    Alternative sweetener from curculigo fruits

    This study gives an overview on the advantages of Curculigo Latifolia as an alternative sweetener and a health product. The purpose of this research is to provide another option to the people who suffer from diabetes. In this research, Curculigo Latifolia was chosen, due to its unique properties and widely known species in Malaysia. In order to obtain the sweet protein from the fruit, it must go through a couple of procedures. First we harvested the fruits from the Curculigo trees that grow wildly in the garden. Next, the Curculigo fruits were dried in the oven at 50 0C for 3 days. Finally, the dried fruits were blended in order to get a fine powder. Curculin is a sweet protein with a taste-modifying activity of converting sourness to sweetness. The curculin content from the sample shown are directly proportional to the mass of the Curculigo fine powder. While the FTIR result shows that the sample spectrum at peak 1634 cm–1 contains secondary amines. At peak 3307 cm–1 contains alkynes

    The risk associated with the potential use of carbon fiber composite material in commercial jet aircraft is investigated. A simulation model developed to generate risk profiles for several airports is described. The risk profiles show the probability that the cost due to accidents in any year exceeds a given amount. The computer model simulates aircraft accidents with fire, release of fibers, their downwind transport and infiltration of buildings, equipment failures, and resulting ecomomic impact.     One of the problems associated with some African countries is the increasing trend of road mortality as a result of road fatalities. This has been a major concern. The negative impacts of these on public health cannot be underestimated. An issue of concern is the high record of casualties being recorded on an annual basis as a result of over-speeding, overtaking at dangerous bends, alcohol influence and non-chalant attitude of drivers to driving. The aim of this research is to explore and adapt the knowledge of finite state algorithm, modeling and simulation to design and implement a novel prototype of an advanced traffic light system towards promoting public health among African countries. Here, we specify and built a model of an advanced wireless traffic control system, which will help complement existing traffic control systems among African countries. This prototype is named Advanced Wireless Traffic Control System (WPDTCS). We developed this model using an event-driven programming approach. The technical details of the model were based on knowledge adapted from the Finite State Automation Transition algorithm. It is expected that the AWTCS will promote the evolution of teaching in modeling, simulation, public safety by offering trainees an advanced pedagogical product.     Consistency Index-Based Sensor Fault Detection System for Nuclear Power Plant Emergency Situations Using an LSTM Network

    A nuclear power plant (NPP) consists of an enormous number of components with complex interconnections. Various techniques to detect sensor errors have been developed to monitor the state of the sensors during normal NPP operation, but not for emergency situations. In an emergency situation with a reactor trip, all the plant parameters undergo drastic changes following the sudden decrease in core reactivity. In this paper, a machine learning model adopting a consistency index is suggested for sensor error detection during NPP emergency situations. The proposed consistency index refers to the soundness of the sensors based on their measurement accuracy. The application of consistency index labeling makes it possible to detect sensor error immediately and specify the particular sensor where the error occurred. From a compact nuclear simulator, selected plant parameters were extracted during typical emergency situations, and artificial sensor errors were injected into the raw data.     Data-based fault detection in chemical processes: Managing records with operator intervention and uncertain labels

    Developing data-driven fault detection systems for chemical plants requires managing uncertain data labels and dynamic attributes due to operator-process interactions. Mislabeled data is a known problem in computer science that has received scarce attention from the process systems community. This work introduces and examines the effects of operator actions in records and labels, and the consequences in the development of detection models. Using a state space model, this work proposes an iterative relabeling scheme for retraining classifiers that continuously refines dynamic attributes and labels. Three case studies are presented: a reactor as a motivating example, flooding in a simulated de-Butanizer column, as a complex case, and foaming in an absorber as an industrial challenge. For the first case, detection accuracy is shown to increase by 14% while operating costs are reduced by 20%. Moreover, regarding the de-Butanizer column, the performance of the proposed strategy is shown to be 10% higher than the filtering strategy.     Construction safety and digital design: a review

    As digital technologies become widely used in designing buildings and infrastructure, questions arise about their impacts on construction safety. This review explores relationships between construction safety and digital design practices with the aim of fostering and directing further research. It surveys state-of-the-art research on databases, virtual reality, geographic information systems, 4D CAD, building information modeling and sensing technologies, finding various digital tools for addressing safety issues in the construction phase, but few tools to support design for construction safety. It also considers a literature on safety critical, digital and design practices that raises a general concern about ‘mindlessness’ in the use of technologies, and has implications for the emerging research agenda around construction safety and digital design. Bringing these strands of literature together suggests new kinds of interventions, such as the development of tools and processes for using digital models to promote mindfulness through multi-party collaboration on safet

    With an annual budget of about 400million,theOccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministration(OSHA)isabout5percentthesizeoftheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency,anotherfederalagencycreatedbyPresidentRichardM.Nixonin1970,the"YearoftheEnvironment."NearlyallworkersintheUnitedStatescomeunderOSHAsjuridction,withsomenotableexceptions,includingminers,transportationworkers,manypublicemployees,andpeoplewhoareselfemployed.OSHAiscurrentlyresponsibleforptoectingover100millionworkersat6millionworksiteswiththehelpofonlyabout2,000workplacehealthandsafetyinspectors.Nevertheless,suppoersofOSHAarguethatithassignificantlyimprovedworkersafetyoverthelast30yearsandthatabeefedupenforcementeffortwouldproduceevengreaterimprovements.WeexaminetheavailableevidenceandfindlittlesupporttothenotionthatOSHAhaseffectivelyreducedaccidentsanddiseasesintheworkplaceorthatamorevigorousenforcementcampaignwouldbelikelytodoso.Otherpolicyinstrumentstortlaws,stateWorkersCompensationinsuranceprograms,andresearchandpubliceducationonthecausesandconsequencesofworkhazardsnowkeepworkplacedeathsandinjurieslowandcanreducethemevenmore.Thewagepremiums,estimatedat400 million, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is about 5 percent the size of the Environmental Protection Agency, another federal agency created by President Richard M. Nixon in 1970, the "Year of the Environment." Nearly all workers in the United States come under OSHA's juridction, with some notable exceptions, including miners, transportation workers, many public employees, and people who are self-employed. OSHA is currently responsible for ptoecting over 100 million workers at 6 million work sites with the help of only about 2,000 workplace health and safety inspectors. Nevertheless, suppoers of OSHA argue that it has significantly improved worker safety over the last 30 years and that a beefed-up enforcement effort would produce even greater improvements. We examine the available evidence and find little support to the notion that OSHA has effectively reduced accidents and diseases in the workplace or that a more vigorous enforcement campaign would be likely to do so. Other policy instruments--tort laws, state Workers' Compensation insurance programs, and research and public education on the causes and consequences of work hazards--now keep workplace deaths and injuries low and can reduce them even more. The wage premiums, estimated at 210 billion per year, that workers receive for accepting job-related health hazards give employers a stronger economic incentive to eliminate workplace health and safety hazards than the $132 million per year in fines imposed by OSHA and its state counterparts for violations of workplace safety standards. Because of the heterogeneity of workers and firms, we argue that public policy should expand the economic incentives for workplace safety while allowing firms and workers freedom to discover on their own the best ways to improve workplace safety.
