Statistical Analysis of Bus Networks in India
Through the past decade the field of network science has established itself
as a common ground for the cross-fertilization of exciting inter-disciplinary
studies which has motivated researchers to model almost every physical system
as an interacting network consisting of nodes and links. Although public
transport networks such as airline and railway networks have been extensively
studied, the status of bus networks still remains in obscurity. In developing
countries like India, where bus networks play an important role in day-to-day
commutation, it is of significant interest to analyze its topological structure
and answer some of the basic questions on its evolution, growth, robustness and
resiliency. In this paper, we model the bus networks of major Indian cities as
graphs in \textit{L}-space, and evaluate their various statistical properties
using concepts from network science. Our analysis reveals a wide spectrum of
network topology with the common underlying feature of small-world property. We
observe that the networks although, robust and resilient to random attacks are
particularly degree-sensitive. Unlike real-world networks, like Internet, WWW
and airline, which are virtual, bus networks are physically constrained. The
presence of various geographical and economic constraints allow these networks
to evolve over time. Our findings therefore, throw light on the evolution of
such geographically and socio-economically constrained networks which will help
us in designing more efficient networks in the future.Comment: Submitted to PLOS ON
The principles of public transport network planning: a review of the emerging literature with select examples
This paper highlights for urban planners the key strategies and tactics that can be deployed to improve suburban public transport networks.
Introduction
The governance and management of public transport systems is an essential component of metropolitan planning and urban management. Most metropolitan strategies in Australia and in other jurisdictions presuppose the provision of public transport. Yet there is often a disconnection between transport plans and land-use schemes. Similarly, metropolitan land-use plans that do integrate with transport plans tend to focus on infrastructure rather than service quality and connectivity. A failure to adequately consider the quality of public transport networks in land-use planning analysis has the potential to produce poor planning outcomes in two key ways. First new land-uses may be inadequately served with public transport services, leading to dependence on alternative travel modes, such as cars. Second, the failure to recognise the significance of well-planned local public transport networks may result in the preclusion of some land-use options. This preclusion may relate to the location of land-uses or their design, such as over-provision of carparking. The continuing debate over whether to address suburban cardependence via land-use change or via transport planning is a case in point. And while the arguments in favour of and against land-use change as a means to overcome car dependence are well known in the planning literature. There is a growing if not yet widely appreciated literature that advocates improvements to public transport network planning and coordination as a means of reducing car dependence. The recognition of improved public transport network planning as a means of reducing car dependence is immensely significant because it offers planners an additional or alternative tool for managing urban transport patterns beyond land-use variation or investment in heavy infrastructure.
Urban planning practitioners are not yet well served and informed by the broader public transport planning literature on the advantages of public transport network planning. While there is an extensive literature focusing on the economics and engineering of urban public transport systems the planning literature on the practices that contribute to success in public transport network design and operations is relatively poorly documented. There is also very little literature dedicated to public transport network design within Australian cities which are distinguished by highly centralised radial heavy rail networks with bus or tram networks that are well developed in inner urban zones but less so in the outer suburbs.
The remainder of this paper has four objectives for transport planning theory and practice. First the paper reviews the literature on public transport network planning principles; next the paper attempts to formulate these principles in practical terms such that they can be applied to line and network design; third the paper considers further dimensions of network planning, including institutional arrangements and transition points in network design. The paper is intended for three audiences. The first is planning scholars who are involved in debates about public transport. The second is strategic policy officials in planning agencies who are involved in the planning and design of public transport networks. The third audience comprises those involved in development processes and who seek insights into the technical components of public transport network planning.
Some caveats are appropriate however. The paper is not seeking to justify public transport network planning. The authors consider that the case for dedicated planning is implicit in the assumption that cities should provide good quality public transport to their residents. The wider case in favour of network planning has been successfully advanced elsewhere. Conversely, the paper is not intended as a directly applicable manual of detailed transport planning practice. While it does offer some insights into the practical public transport network planning task such guidance is better provided by Nielsen et al and Vuchic. Instead the paper highlights for urban planners the key strategies and tactics for that can be deployed to improve suburban public transport networks. Understanding these principles should thus assist urban planners – and urban scholars – to better shape and evaluate urban development processes and patterns
Relieving the Wireless Infrastructure: When Opportunistic Networks Meet Guaranteed Delays
Major wireless operators are nowadays facing network capacity issues in
striving to meet the growing demands of mobile users. At the same time,
3G-enabled devices increasingly benefit from ad hoc radio connectivity (e.g.,
Wi-Fi). In this context of hybrid connectivity, we propose Push-and-track, a
content dissemination framework that harnesses ad hoc communication
opportunities to minimize the load on the wireless infrastructure while
guaranteeing tight delivery delays. It achieves this through a control loop
that collects user-sent acknowledgements to determine if new copies need to be
reinjected into the network through the 3G interface. Push-and-Track includes
multiple strategies to determine how many copies of the content should be
injected, when, and to whom. The short delay-tolerance of common content, such
as news or road traffic updates, make them suitable for such a system. Based on
a realistic large-scale vehicular dataset from the city of Bologna composed of
more than 10,000 vehicles, we demonstrate that Push-and-Track consistently
meets its delivery objectives while reducing the use of the 3G network by over

Redesigning Large-Scale Multimodal Transit Networks with Shared Autonomous Mobility Services
Public transit systems have faced challenges and opportunities from emerging
Shared Autonomous Mobility Services (SAMS). This study addresses a city-scale
multimodal transit network design problem, with shared autonomous vehicles as
both transit feeders and a direct interzonal mode. The framework captures
spatial demand and modal characteristics, considers intermodal transfers and
express services, determines transit infrastructure investment and path flows,
and designs transit routes. A system-optimal multimodal transit network is
designed with minimum total door-to-door generalized costs of users and
operators, while satisfying existing transit origin-destination demand within a
pre-set infrastructure budget. Firstly, the geography, demand, and modes in
each clustered zone are characterized with continuous approximation. Afterward,
the decisions of network link investment and multimodal path flows in zonal
connection optimization are formulated as a minimum-cost multi-commodity
network flow (MCNF) problem and solved efficiently with a mixed-integer linear
programming (MILP) solver. Subsequently, the route generation problem is solved
by expanding the MCNF formulation to minimize intramodal transfers. To
demonstrate the framework efficiency, this study uses transit demand from the
Chicago metropolitan area to redesign a multimodal transit network. The
computational results present savings in travelers' journey time and operators'
costs, demonstrating the potential benefits of collaboration between multimodal

A Modular, Adaptive, and Autonomous Transit System (MAATS): A In-motion Transfer Strategy and Performance Evaluation in Urban Grid Transit Networks
Dynamic traffic demand has been a longstanding challenge for the conventional transit system design and operation. The recent development of autonomous vehicles (AVs) makes it increasingly realistic to develop the next generation of transportation systems with the potential to improve operational performance and flexibility. In this study, we propose an innovative transit system with autonomous modular buses (AMBs) that is adaptive to dynamic traffic demands and not restricted to fixed routes and timetables. A unique transfer operation, termed as “in-motion transfer”, is introduced in this paper to transfer passengers between coupled modular buses in motion. A two-stage model is developed to facilitate in-motion transfer operations in optimally designing passenger transfer plans and AMB trajectories at intersections. In the proposed AMB system, all passengers can travel in the shortest path smoothly without having to actually alight and transfer between different bus lines. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed transit system results in shorter travel time and a significantly reduced average number of transfers. Promoting Intermodal Connectivity at California’s High Speed Rail Stations
High-speed rail (HSR) has emerged as one of the most revolutionary and transformative transportation technologies, having a profound impact on urban-regional accessibility and inter-city travel across Europe, Japan, and more recently China and other Asian countries. One of HSR’s biggest advantages over air travel is that it offers passengers a one-seat ride into the center of major cities, eliminating time-consuming airport transfers and wait times, and providing ample opportunities for intermodal transfers at these locales. Thus, HSR passengers are typically able to arrive at stations that are only a short walk away from central business districts and major tourist attractions, without experiencing any of the stress that car drivers often experience in negotiating such highly congested environments. Such an approach requires a high level of coordination and planning of the infrastructural and spatial aspects of the HSR service, and a high degree of intermodal connectivity. But what key elements can help the US high-speed rail system blend successfully with other existing rail and transit services? That question is critically important now that high-speed rail is under construction in California. The study seeks to understand the requirements for high levels of connectivity and spatial and operational integration of HSR stations and offer recommendations for seamless, and convenient integrated service in California intercity rail/HSR stations. The study draws data from a review of the literature on the connectivity, intermodality, and spatial and operational integration of transit systems; a survey of 26 high-speed rail experts from six different European countries; and an in-depth look of the German and Spanish HSR systems and some of their stations, which are deemed as exemplary models of station connectivity. The study offers recommendations on how to enhance both the spatial and the operational connectivity of high-speed rail systems giving emphasis on four spatial zones: the station, the station neighborhood, the municipality at large, and the region
Workload Equity in Vehicle Routing Problems: A Survey and Analysis
Over the past two decades, equity aspects have been considered in a growing
number of models and methods for vehicle routing problems (VRPs). Equity
concerns most often relate to fairly allocating workloads and to balancing the
utilization of resources, and many practical applications have been reported in
the literature. However, there has been only limited discussion about how
workload equity should be modeled in VRPs, and various measures for optimizing
such objectives have been proposed and implemented without a critical
evaluation of their respective merits and consequences.
This article addresses this gap with an analysis of classical and alternative
equity functions for biobjective VRP models. In our survey, we review and
categorize the existing literature on equitable VRPs. In the analysis, we
identify a set of axiomatic properties that an ideal equity measure should
satisfy, collect six common measures, and point out important connections
between their properties and those of the resulting Pareto-optimal solutions.
To gauge the extent of these implications, we also conduct a numerical study on
small biobjective VRP instances solvable to optimality. Our study reveals two
undesirable consequences when optimizing equity with nonmonotonic functions:
Pareto-optimal solutions can consist of non-TSP-optimal tours, and even if all
tours are TSP optimal, Pareto-optimal solutions can be workload inconsistent,
i.e. composed of tours whose workloads are all equal to or longer than those of
other Pareto-optimal solutions. We show that the extent of these phenomena
should not be underestimated. The results of our biobjective analysis are valid
also for weighted sum, constraint-based, or single-objective models. Based on
this analysis, we conclude that monotonic equity functions are more appropriate
for certain types of VRP models, and suggest promising avenues for further

Applying an entropic analysis to locate rapid transit lines in sprawled cities
Urban sprawl is a phenomenon that leads to an extensive use of motorized transport modes with negative
environmental impacts such as congestion, time wasted in traffic jams, air and noise pollution and
additional costs incurred by using non-renewable energy. Increasing the existing infrastructures is a
decision, which often generates the installation of new urban settlements, whose degree of isolation
is mitigated with a new increase in the demand for transport. This vicious circle can be broken by
reducing the need of transport imposed by the urban model, which is only possible by bringing citizens
closer to those services they demand. In the model of sprawled city, housing predominates as land use
in the residential areas, where other complementary uses (such as commercial, cultural, institutional
and industrial ones) are excluded in the urban development. When the urban districts don´t present
enough complexity, an increase in traffic density between different zones into the city arises. Such
forced mobility could be reduced if the functional diversity of the districts were greater, or if there was
an urban rapid transit system connecting the areas that generate the greatest imbalances. To measure
the complexity of the urban districts system, the Information Theory developed in the 1960s proposes
the use of urban entropy. The paper addresses the problem of locating a rapid transit line (metro, tram,
BRT) with the objective of maximize the functional diversity of the districts traversed by the alignment.

Automated Transit Networks (ATN): A Review of the State of the Industry and Prospects for the Future, MTI Report 12-31
The concept of Automated Transit Networks (ATN) - in which fully automated vehicles on exclusive, grade-separated guideways provide on-demand, primarily non-stop, origin-to-destination service over an area network – has been around since the 1950s. However, only a few systems are in current operation around the world. ATN does not appear “on the radar” of urban planners, transit professionals, or policy makers when it comes to designing solutions for current transit problems in urban areas. This study explains ATN technology, setting it in the larger context of Automated Guideway Transit (AGT); looks at the current status of ATN suppliers, the status of the ATN industry, and the prospects of a U.S.-based ATN industry; summarizes and organizes proceedings from the seven Podcar City conferences that have been held since 2006; documents the U.S./Sweden Memorandum of Understanding on Sustainable Transport; discusses how ATN could expand the coverage of existing transit systems; explains the opportunities and challenges in planning and funding ATN systems and approaches for procuring ATN systems; and concludes with a summary of the existing challenges and opportunities for ATN technology. The study is intended to be an informative tool for planners, urban designers, and those involved in public policy, especially for urban transit, to provide a reference for history and background on ATN, and to use for policy development and research

Maneuvering Mobility: Measuring Multimodality in New York City’s Selected Transit Hubs
The main purpose of this research is to answer the question of how New York City encourages multimodality through institutional and fare integration and how different transportation hubs within the city service multimodality through physical design. This research is primarily a qualitative study that heavily relies on direct field observations as well as reviews of the relevant literature. The analysis of this thesis is broken down into three main categories of multimodality integration: institutional, fare, and physical. The analysis of physical integration is focused on three transportation hubs: namely the Atlantic Terminal, the Wall Street Ferry Station, and the Harlem 125th Street Station. This thesis finds that New York City is a unique context in the organizations that are active in daily operations of public transportation. This institutional division of operations would consequently lead to low integration. While the presence of different transportation modes are continually present in proximity to each other, the ease of transfer most of the time is coincidental based on density and frequency of service and has little to do with intentional integration
