The method is applied to the analysis of the capacitive accelerometer using the cold damping technique, developed for fundamental physics in space by ONERA and the ultimate limits of this instrument are discussed. It is confirmed in this quantum analysis that the cold damping technique allows one to control efficiently the test mass motion without degrading the noise level.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, RevTeX; Minor change

    Shadow-free multimers as extreme-performance meta-atoms

    We generalize the concept of parity-time symmetric structures with the goal to create meta-atoms exhibiting extraordinary abilities to overcome the presumed limitations in the scattering of overall lossless particles, such as non-zero forward scattering and the equality of scattering and extinction powers for all lossless particles. Although the forward scattering amplitude and the extinction cross section of our proposed meta-atoms vanish, they scatter incident energy into other directions, with controllable directionality. These meta-atoms possess extreme electromagnetic properties not achievable for passive scatterers. As an example, we study meta-atoms consisting of two or three small dipole scatters. We consider possible microwave realizations in the form of short dipole antennas loaded by lumped elements. The proposed meta-atom empowers extraordinary response of a shadow-free scatterer and theoretically enables most unusual material properties when used as a building block of an artificial medium.Comment: 14 pages, 9 Figure

    Design of a Low-Cost Microstrip Directional Coupler with High Coupling for a Motion Detection Sensor

    A coupled-line coupler based on the asymmetric cascade connection of two coupled line sections is used to achieve a high coupling factor using low-cost material and technology in the X frequency band, and its performance is compared with a standard quarter-wave, coupled-line coupler, showing an increase in the coupling factor of about 3 dB. The proposed coupler can be effectively used in a Doppler motion detection sensor, due to its strong coupling and relatively high isolation. The coupler is designed through a simple, yet rigorous, equivalent circuital model. Then,anoptimizationprocedurewasperformedusingthecommercialsoftwareAnsysHFSSinorder to compensate for losses and second order effects. A prototype of the designed coupler was realized, and the measured data show very good agreement with simulations

    Introduction of a pseudo-6th order ISDN splitter with bandstop topology

    A newly developed ‘integrated services digital network’ (ISDN) splitter with bandstop (BS) topology is presented and compared to an actual ISDN splitter with a traditional lowpass (LP) topology. The LP-to-BS topology change reduced the amount of filter stages: a LP ISDN splitter requires an 8th order elliptic-like filter in order to be compliant to the standard ‘TS 101 952-1-4 V1.1.1’ [1] of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), whereas the BS ISDN splitter only needs a pseudo-6th order elliptic-like filter. The design of the new BS ISDN filter is discussed in the light of the enforced ETSI specifications. Furthermore, both the ISDN splitters are compared in the field of their specific stopband performance and their physical implementation. The area reduction that comes together with the introduction of the new ISDN splitter with BS topology is more than 25%

    This paper presents a detailed description, analysis and example of practical application of a wide frequency band voltage-to-current converter. The converter is characterized by a combination of positive and negative feedback loops. This feature allows compensation for parasitic impedance connected in parallel with the useful load, which in turn keeps an excitation current flowing through the useful load independent of its impedance.     Active distribution power system with multi-terminal DC links

    A fast power restoration operational scheme and relevant stabilizing control is proposed for active distribution power systems with multi-terminal DC network in replacement of the conventional normal open switches. A 9-feeder benchmark distribution power system is established with a 4-terminal medium power DC system injected. The proposed power restoration scheme is based on the coordination among distributed control among relays, load switches, voltage source converters and autonomous operation of multi-terminal DC system. A DC stabilizer is proposed with virtual impedance method to damp out potential oscillation caused by constant power load terminals. The proposed system and controls are validated by frequency domain state space model and time domain case study with Matlab/Simulink
