Network slicing to enable scalability and flexibility in 5G mobile networks
We argue for network slicing as an efficient solution that addresses the diverse requirements of 5G mobile networks, thus provid-ing the necessary flexibility and scalability associated with future network implementations. We elaborate on the challenges that emerge when we design 5G networks based on network slicing. We focus on the architectural aspects associated with the coexistence of dedicated as well as shared slices in the network. In particular, we analyze the realization options of a flexible radio access network with focus on network slicing and their impact on the design of 5G mobile networks. In addition to the technical study, this paper provides an investigation of the revenue potential of network slicing, where the applications that originate from such concept and the profit capabilities from the network operator's perspective are put forward. This work has been performed in the framework of the H2020-ICT-2014-2 project 5G NORMA
Design and Experimental Validation of a Software-Defined Radio Access Network Testbed with Slicing Support
Network slicing is a fundamental feature of 5G systems to partition a single
network into a number of segregated logical networks, each optimized for a
particular type of service, or dedicated to a particular customer or
application. The realization of network slicing is particularly challenging in
the Radio Access Network (RAN) part, where multiple slices can be multiplexed
over the same radio channel and Radio Resource Management (RRM) functions shall
be used to split the cell radio resources and achieve the expected behaviour
per slice. In this context, this paper describes the key design and
implementation aspects of a Software-Defined RAN (SD-RAN) experimental testbed
with slicing support. The testbed has been designed consistently with the
slicing capabilities and related management framework established by 3GPP in
Release 15. The testbed is used to demonstrate the provisioning of RAN slices
(e.g. preparation, commissioning and activation phases) and the operation of
the implemented RRM functionality for slice-aware admission control and
scheduling
Resource slicing in virtual wireless networks: a survey
New architectural and design approaches for radio access networks have appeared with the introduction of network virtualization in the wireless domain. One of these approaches splits the wireless network infrastructure into isolated virtual slices under their own management, requirements, and characteristics. Despite the advances in wireless virtualization, there are still many open issues regarding the resource allocation and isolation of wireless slices. Because of the dynamics and
shared nature of the wireless medium, guaranteeing that the traffic on one slice will not affect the traffic on the others has proven to be difficult. In this paper, we focus on the detailed definition of the problem, discussing its challenges. We also provide a review of existing works that deal with the problem, analyzing how new trends such as software defined networking and network function virtualization can assist in the slicing. We will finally describe some research challenges on this topic.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
