Enabling Social Applications via Decentralized Social Data Management
An unprecedented information wealth produced by online social networks,
further augmented by location/collocation data, is currently fragmented across
different proprietary services. Combined, it can accurately represent the
social world and enable novel socially-aware applications. We present
Prometheus, a socially-aware peer-to-peer service that collects social
information from multiple sources into a multigraph managed in a decentralized
fashion on user-contributed nodes, and exposes it through an interface
implementing non-trivial social inferences while complying with user-defined
access policies. Simulations and experiments on PlanetLab with emulated
application workloads show the system exhibits good end-to-end response time,
low communication overhead and resilience to malicious attacks.Comment: 27 pages, single ACM column, 9 figures, accepted in Special Issue of

Let Your CyberAlter Ego Share Information and Manage Spam
Almost all of us have multiple cyberspace identities, and these {\em
cyber}alter egos are networked together to form a vast cyberspace social
network. This network is distinct from the world-wide-web (WWW), which is being
queried and mined to the tune of billions of dollars everyday, and until
recently, has gone largely unexplored. Empirically, the cyberspace social
networks have been found to possess many of the same complex features that
characterize its real counterparts, including scale-free degree distributions,
low diameter, and extensive connectivity. We show that these topological
features make the latent networks particularly suitable for explorations and
management via local-only messaging protocols. {\em Cyber}alter egos can
communicate via their direct links (i.e., using only their own address books)
and set up a highly decentralized and scalable message passing network that can
allow large-scale sharing of information and data. As one particular example of
such collaborative systems, we provide a design of a spam filtering system, and
our large-scale simulations show that the system achieves a spam detection rate
close to 100%, while the false positive rate is kept around zero. This system
has several advantages over other recent proposals (i) It uses an already
existing network, created by the same social dynamics that govern our daily
lives, and no dedicated peer-to-peer (P2P) systems or centralized server-based
systems need be constructed; (ii) It utilizes a percolation search algorithm
that makes the query-generated traffic scalable; (iii) The network has a built
in trust system (just as in social networks) that can be used to thwart
malicious attacks; iv) It can be implemented right now as a plugin to popular
email programs, such as MS Outlook, Eudora, and Sendmail.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
Security for the Industrial IoT: The Case for Information-Centric Networking
Industrial production plants traditionally include sensors for monitoring or
documenting processes, and actuators for enabling corrective actions in cases
of misconfigurations, failures, or dangerous events. With the advent of the
IoT, embedded controllers link these `things' to local networks that often are
of low power wireless kind, and are interconnected via gateways to some cloud
from the global Internet. Inter-networked sensors and actuators in the
industrial IoT form a critical subsystem while frequently operating under harsh
conditions. It is currently under debate how to approach inter-networking of
critical industrial components in a safe and secure manner.
In this paper, we analyze the potentials of ICN for providing a secure and
robust networking solution for constrained controllers in industrial safety
systems. We showcase hazardous gas sensing in widespread industrial
environments, such as refineries, and compare with IP-based approaches such as
CoAP and MQTT. Our findings indicate that the content-centric security model,
as well as enhanced DoS resistance are important arguments for deploying
Information Centric Networking in a safety-critical industrial IoT. Evaluation
of the crypto efforts on the RIOT operating system for content security reveal
its feasibility for common deployment scenarios.Comment: To be published at IEEE WF-IoT 201
Capacity and Security of Heterogeneous Distributed Storage Systems
We study the capacity of heterogeneous distributed storage systems under
repair dynamics. Examples of these systems include peer-to-peer storage clouds,
wireless, and Internet caching systems. Nodes in a heterogeneous system can
have different storage capacities and different repair bandwidths. We give
lower and upper bounds on the system capacity. These bounds depend on either
the average resources per node, or on a detailed knowledge of the node
characteristics. Moreover, we study the case in which nodes may be compromised
by an eavesdropper, and give bounds on the system secrecy capacity. One
implication of our results is that symmetric repair maximizes the capacity of a
homogeneous system, which justifies the model widely used in the literature.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
